Continued Pop Ups in IE
I continue to have have pop ups in IE after running all the recommended procedures/software (used www.greyk....17) guidelines. I'm not real savvy, but many of the pop ups are creating a file in user/local settings/Temp/CPTF/ folder. Don't know if this means anything. Below is the Hijack this log. I already have SP2, but this problem is new. Appreciate any help.

Hi vanon123 and thank you for your patience.
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions. I notice that you have Ewido installed have you run a scan? If so, did it find anything and did you save a log? If yes, please post the log with your next HJT log. If not, please update the definitions, run a further scan in safe mode and then post the log. Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option. Please download Cleanup! or use this Alternate Link if the main link does not work and install it. You will use this later. Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears). Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any) R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/yco...search/ie.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/yco.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/yco...search/ie.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/yco.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/yco.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/yco.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2B981C41-66BF-760E-F22E-99FEEB746BED} - (no file) O21 - SSODL: SysTray.Exiv - {2963ECFC-4E5C-2f3b-B334-D67434FC72E0} - (no file) Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked. *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temporary folders and does not make backups. Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from Start > All Programs). Set the program up as follows: Click Options Move the slider button down to Custom CleanUp! Check the following:
Uncheck the following :
Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner. 1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. *Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it * 2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place * Begin the scan by selecting My Computer *You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report. *Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan Please post a fresh Hijack This log so that we can check if your system is clean.

Still having pop up problems
Thanks for your advice. I've performed your recommendations - Hijack this, cleanup, then ActiveScan. Listed below are the reports from each. ActiveScan still reported problems, but I did not fix, per your recommendation. Not even sure how to other than using Microbells 5 steps which I did prior to sending the initial posting. Please help.

Hi vanon123
You still have the same HijackThis entries present in your log. Please follow these instructions carefully. If you are unsure of anything, please ask before going any further. Still having pop up problems
Thank you for your patience. Sorry about the Hijack this log - it was deleted, but I had copied the previous one. I did everything in SAFE mode. Hope this is correct. I did NOT find any MyWay files or folders. In short, I ran Hijack this, checked all item you asked and fixed, deketed the 2 files, ran Ewido (after ensuring that the definition files were up to date), ran CleanUp and then reran Hijack this for the log. Below are the 2 files. Still having trouble. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hi vanon123
Lets try looking a bit deeper. Please ensure that you do not create a HijackThis log from safe mode. We need to see all running processes on your system. Download StartDreck Unzip to its own folder and start the program:
Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application) Post the log in this thread. Download SilentRunners. Right click & choose Save As --> Save it to Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (like your anti-virus or anti-spyware programs -- if you're going to disable these, then disconnect from the Internet for this step). Double-click Silent Runners to run it. This will take a few minutes, and will create a file called "Startup Programs" followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all its contents here in your next post. Please download RootKitRevealer.zip. Unzip it to the desktop, run it, and click Scan. This will generate a log file. Please post the entire contents of the log file in your next reply. In your next post I need the StartDreck log, the SilentRunners vbs file, the RootkitRevealer log and a fresh HijackThis log run from normal mode.

Hi again
Launch Notedpad and copy everything in the box below. Save it as regfix.bat and all file types. Save it to your Desktop. Quote:
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during this fix. Please download AproposFix from here: http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet. Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following: 1) Restart your computer 2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8 (or the relevant key for your system). 3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear 4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts. When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Good Virginia - let's just make sure before we let you go. Please run SilentRunners once more and post the log. There is no need for a new HijackThis log.

You're above and beyond. Thanks again. Below is the SilentRunners log as requested. Was this something I could have avoided?

That's what I wanted to check - the registry fix does not seem to have taken. I've attached a file, RegFix.zip to this post. Save it to your desktop, then double click the zip file to open the archive and then run the regfix file - answer YES to any prompts.
Please let me know how this went.

The fix did not run correctly. Message read:
Registry Editor X Cannot import C:/Docume~..../Temporary Directory 1 for RegFix.zip/Regfix.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor. Did I miss a step? Virginia |

Hi Virginia
I think that was my fault - apologies. Please try the attached - open the zip file and extract the reg file to your desktop. Close the zip archive. Double click on the reg file on your desktop. You should get a message box asking if you want to add the information to the Registry - say YES. Assuming that works OK, please post another SilentRunners log to allow me to confirm that your system is OK.

THanks - I should have been able to figure that out. It ran fine and gave me the message that the info was written into the registry. I then ran SilentRunners and the results are below. Hope this did it, whatever it is.

Hi Virginia
Well done you are now clean. ![]() It was spyware that uses a rootkit to hide itself. Its often installed by downloaded ActiveX. How is the PC now is it running OK? If there are no further problems then lets tidy up. You can delete SilentRunners, StartDreck and RootKitRevealer. Reset Hidden Files To reset your hidden and system files:
System Restore To turn off System Restore click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. This will create a new Restore Point. IMPORTANT!!! Please ensure that Windows is patched against the WMF exploit. This is a dangerous vulnerability that opens the door to multiple infections; and the likely reason you are now infected. Visit Window's Update to get the KB912919 patch. Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. AD-AWARE Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here. IE-SPYAD IE-Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impairs attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here. MVPS HOSTS FILE The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. ALTERNATE BROWSERS Try the following free alternate browsers rather than Internet Explorer Firefox Opera FIREWALLS A good firewall will monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. NOTE: Microsoft's Firewall does not monitor outgoing traffic. If you do not have a firewall, here are 2 free ones available for personal use: Sygate Personal Firewall ZoneAlarm ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners: Anti-Spyware Tutorial Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available: Avast! AVG It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. OTHER PROTECTION Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here: Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software. In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL. MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER. Keep clean and enjoy your computing! Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
