Troj/Abox-d infection
Hi,
Firstly I would like to thank whoever is taking the time to solve my problem. I'll start at the beginning. I got warning messages of troj/abox-d detection in my temporary internet files about 1 week ago. I immediately ran my virus software ( Sophos) and deleted what files it found. However the messages would recur. I know a little about trojans having had one before. I following my virus programmes advice, downloaded the virus ide file and removed the virus in safe mode using their instruction and file called sav32cli. Where I had difficulty was the vaqueness of the instructions: they also called for the editing of my registry in command prompt. I'm not experienced enough know how to go about that. Somewhat unwisely I ran hijack this independently and compared it to a healthy previous log, deleting the extra entry - something called cravonlineweb. My computer began to have serious rebooting problems, blue screens etc. I'm not sure exactly what WAS happening but I kept trying to boot it up and back up files only to have it start behaving itself. Everything seemed fine until today when the original troj/abox-d warning popped up again, having been gone for several days? At this point I consulted this website, I have followed the sticky's instructions to the letter, running several sweeps with 2 online scans, plus a scan with my own sophos package, I run adaware and spybot, both updated as instructed and checked my add/remove programme list for malware listed. Here is my Hijack log Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 15:45:58, on 06/01/2006 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\Program Files\Sophos\Remote Update\cachemgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Sophos SWEEP for NT\SWNETSUP.EXE C:\Program Files\Sophos SWEEP for NT\SWEEPSRV.SYS C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe C:\Program Files\Lexmark X5100 Series\lxbabmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Browser MOUSE\mouse32a.exe C:\Program Files\Lexmark X5100 Series\lxbabmon.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Shared Files\InstantCDDVD\PCLETray.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyexpr.exe C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\InstantCDDVD\InstantWrite\iwctrl.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Distillr\acrotray.exe C:\Program Files\Sophos SWEEP for NT\ICMON.EXE C:\Program Files\Sophos\Remote Update\imonitor.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopIndex.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopDisplay.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopCrawl.exe C:\Program Files\Realtek\Rtl8180\RtlWake.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktopOE.exe C:\Program Files\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.ucd.ie/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http://proxy.ucd.ie/proxy.pac O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar.dll O2 - BHO: AcroIEToolbarHelper Class - {AE7CD045-E861-484f-8273-0445EE161910} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dll O3 - Toolbar: Adobe PDF - {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PinnacleDriverCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSDrvCheck.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Lexmark X5100 Series] "C:\Program Files\Lexmark X5100 Series\lxbabmgr.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FLMOFFICE4DMOUSE] C:\Program Files\Browser MOUSE\mouse32a.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIModeChange] Ati2mdxx.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [InstantTray] C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Shared Files\InstantCDDVD\PCLETray.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MoneyAgent] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\mnyexpr.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IW_Drop_Icon] C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\InstantCDDVD\InstantWrite\iwctrl.exe /DropDisc O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Google Desktop Search] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Desktop Search\GoogleDesktop.exe" /startup O4 - Global Startup: Acrobat Assistant.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Distillr\acrotray.exe O4 - Global Startup: InterCheck Monitor.LNK = C:\Program Files\Sophos SWEEP for NT\ICMON.EXE O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE O4 - Global Startup: Remote Update Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\Sophos\Remote Update\imonitor.exe O4 - Global Startup: RtlWake.lnk = ? Your log appears clean but let's do an online scan & see if it picks up anything.
Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.

Kaspersky didnt find anything. It could have been a re-infection from the recent WMF exploit.
Have you patched your system against this exploit yet? Please refer to my sig

KB912919 update
hey,
Well I just checked my update log in Windows Update, I get automatic updates and the KB912919 patch was downloaded today. Maybe that'll be it as far as re-exposure is concerned? That was what was allowing the virus to reinfect? |

The WMF vulnerability opens the door to almost every virus out there. If it weren't that serious, Microsoft wouldn't have released the patch 5 days ahead of schedule. You may read up about it here.. http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/
Can we consider this thread as resolved?

Hey Subs
That's great, read up on the patch. Had no idea how I managed to get infected again so quickly, guess windows automatic updating everyday is not enough in itself. I find this site to be extremely helpful and very clear, thanks a milllion for the help! |
