Need help with a HijackThis log

Hi, I'm a new user to this forum. I have read a few threads about anti-spyware techniques, primarily from KRC (greyknight17). I have followed the steps in his Anti-Spyware tutorial. I have had extensive and ongoing issues with unauthorized installed spyware. Currently, after running KRC's diagnostics, I think most of the spyware has been removed. However, I am still having computer performance issues (primarily slow boot up, browsing, program startup and navigation in general).

Attached is the scan log for my HijackThis scan. I'd appreciate feedback on whether or not there is any spyware here that I need to remove. Also, if you can suggest any other troubleshooting (outside of spyware) for my computer system performance issues.

You have more that one AntiVirus product on this system, and that can cause conflicts and slowness. There are parts of Symantec, AVG is there, as is McAfee. I'd recommend you choose one (AVG is the one I would keep) and uninstall the others right away.

It looks as though you've had a recent battle with vundo. It appears to be only a stray registry entry at this time, but we'll know more when we poke it with a stick.

You have several legit toolbars installed...and many startup items...all these compete for system resources and can cause slowdowns in boot time.

Next, please do this:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).

Choose Save, NOT run, and save to your desktop
Double-click the tmas-web-scan.exe icon
It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
Click "Start Scan"

After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"

Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
Click Exit.

Reboot your computer. I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system.

In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner

Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
Click Scan Now
Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls

Begin the scan by selecting My Computer

If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
Click on see report. Then click Save report

Post the contents of the report in your next reply

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

You can leave the O15s. I assume you've made no fixes with HJT yet.

Can you keep McAfee firewall and not have the AV package? If so, sure if you like it and are comfortable with it, go ahead. It appears as though portions of McAfee's AV product are still installed.

One other thing to note about software you have on your system, is about MS's product:

MicroSoft AntiSpyware Program:

Because of recent changes in the way this program now defines and detects spyware/adware it is no longer recommend as a spyware removal tool. Microsoft as downgraded several adware/spyware programs that it used to detect and remove and now lists them simply as “Ignore”

These are some of the adware/spyware programs that this program will NOT prompt you to remove. Claria, 180Solutions, WhenU, New.net, most WhenU apps, eZula,TopText, Gain/Gator, and Webhancer. These are all known adware/spyware programs and hijackers. Basically this product can no longer be trusted!! I recommend you remove it

Here are some other tools which will do the job quite well:

IESpy-Ad (free)
SpywareBlaster (free)
WinPatrol (free)
CounterSpy (free trial).

The Panda scan references an orphaned registry entry, which with no file called will do you no harm. Panda detects it but does not pinpoint the location of the entry. If it had provided the location, we may have it removed via manual Registry editing. I do not recommend that you rummage through the Registry looking for this entry. We do not want to risk causing irrepairable damage to the Registry.

I see you have Ewido on your system. You could see if it will pick up the registry entries. Update Ewido's definitions and run the scan in safe mode.

Other than that, your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point

click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
select the System Restore Tab
tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
click Apply
then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update

Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. AD-AWARE

IE-SPYAD
IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here
MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. It can be downloaded here - MVPS Hosts file
ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

OK, TB, thanks for all of your help. I finished the remaining troubleshooting and installed the remaining AS and spyware monitoring software that you suggested. I also installed the Panda 2006 AV & AS software. However, as I mentioned previously, I uninstalled my McAfee & Norton firewalls, so now I'm not sure if I have any firewall installed (with ewido, AVG, or Panda). Please take a look at my latest HJT log, and let me know if I should still install a firewall. If so, which of the 4 that you mention do you think is the best?

Well, now you have a different potential problem, in that more than one AntiVirus program installed can cause issues. AVG is an excellent program. Panda is well respected, but I only have experience with their online scanner.

This is what PCWorld says about the Panda Titanium 2006:

So, it would appear that you have firewall protection. If you've already purchased the Panda Platinum, go ahead with it, and feel good about your protection. If you have not, and want to have excellent free protection, use AVG and ZoneAlarm together. This is the combo I generally recommend. Either way, choose only one of each. More than one AV or firewall can cause conflict.

