IE and “Limited or no connectivity…” problems

At home I have a PC used by the whole family that has a number of problems. I also use a laptop for my work – no problems on this. Both used to run on a wireless connection to broadband. Now only the laptop does. Just before Christmas the following problems arose on the PC:

1. Internet very slow.
2. IE frequently crashing – either freezing or, more commonly, disappearing altogether. This is more common if I have more than one window open. It will also switch between windows.
3. IE occasionally ‘hijacked’ (or that’s what it seems like to me) by the website: www.spyware-adware-removal-tools.com
4. Whenever I do a Google search the first result is always www.purplechat.com

The PC had these problems for a week or so and then, at the end of a Microsoft update (the PC runs on Windows XP SP2), I got the message “Limited or no connectivity…”. I could then get no connection at all. I followed all the advice I could find on the web to resolve this problem, but have only managed to get around it by replacing the wireless connection with a wired connection. The laptop still operates a wireless connection.

I would be very grateful for any help you could offer. I use computers a lot but the technical side, like the following log, is all Greek to me!

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running.
Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)

Please go to at least two of these sites and run an online Virus Scan.
Be sure to have the AutoFix box(s) checked if the site has that option.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx
http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/d...d=ie&venid=sym

Download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to it’s own folder (C:\BFU)

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download 2Search Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (C:\BFU)

Now close all visible IE windows, because the script will kill one iexplorer process. It is meant to target an invisible one, but having IE windows open could cause it to stop the wrong one.

Do not be startled when your taskbar and desktop disappear. The script does this to be able to delete one very stubborn file.

Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute copy and paste C:\bfu2search.bfu
Press execute and let it do it’s job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Post back to this topic using the add reply button with a fresh HijackThis log and the log below.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to buy the program for removal as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Please post that log in your next reply

The logs you asked for

Many thanks for helping me out.

Before posting my first hijackthis log I followed the directions by one of your colleagues about running up-to-date versions of Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, CWShredder and online virus scans. I managed to do www.3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx as well as my own, Norman Virus Control. (I did try the others but IE kept crashing).

I have now run the BFU. This completed very quickly and did not have any effect on the screen (ie taskbar and desktop did not disappear as you warned they might).

Logs for Activescan and Hijackthis follow:

My System

Run the Brute Force Uninstaller step again..Make sure you are using the 2search.bfu file that MicroBell asked you to get.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=61 ). Make sure to close any open browsers.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if found:

2Search

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you check the last one:

O2 - BHO: GoogleCatch.clsIESpy - {4508E20C-ACAD-11D2-9FC0-00550076E06F} - C:\Program Files\2search\2search.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2Search] C:\Program Files\2search\main.exe

Check and fix ALL the O18 entries below related to Logitech, except for the first line (see below). Leave that entry unchecked:

O18 - Protocol: bw+0 - {5958427B-D5DC-479A-B52B-CFB2EACBFEAB} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll

Go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 /u occache.dll and hit OK.

Delete these if found:

C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\dm.inf
C:\PROGRAM FILES\2search
C:\Documents and Settings\Peter_2\Cookies\peter_2@microsofteup.112. 2o7[1].txt

C:\WINDOWS\inf\polall1r.inf

Go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 occache.dll and hit OK.

Restart and run a new Panda scan. Post that log here along with a new HijackThis log.

Queston about BFU search2 execution

Hello Greyknight17 - many thanks for helping out.

I mentioned the lack of response to BFU because I wondered if something was wrong. I have tried it again and still it completes immediately without the taskbar and desktop disappearing. The file 2search.bfu is saved into c:\BFU as directed, and I have tried it as:
C:\bfu2search.bfu (as indicated in MicroBell's message)
and as
C:\bfu\2search.bfu

I have tried it again and asked for a report - each time it gives the following log:

BFU v1.00.9
Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600 SP2)
Script started at 20:55:08, on 07/01/2006

Script completed.

Am I doing something wrong? Sorry if I'm being a bit thick.

Send a message via ICQ to MicroBell Send a message via MSN to MicroBell
Lets try this.....

