Possible virus or spyware problem
I was on my computer today when i ran a progam that suddenly changed my desktop to say that I had a serious spyware problem. It then tried to install spyware sheriff and i tried my best to stop it. I couldnt get my desktop back or replace that ugly new one, so i ran two antispyware programs and they found nothing, and also ran norton antivirus on safemode and it found 2:Trojan.ByteVerify problems and it apperently got rid of them. But I still cant change the desktop and everything else seems fine. Here is my hijackthislog thanks.

Hello GDIMEW,
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop. Double click on the file and it will extract it’s files into it's own folder on the desktop. Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop. Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ Please read Ewido Setup Instructions Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet. If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates: Ad-Aware SE Setup Don't run it yet! Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
Please disable Microsoft AntiSpyware as it may interfere with the fixes below: Microsoft AntiSpyware *Click on Options>Settings. *In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection. *Under Startup Options, Deselect Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup. *Under Real-time spyware threat protection, Deselect Enable real-time spyware threat protection. *After you've done these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware. *Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware. Go to My Computer->[b]Tools[b]->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading: * select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: BestBuy Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus.../search/ie.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus.../search/ie.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {01E69986-A054-4C52-ABE8-EF63DF1C5211} - (no file) O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HXDL.EXE] C:\Program Files\BestBuy\HelpExpress\HXDL.EXE -from="HXIUL.EXE" -to="HXIUL.EXE" -run If you set the following entry yourself, you may leave it: O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.bestbuy.msn.com O20 - Winlogon Notify: msctl32.dll - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctl32.dll (file missing) Close HijackThis. Delete the following folder: C:\Program Files\BestBuy C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctl32.dll Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds. Run Ewido:
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present. Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked! Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log , Ewido Log, and the smitfiles.txt log. |

You don't need to purchase the Panda software. Post the scan results here and we can work off of that. If you didn't save the results, please run the scan again, save the log and post it here please.

Reboot into Safe Mode.
Delete the following files: C:\WINDOWS\kl.exe C:\WINDOWS\secure32.html C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\YPSR\Quarantine <--Empty the contents of this folder Follow the instructions outlined here to clear Sun Java's cache. Reboot into Normal Mode. Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button). *Save it to your desktop. *Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe) *It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions". *Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open. *Click "Start Scan" *After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results" *Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now". Click Exit. Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them in your next post along with a new HijackThis log. |

Hi,
How is your system running now? Upload this file C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctl32.dll to http://virusscan.jotti.org/ and submit it. Wait for the analysis and post it here |

Hi GDIMEW,
When we're through cleaning your system, I'll let you know which programs and logs can be discarded. Even though you couldn't find this file C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctl32.dll , the entry referencing this file returned after 'fixing' it in HijackThis. I'd like to try to find out more about to be sure it's not going to cause your previous symptoms to resurface. Download WinPFInd http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/oldtimer/WinPFind.zip and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder. Do Not run it yet. Let's see what this online scanner has to say: Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Kaspersky WebScanner You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes. *The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files: *Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT *Now click on Scan Settings *In the scan settings make that the following are selected: *Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: *Standard *Scan Options: *Scan Archives *Scan Mail Bases *Click OK *Now under select a target to scan: *Select My Computer *This will program will start and scan your system. *The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. *Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. *Now click on the Save as Text button: *Save the file to your desktop. *Copy and paste that information in your next post. Reboot into Safe Mode. Inside C:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.! Once the Scan is Complete it will make a txt file (log) of what was found. Save that log and post it here. Restart one more time back into Normal Mode, run a scan with HijackThis and save the log to post here. |

Reboot into Safe Mode.
Click START…RUN…Type in regedit. Make sure just “My Computer” is showing in the left pane and click..FILE….EXPORT…and save a copy some were in case you make a mistake. Now navigate to each of the following keys and delete the file/folder/entry I highlighted in RED HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\msctl32.dll If the above registry key is giving you a problem deleting, right click on it and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor. Run a scan with HijackThis and 'check' the following entry: O20 - Winlogon Notify: msctl32.dll - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctl32.dll (file missing) Delete the following files and folders: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00002.dll C:\DVD making\APPLE_QUiCKTiME_PRO_v7.0.3.50_WiTH_iTUNES_v 6.0.1.3_MULTiLANGUAGE-iNFERNO.rar Search for the following file again via Start>Search and delete it. After you enter the file in the All Files/Folders box, at the bottom, click on 'More Advanced Options' and make sure the first 3 boxes at the bottom are checked: C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctl32.dll Reboot into Normal Mode and post another HijackThis log. C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctl32.dll |

Hi GDIMEW,
Your log is clean. If there aren't any more problems, please continue with these important final steps: Reset hidden/system files and folders Windows XP =============== Click Start. * Open My Computer. * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. * Select the View tab. * Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option. * Select the Hide file extensions for known types option. * Select the Hide protected operating system files option. Click Yes to confirm. Click OK. Enable Windows Auto Update *Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl *Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date" *Under Settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify". Click on "OK". Create a new System Restore point Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter * Select the System Restore Tab * Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply * Then untick the same checkbox & click OK This will prevent any reinfection from any previous restore points. In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles: HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below: Understanding and Using Firewalls More information and downloads are available at the following links: Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. You may remove any of the programs we downloaded for this fix. I would suggest keeping the logs and backups made for at least 1 week in case any problems should arise. After that, feel free to delete them. |
