favset.exe and a few other problems
Hello,
I've followed the 5 steps in the sticky and it looks like I have a few virus that are being stubborn. The only noticable problem I'm having is that when I use a search engine (google, msn, etc) about every third link I click on takes me to an unintended site. I also used to have an ad on my desktop that I believe is associated "ideskbar", but I was able to get rid of it, but it looks like I'm going to need help getting rid of the search engine hijacker and the other adware. Here's what I got from a panda scan. Thanks in advance for any help! Alright, I had a few problems:
Quote: "After you have restarted, wait for HijackThis to launch automatically. With HiJackThis & place a check next to these items and select "Fix checked": R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {C1A4C4FE-25AE-5CF8-8720-FE945A32EE21} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmfou.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmfou.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cnftips] msag.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [iesetupdll] forces_elite.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [xwiz] syspanel.exe O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{30EB9319-9F1A-47B7-B02B-C042E30F91B8}: NameServer = 85.255.114.35,85.255.112.104 Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed." I couldn't find "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmfou.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmfou.exe" in my hijackthis screen, but I found the others. Quote "If you have not done so already, please enable the viewing of Hidden files From Windows Explorer, go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab. Tick - 'Show hidden files and folder' Untick - 'Hide file extensions for known types' Untick - 'Hide protected operating system files' Click Yes to confirm & then click OK Locate and delete the following files/folders: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmfou.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\favset.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\arc hive.jar-487b52a0-7ec1868f.zip Search for these msag.exe forces_elite.exe syspanel.exe " I followed the instructions exactly but I couldn't find: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmfou.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\favset.exe so I couldn't delete them, nor could I find: msag.exe forces_elite.exe syspanel.exe I've tried a few search engines and I don't seem to be getting hijacked anymore, so hopefully that means they're gone. However, I did the online scan and it said I have 28 viruses and 110 infected objects, so I assume we still have a bit work to do;-) I really appreciate the help so far!!! Please visit this website - http://virusscan.jotti.org
Submit thie file for a comprehensive scan & then post the results back here. C:\Program Files\Easy CD Ripper\Easy CD Ripper.exe * * * * * * For the meanwhile, please use Symantec's guide to remove quarantined files. Also delete this file - C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\ar3 .jar-724f57b4-4e9dba6e.zip

I can't find: C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\ar3 .jar-724f57b4-4e9dba6e.zip
But I can find: C:\Documents and Settings\Chris\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\ar3 .jar-724f57b4-4e9dba6e.idx Should I remove that one? I followed Symantec's guide and removed the quarantined file. Here is the scan report: Service load: 0% 100% File: Easy_CD_Ripper.exe Status: INFECTED/MALWARE MD5 307b613433b679901ce2c433a73e3b68 Packers detected: - Scanner results AntiVir Found nothing ArcaVir Found nothing Avast Found nothing AVG Antivirus Found nothing BitDefender Found nothing ClamAV Found nothing Dr.Web Found nothing F-Prot Antivirus Found nothing Fortinet Found nothing Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found Backdoor.Win32.Rbot.amm NOD32 Found nothing Norman Virus Control Found nothing UNA Found nothing VBA32 Found nothing Last file scanned at least one scanner reported something about: as, detected by: Scanner Malware name AntiVir X ArcaVir X Avast X AVG Antivirus X BitDefender X ClamAV X Dr.Web Adware.Shopper F-Prot Antivirus X Fortinet X Kaspersky Anti-Virus X NOD32 X Norman Virus Control X UNA X VBA32 X You're free to (mis)interpret these automated, flawed statistics at your own discretion. How long have you had the CD Ripper program? I'm inclined to think it's a false positive by Kaspersky. If you feel uncomfortable about it, please uninstall the program & delete the folder. Please post a fresh HJT log so that I can verify that you're still clean.

Your system is clean. Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats. It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay. Have a safe & happy computing day. ![]() Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