Download and unzip BFUzip from http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip
Run the program and click the Web button as shown here:

Use this URL to copy into the address bar of the Download script window:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/2search.bfu

Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.

If you have any questions about the use of BFU please read here:
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/BFUinstructions.html

If that still doesn't work...proceed with "Greyknight's" instructions and I'll take it out manually.

Latest Panda scan and HijackThis logs

I have completed all steps as directed, although not sure they all worked as intended. Again, the BFU did not make the taskbar and desktop disappear. It did more than before, but the report just had a list of "Failed...".

The regsvr32 /u occache.dll procedure did not produce a list of anything so I could not delete any of the files mentioned. Panda scan report and HijackThis logs as follows:

That's fine. The script did what it was supposed to do.

Download KillBox http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...re/KillBox.zip

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Run Ewido:
  • Click [Scanner]
  • Click [Complete System Scan] to begin scanning.
  • Click [OK] when prompted to clean files
  • With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click [OK].
  • Once finished, click the [Save report] button
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Run KILL box. Paste the following locations into KILL BOX one at a time. Checkmark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot.

C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\dm.inf
C:\WINDOWS\INF\polall1r.inf

Once you reboot..post another Panda log and the Ewido log.

Ewido and Panda logs

Thanks for the reassurance. I really appreciate your help on this - the improvement on my PC has been remarkable. Internet speed is currently much better (like normal) and the www.purplechat.com results on Google search have gone. I have not had any IE crashes or window switches in the last couple of days.

Ewido and Panda logs follow:

Latest developments

Last night my wife checked her emails on this machine and her desktop started behaving strangely - clicking on any desktop icon highlighted others as well. This only stopped when she logged off and logged back on. We then noticed that all of the desktop icons were duplicated. The only unusual email that she had just opened was one from "Energis Abuse Dept 2099396" <abuse@energis.com> which gave detailed "Notification of Virus Infection". Stating that Energis is a "backbone ISP" who "host a number of virtual ISPs including Wanadoo" (which is our broadband provider) the email said, "We have been alerted to the fact that your PC is infected with a virus due to a report we received from someone who received an email with a suspected virus attachment. The virus appeared to come from another address but the headers of the email (which show the message path) track back to your account." etc.

This appears to be a genuine email. However, the behaviour of the desktop concerns me. Any advice would be welcome.

That regsvr32 won't give you a list of anything. It should just say it's registered/unregistered correctly or not...just need you to do that in case a file is stubborn and not allowing you to delete it from the Downloaded Program Files folder.

Do this again:

Go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 /u occache.dll and hit OK.

Delete these if found:

C:\WINDOWS\INF\dm.inf
C:\!KillBox\polall1r.inf

Go to Start->Run and type in regsvr32 occache.dll and hit OK.

Restart...Run a virus scan using Kaspersky Online Scanner. Just click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner button and read what's posted there - hit Accept once you're done. Download the ActiveX file when prompted. Scanning will begin shortly. When it's done post the log here.

Typed in regsvr32 /u occache.dll. Box came up with DllUnregisterServer in occache.dll succeeded. I hit OK.

Did not find:
C:\WINDOWS\INF\dm.inf
C:\!KillBox\polall1r.inf

Typed in regsvr32 occache.dll. Box came up with DllRegisterServer in occache.dll succeeded. I hit OK.

So current problem is still with the desktop icons highlighting right?

Let's see if mwav can show us anything:

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.

The desktop icons problem only happened the once, at the time that we received the email mentioned. I am not aware of any recurrence since then. The computer seems to be working well now.

Hello PS216,

To clean out those orphaned registry entries showing in Mwav, please download Ccleaner www.ccleaner.com

Run Ccleaner.
Click on the 'Issues' tab to clean registry. Be sure that box is checked to 'prompt to backup registry' in the Options>Advanced section.

Your logs are clean. If there aren't any more problems, please continue with these final instructions:

Reset hidden/system files and folders
Windows XP
===============
Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
* Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
* Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Enable Windows Auto Update
*Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
*Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
*Under Settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will prevent any reinfection from previous restore points.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER

Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

More information and free downloads are available at the following links:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you will not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
