Trying to get rid of Sober Virus
Hi,
On monday I opened a file and got the Sober Virus. I looked up information on how to clean my system and remove the virus. I followed the steps that I found. I have scanned my computer several times and Norton and AVG don't find any viruses. The problem is I still think it is on my computer somewhere. I have a hard time shutting off my computer from the start menu. It just freezes after I click shut off and stays on. I have followed the 5 steps recommended before posting but had a problem updating windows as well. Everything else was fine (downloading software, removing spyware, etc) It seems that the updates fail to download and install. I am waiting for a response from the Windows tech about the problem. I hope this wont be a big problem to get help from you. I am running Windows XP btw. My HJT log is below. Hello and Welcome
Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of fixes as soon as they are posted. I notice that you have more than one anti-virus programs on your machine. That's not a good idea!! Alike firewalls, anti-virus programs have conflicts co-existing with each other & may produce undesirable results. Please uninstall ALL leaving only one of them. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Please download these additional files/programs. Do not run them until instructed to do so. Unless otherwise stated, they should be stored in same directory as the HiJackThis program. CleanUp.exe - Install. Dr.Web CureIT! CWShredder - Save it to Desktop.
SpSeHjfix - Save to a new folder 'UNPLUG'/DISCONNECT YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE INTERNET WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED DOWNLOADING This webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. Please save the following instructions in Notepad. I have customed my instructions on the assumption that you are using Notepad. It may lead to some confusion should you choose to do otherwise. If there's anything that you don't understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding with the fixes. There should not be any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * With HiJackThis & place a check next to these items and select "Fix checked": O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D8511807-40D8-4068-8AE0-0BF20E0F4E39} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmla.dll (file missing) O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [_Windows] C:\WINDOWS\WinSecurity\services.exe * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following: 1. Restart your computer 2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8. 3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear 4. Select the option to run Windows in Safe Mode. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Doubleclick the "drweb-cureit.exe" and click "ok" in the prompt window that will open ,asking "start the express scan now". It will first make a quick scan of your system, let it clean what it find, and when it says "done" Click on the green screwdriver- Actions Tab- Adware-Dialers-Riskware-Hacktools, use dropdown menu and select -Delete Click on the drive(s) you want to scan . A red dot will mark the selected drive(s) . Then hit the green arrow in lower right corner It will now scan your drive(s), say yes to all * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * If you have not done so already, please enable the viewing of Hidden files From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.
Locate and delete the following files/folders: (let me know if you fail to find/delete any)
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Run Cleanup! using the following configuration: 1. Click Options... 2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp! 3. Uncheck the following:
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted. * CleanUp! will not create any backups!! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Run SpSeHjfix and click on - Start Disinfection If SpSeHjfix finds the "system clean", it will not proceed with the next stage. Otherwise, it may reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process. A log of the fix will be created in the containing folder. Run CWShredder & Click the Fix button. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * After you have rebooted, please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report. *Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * In your next post, please include fresh logs from:

I have unistalled AVG anti virus leaving just Norton Virus and Firewall on my computer. I was unable to download Dr. Web CureIt. Everytime I tried to download and save the file it said "internet connection has reset". Could you recommend another program or a way that I can download this program? Thanks,
Austin |

Are you on dial up? Please do the fix without Dr.Web CureIT!.
We'll catch any remaining files with the online scans.

But during the middle of the scan it looked like a create profile window came up. Both times Outlook was the user name. The first time I hit ok and scan ended saying no viruses, second time cancelled window and scan ended saying no viruses. I don't know if the scan fully completed. Also I was not able to find this file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmla.dll Other than that everything went great. BTW I have another computer that has the trojan cryptb virus and trojan irc/backdoor.sdbot.myx should Ido the same thing you recommended for this virus to get rid of the trojan viruses? Or should I start a new thread? Thanks for all your help Austin |

Austin,
It's advisable that you start a new thread for the other computer. You might also wanna reduce the chance of this incident reoccuring by upgrading your OS to SP2. Your system is clean. Kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats. It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay. Have a safe & happy computing day. ![]() Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

Thank you so much once again for helping me to clean this system. This is my daily computer that I use for school and work. Without it I would be in a huge world of hurt. I will download the other programs you suggested to keep me protected in the future.
Thanks again and this is a fabulous service you offer. Austin
