Cry reformatted after winsock takeover, still having problems

I have ran Spybot, Microsoft AntiSpyware, Ad Aware, Spyware Doctor and Symantec Security. I keep losing my internet connection and the scroll on my touchpad quit working. I have encountered and deleted "WindowsSecurityCenterFirewallDisableNotify.zip" and a similar one that apparently disabled Symantec Notify. What is a girl to do?

Hello tinkerbellnhl and welcome to TSF,

Whatever may be causing your problems is not showing itself in this log. Please do the following:

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Standard CleanUp!"
*Uncheck the following:
-Delete Newsgroup cache
-Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
-Scan local drives for temporary files
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!

Let's see if this online scan will uncover anything for us:

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to buy the program for removal as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Please post that log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi, well I followed the instructions fom Ried and posted the results below. My touchpad is now working as I re-installed the driver. The disabling of firewall is still turning up and I keep getting alerts of remote addresses attempting to connect to me. Thanks so much for all the help!

Here are the results from virusscan.jotti.org and the log results from rootkitrevealer. When I was trying to save the log results from rootkit to the desktop a pop-up told me that the dektop was unavailable. I also saved it to my documents. It would not display in either location, so I did a search for the file. It turned up in C:\WINDOWS\system32 and opened in Notepad.

I am still cleaning the disablenotify issue through spybot daily. Today a new issue had presented. When I open up my laptop from standby the wireless internet is not connected. It says that there are no wireless networks available even though there are always at least 4 available when mine is not working. I have to repair the connection in order to connect.

Thanks for all the help!

Everything is appearing fine.

Run CleanUp! to puge those Temporary Internet files.

In addition, launch Internet Exploerer and go to Tools > Internet Options and clear 'Cookies' & 'History'.

OK, so what does this mean if everything appears normal yet I still get the registry error?

It means it may not be security related.

go to Control Panel > Security Centre and make sure the firewall is enabled.

If not, we'll start looking at registry fixes.

Yes, the firewall is enabled. I always have my firewalls and anti-spyware programs on active.

I am still having the wireless connection issue and the firewall issue. Here is a sample of some registry locations:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center
AntiVirusDisableNotify REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
AntiVirusOverride REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
FirewallDisableNotify REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (1)
FirewallOverride REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)
UpdatesDisableNotify REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

I tried deleting them all with System Restore off, in Safe Mode, but they all came back. Then I changed the last value to (0) and they all remained except for FirewallDisableNotify.

Here are a couple others I found that seem to follow the same pattern, but I have not altered them.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus
DisableMonitoring REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall
DisableMonitoring REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus
CorporateFeatures REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose [Yes] at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the [Tools] menu.
  • Click [Resident].
  • Uncheck the Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active. box.
  • In the File menu click [Exit] to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Please disable Webroot SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable Webroot SpySweeper:
  • Go to the Options>Program Options
  • Uncheck Load at Windows Startup
  • Click Shields & uncheck all items there
  • Uncheck Home page shield.
  • Automaticly restore default without notifiction

Please disable Spywareguard, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
  • Right click the running icon of Spywareguard located in the system tray
  • Go to Menu > File > Exit and confirm the programs close.

Now try changing those registry entries as you did before.

I disabled all of those programs as specified. I then made sure System Restore was disabled and started the computer in Safe Mode. I deleted all of the values that I listed in the last post. I then restarted the computer and ran Spybot. The same issue was still found. I also forgot to mention that when I start Windows there is a pop-up in the System Tray saying that my computer might be at risk because Symantec Firewall (I think it says Firewall, but it is only up for a very short time) is disabled, though it isn't. I re-ran HijackThis and here is the log:

Let's look a little deeper. Which program is claiming the firewall is disabled?

Download WinPFInd http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...r/WinPFind.zip and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.

Download Track qoo http://www.geekstogo.com/downloads/Trackqoo.zip
Save it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop. Unzip the Track qoo.vbs inside to your desktop. DO NOT run it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.!

Inside C:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.! Once the Scan is Complete it will make a txt file (log) of what was found.

1. Go to the WinPFind folder
2. Locate WinPFind.txt
3. Please post those results in your next post!

REBOOT to normal mode.

Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind!

So I need the following tool logs..

WinPFind.txt log
Track qoo.vbs log

what is the deal?

Well WinPFind will not work. I downloaded it to WinZip first and then extracted each file to C. I also just saved the whole zip file to C and then unzipped it there. Neither option worked. Once in Safe Mode I went in under my username and tried running it and went in under Administrator and tried running it. This is what happened:

I double-click to open WinPFind.exe. A pop-up says "File not found". I click on Scan and a pop-up says "Access violation at address 0044DE27 in module 'winpfind.exe'. Read of address 00000004.

I noticed that it says as long as the hard disk light is flashing that the program is running/working. The hard disk light was not flashing at all.

Trackqoo did work and here is the log:

p.s.

The program that is alerting me is Windows Security Center. It is actually telling me that Symantec AntVirus is disabled. When I click on the pop-up window to repair it as it tells me, it says that Symantec reports that its Antivirus is enabled and working fine.

Make sure Norton/Symantec is shut down when running WinPFind. When you extracted the files...they MUST be in the WinPFind folder. It should be located at C:\WinPFind It can't run directly from the C:\ drive.

If that still fails....let's try something else...

Open hijackthis...click...config..misctools. Check the 2 box’s next to "Generate Startup List" and then click "Generate Startup List". Post that log in your next post.

Roll Eyes

OK I got it to work:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

So between Trackqoo and WinPFind, do we have any clues here?

Log is clean....

I thought you had a firewall issue..but after reviewing the thread...it seams like a Symantec AntiVirus/Windows issue were windows isn't seeing a registry key that Symantec uses. Try reinstalling Symantec Antivirus as I think you may have had one of the Sbot worms that trashs the registry keys.

I completely uninstalled and reinstalled Symantec Client Security. Spybot is still reporting:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify!=dword:0

Windows Security is also still popping up the same message at start up.

This seams like a setting issue. Lets try this.....

Go into Start > Control Panel > Security Center > Resources (on the left hand side of the window – expand if necessary) > click "Change the way Security Center alerts me". This brings up an "Alert Setting" window. There are three possible alerts:

Firewall

Alert me if my computer might be at risk because of my firewall settings

Automatic Updates

Alert me if my computer might be at risk because of my Automatic Updates settings

Virus Protection

Alert me if my computer might be at risk because of my virus protection software settings

Make sure those are checked. When you run Spybot...and it picks that change up again...set spybot up to ignore it. It's a known bug within the program.

I also need you to check the following registry keys...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\
DomainProfile
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\
StandardProfile

Let me know the setting for this entry... "EnableFirewall" = "1"
Should be a 1 for Enable/True. If it's a Zero...change it.

Here's a list of the other Keys...the Sbot worm screws with..http://securityresponse.symantec.com...ybot.worm.html

Firewall notification was off in the Security Center, so I checked the box. Both of those registry keys were set to "0" and I changed them to "1". I also followed all of the instructions at the site you included. I had several of the problems, but not all of them.

When I open Security Center it displays that Windows Firewall is on. However, when I click on the Windows Firewall on the same screen under "Manage Security Settings for" it says that it is off and that "For your security, some settings are controlled by Group Policy.

I never created a "group", so I went to System, Computer Name and I am listed as having workgroup "2519" which is the numerical portion of my address. I tried to delete it, but then I can't save. I have to enter a workgroup name/number.