All the Firewalls I've listed are solid products, and it comes to a matter of personal preference. I go the free route, because they work well, and I'm cheep!

Thanks again, TB. Just writing back to say that you can close this thread, if you've not already done so. Also, just wanted to post the history here for other potential viewers of the information. The Panda Titanium 2006 that I had was the free trial version, which expired after 15 days or so. Therefore, since like you, I'm cheap too :), I unistalled Panda and went with AVG AV and ZoneAlarm together. As you stated, this appears to be an excellent protection combination, and, in conjunction with your other recommended solutions, has virtually eliminated my spyware and performance issues!

I appreciate all of the knowledgeable insight and valuable service provided, and plan to donate to the forum. I do have an additional follow-up question/issue on the ZoneAlarm Firewall, which I will raise in a separate thread.

I have read a few threads about anti-spyware techniques, primarily from KRC (greyknight17). I have followed the steps in his Anti-Spyware tutorial. I have had extensive and ongoing issues with unauthorized installed spyware. Currently, after running KRC's diagnostics, I think most of the spyware has been removed. However, I am still having computer performance issues (primarily slow boot up, browsing, program startup and navigation in general). Attached is the scan log for my HijackThis scan. There are parts of Symantec, AVG is there, as is McAfee. I'd recommend you choose one (AVG is the one I would keep) and uninstall the others right away. It looks as though you've had a recent battle with vundo. It appears to be only a stray registry entry at this time, but we'll know more when we poke it with a stick. You have several legit toolbars installed...and many startup items...all these compete for system resources and can cause slowdowns in boot time. Next, please do this: Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. I assume you've made no fixes with HJT yet. Can you keep McAfee firewall and not have the AV package? If so, sure if you like it and are comfortable with it, go ahead. It appears as though portions of McAfee's AV product are still installed. One other thing to note about software you have on your system, is about MS's product: MicroSoft AntiSpyware Program: Because of recent changes in the way this program now defines and detects spyware/adware it is no longer recommend as a spyware removal tool. Microsoft as downgraded several adware/spyware programs that it used to detect and remove and now lists them simply as “Ignore” These are some of the adware/spyware programs that this program will NOT prompt you to remove. Claria, 180Solutions, WhenU, New.net, most WhenU apps, eZula,TopText, Gain/Gator, and Webhancer. These are all known adware/spyware programs and hijackers. Basically this product can no longer be trusted!! I recommend you remove it Here are some other tools which will do the job quite well: AdawareSE (free) Spybot Search and Destroy (Teatimer Enabled) (free) IESpy-Ad (free) SpywareBlaster (free) WinPatrol (free) CounterSpy (free trial). Panda detects it but does not pinpoint the location of the entry. If it had provided the location, we may have it removed via manual Registry editing. I do not recommend that you rummage through the Registry looking for this entry. We do not want to risk causing irrepairable damage to the Registry. I see you have Ewido on your system. You could see if it will pick up the registry entries. Update Ewido's definitions and run the scan in safe mode. Other than that, your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Reset hidden/system files and folders Click Start. Open My Computer. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View tab. Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option. Select the Hide file extensions for known types option. Select the Hide protected operating system files option. Click Yes to confirm. Click OK. I finished the remaining troubleshooting and installed the remaining AS and spyware monitoring software that you suggested. I also installed the Panda 2006 AV & AS software. However, as I mentioned previously, I uninstalled my McAfee & Norton firewalls, so now I'm not sure if I have any firewall installed (with ewido, AVG, or Panda). Also, just wanted to post the history here for other potential viewers of the information. The Panda Titanium 2006 that I had was the free trial version, which expired after 15 days or so. Therefore, since like you, I'm cheap too :), I unistalled Panda and went with AVG AV and ZoneAlarm together. As you stated, this appears to be an excellent protection combination, and, in conjunction with your other recommended solutions, has virtually eliminated my spyware and performance issues! I appreciate all of the knowledgeable insight and valuable service provided, and plan to donate to the forum. I do have an additional follow-up question/issue on the ZoneAlarm Firewall, which I will raise in a separate thread. Many thanks for your help, Jeff
