Hijacked

Hi all,

I have had some bad going's on which only started tonight. My wallpaper was replaced by a "supposed" windows alert saying I was infected with spyware and now its all going to hell in a hand basket.

The OS is XP Home and I have gone through an anti virus scan, MS Anti Spyware, Ad-Aware and SP S&D. Still I am getting issues with my browser being hijacked and some spyware is not being removed.

Here is a log from HJT

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Im sorry I shouldve added some more details.

The wallpaper has been changed to a pic that says I am infected with spyware. My browsers home page has been changed to "About : Blank" and it is some crappy search engine that always comes up with pills or other stuff. I cannot change it back to what I want with any of the anti spyware programs. I was just watching my computer and MS Anti spyware keeps on putting up an orange screen saying a BHO has been blocked. I seen too much was happening so I yanked the network card and stopped it from getting out to the net.

I also had the windows firewall popup saying it noticed suspicious activity on the network. The website that my new home page is downloading its pics from is called http://enjoywebsurf.com

Here is a list of entries that SP S&D will not remove no matter how many times I try

Hello PPGB and welcome to TSF,

This fix may take a few rounds as you have one of the more difficult CoolWebSearch infections.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Download the following programs and tools. Please do not run them until directed to do so.

Ewido Security Suite
  • Install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

HSFix

About Buster - Unzip to a new folder. Update About Buster & exit the program once that is completed.

CWShredder - Save it to Desktop.
  • Open CWShredder and click [I AGREE]
  • Click [Check For Update]
  • Close CWShredder after updating

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

---------------------------

S& D Spybot's Tea Timer

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the "Tools" menu.
  • Click "Resident".
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Microsoft AntiSpyware

Please disable Microsoft AntiSpyware, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
  • Right click the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon located in the system tray
  • Click on Security Agents Status (Enabled)
  • Click on Disable Real-time Protection

---------------------------

Go to My Computer->[b]Tools[b]->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

---------------------------

Click Start->Run - type SERVICES.MSC & then click on the OK button
*Locate the service - Network Security Service
*Double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
*Under the General tab:
*Stop the service by using the Stop button.
*Change the Startup type to Disabled & then click on the OK button
Then start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools...> Delete an NT service...
*In the popup box that appears, copy/paste 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I (**please note there is a space before the 11, make sure to include it.) Click on the OK button

---------------------------

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

---------------------------

Run a scan in HijackThis. 'Check' each of the following if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\pvreb.dll/sp.html#93256
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\pvreb.dll/sp.html#93256
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\pvreb.dll/sp.html#93256
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Class - {3AF7AF61-E9EC-FF85-4730-D2B5711A9B30} - C:\WINDOWS\ipqv32.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [A.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\Colleen\LOCALS~1\Temp\A.tmp.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [A.tmp.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\Colleen\LOCALS~1\Temp\A.tmp.exe
O16 - DPF: Yahoo! Bingo -
O16 - DPF: Yahoo! Chat -
O23 - Service: Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdkek32.exe

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

---------------------------

Delete the following Files if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\ pvreb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ ipqv32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ sdkaz.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ sdkek32.exe

---------------------------

Run CWShredder & click on [Fix].

Run About Buster and click Begin Removal. Once that's done, just hit the OK button. Open up the 'Ab LogFile.txt' (which was created in the same folder as AboutBuster) and post the log here.

Double-click on HSfix.reg & answer YES when prompted to merge into the registry.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Standard CleanUp!"
*Uncheck the following:
-Delete Newsgroup cache
-Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
-Scan local drives for temporary files
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Do NOT reboot/logoff when prompted.
Note: [b][color=teal][size=1]CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!

---------------------------

Run Ewido:
*Click [Scanner]
*Click [Complete System Scan] to begin scanning.
*Click [OK] when prompted to clean files

With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click [OK].

Once finished, click the [Save report] button
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

---------------------------

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm *Requires Internet Explorer.
Make sure you click the "Free Online Virus Scan" in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan.
  1. Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click On 'Scan Now'
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
  4. Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
    * You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
  5. If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report

All the entries that I need to remove are not from

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\pvreb.dll/sp.html#93256

to

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\estpl.dll/sp.html#93256

Looking at the log the dll has changed, should I go ahead and remove the new estpl.dll entries instead of the pvreb.dll

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\estpl.dll/sp.html#93256
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\estpl.dll/sp.html#93256
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\estpl.dll/sp.html#93256
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\estpl.dll/sp.html#93256

Bumping in less the 24 hours is generally frowned upon, but I understand your plight...you can't continue until you know...so.....

FIX ALL R0 & R1 ENTRIES THAT LOOKS SIMILAR TO THIS - res://C:\WINDOWS\****.dll/sp.htm

and make note of the dll names for deletion in the fix where noted.

Ab LogFile.txt

I couldnt get a log file from this program and I got this error when the program has stopped scanning

Run-time error '339'

Component 'comctl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid

But watching this program run, it said that there were no ads, if this helps at all.

Panda ActiveScan

There were no infected files with the online scanner so it did not produce a log file for the scan.

On a plus side, my wallpaper has returned to normal. But I'll let the experts be the judge.

Thanks

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running.
Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT)

Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry)

Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.

Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log".

I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro scan tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system.

Let us know how things are running.

I would also like to include the latest report from Spybot Search and Destroy. After all these scans and removals I still have this problem.

The C-Dilla entrys are normal. It's installed...so the registry entrys remain.

C-Dilla License Management software. Used for any program that uses C-dilla Protection, example: 3D Studio Max 4.x and some PC games. Removing it may disable some some of the games or the program that installed it from starting. We can remove it if you want but be aware of what I stated.

Because you had a "Desktop" hijack and "Spysheriff" is indicated..I'm going to run it's fix...just to make sure nothing is left over. Skip getting the tools you already have...but run them were indicated in the fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
.

Open add/remove programs and remove Fun Web Products if listed.

Click START…RUN…Type in regedit. Make sure just “My Computer” is showing in the left pane and click..FILE….EXPORT…and save a copy some were in case you make a mistake. Now navigate to each of the following keys and delete the file/folder/entry I highlighted in RED.

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\ Fun Web Products

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\ Fun Web Products

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\ Fun Web Products

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Software\ Fun Web Products

Close Regedit.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

*Note* Update your version of Spybot to 1.4.

The only problem Ive had now with the machine is every now and then a virus will be detected but its in C:\System Volume Information\_restore files. I delete the files when the come up but

Your comment at the end was cut off.....

Any items in System Volume Information can be removed by flushing the System Restore points, which we will do when we are sure you are clean. As Panda found nothing, and your HJT log appears clean, and Ewido found only cookies, I would like to know how your system is behaving before sending you off with final instructions.

Grrr cut off comment, lol,

I believe I was saying that it disturbs me that these files are being found in the System Restore. Ive been told that these bad files can be restored and infecting the computer again.

The computer is running fine, I came across another post that subs said were some good programs so Ive installed those programs as well to help stop future infections.

SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard
IE-SPYAD
MVPS HOST FILE
Winpatrol

Hopefully nothing more comes into this computer

Yes, if you were to use System Restore to go back to a point where these infections were present, a reinfection could occur. Now that we know you're satisfied, I'll post some final instrutctions for you, including a reset of a new, clean System Restore point. You've already taken care of some of what will be posted.....it's my standard closing speech....so ignore reference to those programs you've already installed. Here goes:

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD
IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here
  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. It can be downloaded here - MVPS Hosts file
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

    Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available:
  • Avast!
  • AVG

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
