You have an infection that we can help you remove, but before we do, can you please tell us what you deleted? Was it files or HJT entries, or both? Can you also tell us the exact error message Adaware is giving you now?

Hi, thanks so much for helping.

Unfortunately I'm not quite sure what I deleted. As for Ad-aware I was getting a host of error messages about different .dll files.

I ran AVG today which got rid of more things. I thought I messed things up big time because IE wouldn't run [because of a missing WININET.DLL file], but I've just downloaded the .dll, and IE can run now.

This is the latest HJT file:

For the Adaware problem, without seeing exact error messages, you may be best off uninstalling it and reinstalling it. If the messages are related to Windows dlls missing, then you will have to replace them using SystemFileChecker or via download.

Looks like AVG has done you some good, as several trojans are not showing.....but a couple remain. Let's go to work.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show all files' is checked under the 'Hidden Files' section. Also make sure there is no checkmark beside 'Hide file extensions for known file types'.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmiml.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\dmiml.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cshsm.exe] cshsm.exe
O21 - SSODL: Internet Explorer - {F28A40D7-AD0E-034A-C651-5F0ED76232E6} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Glmjeh32.dll (file missing)

Delete the following Files if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\dmiml.exe
cshsm.exe<<<find via Start>Find
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Glmjeh32.dll

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click Scan Now
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Click on Start->Settings->Control Panel->Java Plug-in and click on the Cache tab. Then click on the Clear button and hit OK.

If you haven't already, uninstall your current version of Adaware, and download it again, please at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and install it Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware at http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#adaware for better scan results. Do not run it yet. Once you've updated it, and customised the settings, close out Adaware.

Download KillBox v2.0.0.175.exe You will use this later.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop. Do not run it yet.

Download CleanUp! and install it. CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Launch KillBox.exe & select the following options:
  • delete on Reboot
Select all the filenames below & then right-click & select Copy

  • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\oleext.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ll.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\sywsvcs.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\~update.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\hgqhp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cskhm.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\dmala.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\hlmicro.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\idemlog.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\backups\backup-20051129-210243-529.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\backups\backup-20051129-212230-167.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\backups\backup-20051130-101935-808.dll
    C:\q940856.exe
* Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard
* Click the RED X button.
* Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
* Click Yes at the 'Pending Operations prompt'.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present. Remove the check by "View my Active desktop as a web page".
Click OK then Apply and OK.

Reboot in normal mode, and run a new scan with HJT. Save the log and post it here.

Also run a new scan with Panda, and post the results here.

Well done! Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the View option
  • Select the Folder Options option.
  • Select the View tab option.
  • In the Advanced settings box Under the Hidden files folder,
  • Select the Do not show hidden or system files option
  • Also Select Hide file extensions for known file types
  • Click Apply to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • AD-AWARE
Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD
IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here
  • MVPS HOST FILE
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. It can be downloaded here - MVPS Hosts file
  • ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online antivirus scanners:

    Anti-Spyware Tutorial

Here are two very good free Antivirus products which are available:
  • Avast!
  • AVG

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.
A tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
