Infected with Paytime,timesquare,StartCpl,winstall..lots of virus and Adware

The moment I switch on my laptop ,the wallpaper photo is stretched,on the right hand side of the screen various ads (gambling, xxx etc) links are there and if i open my IE it goes to "C:\Secure32.html" and mentions
that "your IP address is 72.226.193.78" and someone is accessing and that they know I am using "Mozilla/4.0" ( I am using IE ???)...
and yes if my laptop is connected to internet than after 5 min of use the Blue screen of death appears ...and the only way i can re start is by removing the battery ..
Also one more thing..after this infection my computer time changed from EST to CST....

Please find below my HJT Log ,would appreciate any help:

Welcome to TSF.

You have multiple infections there...we'll try to remove a majority of the junk first and then continue with the remaining infections leftover...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click...click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet. NOTE: If you have Windows 9x/ME, you don't need to run Ewido (skip this step).

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/adawareSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop (or Appearance)->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present. Also delete it.

Restart your computer to get back to Normal Mode..

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

* Click on 'Scan your PC' button. There should be a popup - if you have a pop-up blocker, make sure it's not blocking it.
* Click 'Check Now' & a pop-up window will appear.
* Enter your Country, State and E-mail Address & click 'Scan Now' - begin downloading Panda's ActiveX controls (8 MB size).
* Begin the scan by selecting My Computer.
* If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Ignore any entry it finds (since it wants you to buy the program for removal) as we will address this later.
* Click on see report. Then click Save report.
* Please post that log in your next reply.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for smitfiles.txt, Ewido and a new HijackThis log.

Updated Hijack this log

Thanks for your detailed reply .
I appreciate you taking out time and replying to my virus problem..
please find my updates below:
1) Before I got your reply ,I had installed the Panda platinum evaluation
software and had run it once..I am sorry if i screwed the clean up process
as explained.
2)Next I followed all the instructions as given:
a)Clenup :Ran successfully.
b)Hijackthis :Fix checked ...was able to find almost all of them except:
O2 - BHO: SearchToolbar - {08BEC6AA-49FC-4379-3587-4B21E286C19E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gxfke.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe

3)Now while running the "smitREM" ,"Ewido" and "online Panda scan",these
three scanning processes are not able to run successfully and are getting ended abruptly in the middle...
-->smitRem --: gets ended with "Microsoft error" saying" "SecuritySuite.exe has encountered some problem...."
--->Ewido --> ends while scanning files in "Temp" as /localsettings\Temp\Pcf1.tmp.
also while scanning ewido always beeped for adware "Hotbar" and everytime i would remove it it would come back again...
--->Online panda scan hangs at :Files\Content.IE5\desktop.ini.

Note:I tried all the above things many times but same results and hence
was not able to get the log report.there is a "smitrem" file which i am
pasting below but i am not sure if its proper.

4)But some good news is that :
a) initially i used to get the Blue screen of death and computer used to hang if i was connected to internet.
b) also all those advertisements which used to appear on the right hand
side of the desktop (gambling, dating etc) is not there.

5) one more thing which i observed i am not able to scroll through my background in display properties:
Display properties -->Desktop -->Background.

ImP: I am finding this file known as "Installerus.exe" in my C:\
i have not done anything to it..let me know should i go ahead and delete it manually...

Hello Makwana,

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix. Please make sure you have an ACTIVE internet connection as the tool will need to download additional files and a program.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php...=post&id=43811
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is NORMAL.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts. Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items:

Click Fix Checked. Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

---------------------------

Delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ msctl32.dll

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Standard CleanUp!"
*Uncheck the following:
-Delete Newsgroup cache
-Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
-Scan local drives for temporary files
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility

---------------------------

Please try the online scan at Panda again. *Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:fixwareoutreport.txt, along with a new HijackThis log and the results of the Panda ActiveScan

Updated log files

I followed the steps and was able to find all the "O17" keys and fixed it
using Hijack this.
However I was not able to find the file "msctl32.dll" in c:\windows\system32.
Also still i am not able to scroll through the files in the "dektop" tab in my display poperties.
Please find below the logs:

------- Fix log ---
Note: I had to run this tool twice since for the first time ,my laptop got hanged and had to re start the process..in the first log file it showed some regestry keys which it had deleted..and after running it second time it overwrite the original file :(

Panda online scan

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/cws.searchmeup Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\paytime.exe
Adware:adware/secure32 Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\country.exe
Possible Virus. Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\csbmj.exe

==========================================
Let me know what I should do next..
Also one strange thing which i noticed:
As mentioned in my first post..after the infection my PC time was changed to CST from EST...today i changed the time back to EST and after that i got expiration warnings from "Panda" evaluation S/W (right now its uninstalled) a and also from "Ewido" tool...whereas Panda was 30 day evaluation and "Ewido" had 14 day...

