Hijack this Log - help
On one of my laptops, I can no longer log into several websites such as yahoo mail and various bank account sites. for example, when I go to the yahoo mail login page, I type in my username/password, and it brings me to an error page.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.
Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido. If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: Viewpoint SideStep Weatherbug Run a scan in HijackThis. Try updating Ewido instead. Then:
Please download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Do not run it yet! Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: *Click "Options..." *Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!" *Put a check next to the following:
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted. WARNING - CleanUp! will delete all files and folders contained within Temporary Directories. If you knowingly have items you would like to keep stored in these locations, Move them now!!! Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. Run Ewido:
* Ewido scan would require at least an hour. I suggest that you go grab a cup of coffee & do something else while you wait for it to complete. Reboot back to Normal Mode and post the results from Ewido.

When I click on Start update, it says "connection could not be established" on the bottom of the program. Could this be related to the problem I'm having?
Also, I'm not sure if this helps, but I went to uk.yahoo.com and was able to login to yahoo mail from there... still having the same problem from yahoo.com, and other sites like chase.com, americanexpress.com, etc. I followed the cleanup! instructions, didn't help though. Thanks for all the help so far though! |

Perhaps Norton could be interferring?? Try disabling Norton and then try updating Ewido again.
Other things to try:
Let me know how you get on. Alternative Online scan: Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Kaspersky WebScanner Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

it looks like it found two things. but i didn't see anything saying it had deleted or fixed the viruses?

Downloaded Mozilla firefox, but it can't open any webpages at all?
Moved the Security and Privacy Tabs around to medium-low, and low, and high, no change. It's on the default medium right now. reset the modem and router, and reinstalled the router software (linksys) also. I also read on someone's site about reducing the mtu from 1500 to a lower number, but that didn't help. any suggestions? |

Did you try disabling Norton??
Something is preventing internet access, and the scans conclude it's unlikely a malicious virus. Let's see if there's a setting in Internet Explorer that's causing this problem. Go into Internet Explorer->Tools->Internet Options->Connections tab. Click on your default connection and click on the Settings button. Then check the box that says 'Automatically detect settings'. Then uncheck 'Use a proxy server for this connection' if it's checked. If that fails: Let's try registering Internet Explorer's DLL files. Go to Start->Run and copy and paste the following into the Run box and hit OK (go to Start->Run again for each one): regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll regsvr32 Shell32.dll regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll regsvr32 Mshtml.dll regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Finally, it all works!
So, I did previously try disabling Norton... such that at least the icon in the taskbar had the circle with a line through it, and it read "Norton antivus disabled" when I moused over. I still couldn't connect though. So, I completely uninstalled all the Norton software from my computer (there were 3 distinct listings in the add/remove programs window) and now I can access and login to all the websites. I'm going to try reinstalling Norton to see if it'll work properly, but I guess that was the problem. Anything else I should do to keep the laptop safe? This forum is great btw. I clicked through the donation link. is snail mail the only way to do it right now?