Thanks in advance for your time..

We're getting there.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. (it's important that you get version v2.0.0.175)

Reboot into Safe Mode.(tapping F8 or F5)

Start KillBox.
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Ctrl-C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\paytime.exe
C:\WINDOWS\country.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\csbmj.exe

Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard
*Click on the dropdown menu next to Full Path of File to Delete field.
*Verify that the filenames you pasted are found there
Select/tick the following:
* Delete on Reboot
* End Explorer Shell While Killing File
* Unregister.dll Before Deleting" if it's not grayed out.
Click the RED X button.

Click [Yes] at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt. Click [YES] at the Pending Operations prompt.

Reboot into Normal Mode. Run another scan with Panda and post the results here once more. How is your system behaving now?

Updated Panda log

Hi,
yeah..it seems we are already there..
Well, please find the updated panda log below:

===================================

Incident Status Location Adware:adware/cws.searchmeup Not disinfected
C:\WINDOWS\ms1.exe Adware:adware/secure32 Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\secure32.html
===================================
while running the panda log it prompted to check my default outlook client...(which uptill now it had not),i just clicked OK and it went ahead.
The system seems to have improved a lot (90 %+) but i am not sure that it is 100% virus/adware free...
I have the following questions:
1) Still I am not able to select any wallpaper from my display properties since
as mentioned before the desktop tab of my display properties seems to be still infected.on this tab i am not able to scroll down /up.The following links/buttons are disabled: "Background" ,"browse","Position".

2) Any idea how did my laptop got infected with so many virus..i know it might sound stupid but just curious since i have not been using any Antivirus from past 8 months (since my Norton AV expired) and nothing happened to
it till 29 december when I had forgot to switch the laptop before going out and it remained on the whole day.

3)In my C:/ there is this .exe file which says "installerus" ,on searching
on google for this it says its trojan.
But its not been reported in any scanning as malware..
any idea on this..

4) Once this infection problem is solved ,whilch Antivirus you would suggest .
I have been using the free version of "AVG Girosoft" on my desktop which i had.

Thanks a lot again for your time...

Hi Makwana,

I'll have preventive measures for you when we're through here.

Download WinPFind and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder. Do Not run it yet.

From Normal Mode:

Launch KillBox.exe & select the following options:
*Delete on Reboot
Select all the filenames listed below & then right-click & select Copy:

C:\WINDOWS\ms1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\secure32.html

Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard
*Click on the dropdown menu next to Full Path of File to Delete field.
*Verify that the filenames you pasted are found there
Select/tick the following:
* Delete on Reboot
* End Explorer Shell While Killing File
* Unregister.dll Before Deleting" if it's not grayed out.
Click the RED X button.

Click [Yes] at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt. Click [YES] at the Pending Operations prompt and reboot directly into Safe Mode:

Inside C:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.! Once the Scan is Complete it will make a txt file (log) of what was found. Save that log and post it here.

Restart one more time back into Normal Mode, run a scan with HijackThis and save the log to post here.

Hi Milind,

Run the smitrem.exe once again and let's see if it will run properly this time and take out the remaining registry entry. Here are the instructions once again:

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Double click on the smitrem.exe. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

See if this file is still present on your system and delete it if found:

C:\WINDOWS\ desktop.html

Now see if you can reset your desktop:

Go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Website>Uncheck and delete if present:
  • "Security Info"
  • "Warning Message"
  • "Security Desktop"
  • "Warning Homepage"

Reboot into Normal Mode

I'd like to try a different online scanner and see if this one shows us the installerus.exe you mentioned earlier:

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Kaspersky WebScanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
*Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Now click on Scan Settings
*In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
*Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
*Standard
*Scan Options:
*Scan Archives
*Scan Mail Bases
*Click OK
Now under select a target to scan:
*Select My Computer
This will program will start and scan your system.
*The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
*Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected
the Save as Text button:
*Save the file to your desktop.
Copy and paste that information in your next post along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello Milind,

Go ahead and delete that file:

C:\installerus.exe

If you get a message that the file is 'in use', delete it from Safe Mode.

Were you able to reset your desktop? How is your system behaving now?

That is good news. Let's continue with these important final steps.

The anti-virus you have is fine. It takes a combination of anti-malware programs to safeguard you effectively.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
Windows XP
===============
Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
* Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
* Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Enable Windows Auto Update
*Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
*Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
*Under Settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

Create a new System Restore point
Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will prevent any reinfection from previous restore points.

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles:

HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein
THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL
MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER

Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

More information and downloads are available at the following links:

Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Hi Milind,

I'll take care of moving this thread to the Resolved section.

Feel free to post a HijackThis log anytime. It doesn't have to be for your own PC. It would be helpful if you mention that it is a friend's computer, etc.
