IE Searching www.www.'domain'.com.com
First time using the site, so here goes ...
Web addresses that I enter into IE6 appear to be corrupted before being processed. For example, when I enter www.google.com in the address bar, I see the following in the lower left corner of the IE window: 'Opening page http://www.www.google.com.com/', then http://www.www.google.com.net/' and finally http://www.www.google.com.edu/, before generating an error 'Internet Explorer could not open the search page'. I am certain of an intact internet connection since I can access the web fine using Windows Explorer, or IE6 in Safe mode with Networking, and can also update anti-virus files in Norton etc. I am running a Sony Vaio desktop on XP SP2, with Norton Internet Security and Microsoft Anti-Spyware (Beta1). I have already tried the following anti-spyware tools, but they are not detecting any problems: - CWShredder - Ad-Aware SE - Ewido Security Suite - Spybot. My Hijackthis log file is pasted in below. What should I try next? Let me know if more descriptive or diagnostic detail is needed to route out the problem. Thanks in advance (I've already spent about 2 days trying to figure this out). Welcome to TSF.
Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad: REGEDIT4 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix] @="http://" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes] "ftp"="ftp://" "gopher"="gopher://" "home"="http://" "mosaic"="http://" "www"="http://" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults] @="" "http"=dword:00000003 "https"=dword:00000003 "ftp"=dword:00000003 "file"=dword:00000003 "@ivt"=dword:00000001 "shell"=dword:00000000 Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards. Run a new HijackThis scan. Check this entry and hit the Fix checked button on the bottom: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE Restart. Any other problems still? If not, then: Your log is clean. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

OK, no luck. I added the registry entries exactly as specified and fixed the ALCMTR.EXE entry in the log. A new log is included below. The corrupted IE searching behaviour persists.
Can I check that the file pathnames in the registry merge information are correct - in that they include ...\Curr entversion\... i.e. 'Currentversion' with a space midway through the text. Is this correct? What would you suggest I try next? Hi AlteredCarbon -
No, those spaces are not supposed to be there....that is something which happens to our board posts. Please ensure that the spaces are not there, and then run the regfix again. We'll proceed from there.

I've corrected the fixes to the registry. Alas, no success. tetonbob's avatar did at least make me smile.
Here's the latest HJT log, any suggestions for what to try next? Download: StartDreck
Unzip to its own folder and start the program: Press 'Config' Press 'Mark All' UN-Check the 'NT-Services & NT-Kernel...' boxes only: Press 'Ok' Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application) Post the log in this thread. Download Silent runners.Vbs http://www.silentrunners.org/ 1. Make sure you have any script blocking software disabled 2. Run the program. It will take a few minutes to complete. 3. Once complete it will produce a log named “StartupPrograms” with Your user and date in the filename. Open that txt file and posts it contents in your next post. Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan ** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner

Thanks MicroBell. A good amount of diagnostic data here so I have posted the logs in the attached zip file. I had to run the Panda ActiveScan in Safe mode to circumvent the reported problem, it came up clean. The output screenprint is included in the zip for confirmation.
Let me know if you need more diagnostics. Thanks again. |

I'm not seeing anything in the logs. Please remove the Google Toolbar from add/remove programs (you can add it back later).
Download my attachment to this thread called Zonefix.zip (My 2nd to last post in that thread) http://www.techsupportforum.com/hija...oad-crazy.html and unzip the reg file inside. Double click on the reg file to merge it into the registry and then reboot. Let me know if your still getting the redirect. Please let me know if this file exsists on your PC.. C:\WINDOWS\system32\bootconf.exe Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan ** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner

Thanks MicroBell, I loaded Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg into registry and rebooted, but the IE redirect is still occurring.
I have checked C:\WINDOWS\system32 for the file you specified - there is no bootconf.exe listed in that directory; nearest I have is a bootok.exe and bootvrfy.exe. Panda scan is still showing as clean. Ideas? |

AlteredCarbon,
Please PING the Google site and see if it works. I don't think this is related to malware but an issue with IE trying to resolve the DNS names. Is this PC networked? Does this issue happen on every web site you enter or just a few?

MicroBell, I think you could be on to something here, thanks for persisting. Take a look at the screenprint from my ping attempts - the addresses actually pinged are not at all as typed at the command prompt. Does this help?
In response to your other questions, the PC is not networked, it is connected to a high speed access point via a Netgear ADSL firewall router. All web addresses I have tried to date have failed in IE (unless running in safe mode). |

AC,
Please open regedit and navigate to this key... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks Highlight the URLSearchHooks folder..right click....and export the key. Save it as a text file and post it here. I need to see what entrys are in that location. Please download my attachment to this thread called urlfix.txt. Right click and rename it urlfix.reg. Double click and allow it to merge into the registry.

Double check those entrys above that "Greyknight" highlighted in Green. I need to know if they are listed as is...or have other entrys in those locations as this will tell me if something is putting them back or they are correct.
Also open IE and RESET it to defaults on the Advanced Tab.

Well..might as well look at the rest.....lol
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings <--highlight the folder and export the whole key. Post it here. Download WinPFInd http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...r/WinPFind.zip and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder. Download Track qoo http://www.geekstogo.com/downloads/Trackqoo.zip Save it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop. Unzip the Track qoo.vbs inside to your desktop. DO NOT run it yet! Reboot into Safe Mode Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.! Inside C:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.! Once the Scan is Complete it will make a txt file (log) of what was found. 1. Go to the WinPFind folder 2. Locate WinPFind.txt 3. Please post those results in your next post! REBOOT to normal mode. Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs" Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless! Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post along with the results of WinPFind! So I need the following tool logs.. WinPFind.txt log Track qoo.vbs log

Well..I'm running low on Ideas....but as the logs are clean and your registry entrys are fine..I'm leaning to an issue that IE6 is corrupt as HJT can't even get your version info from it. Anyway..let's try to register ALL of IE's Dlls...
Copy the following text below in BOLD into wordpad... rem Script used to manually reregister Internet Explorer and Shell related *.dlls rem Also included the Digital Signing and Cryptographic Provider *. dlls if needed rem rundll32.exe advpack.dll /DelNodeRunDLL32 C:\WINNT\System32\dacui.dll rem rundll32.exe advpack.dll /DelNodeRunDLL32 C:\WINNT\Catroot\icatalog.mdb rem regsvr32 setupwbv.dll /s rem regsvr32 wininet.dll /s regsvr32 comcat.dll /s regsvr32 CSSEQCHK.DLL /s regsvr32 shdoc401.dll /s regsvr32 shdoc401.dll /i /s regsvr32 asctrls.ocx /s regsvr32 oleaut32.dll /s regsvr32 shdocvw.dll /I /s regsvr32 shdocvw.dll /s regsvr32 browseui.dll /s regsvr32 browsewm.dll /s regsvr32 browseui.dll /I /s regsvr32 msrating.dll /s regsvr32 mlang.dll /s regsvr32 hlink.dll /s rem regsvr32 mshtml.dll /s regsvr32 mshtmled.dll /s regsvr32 urlmon.dll /s regsvr32 plugin.ocx /s regsvr32 sendmail.dll /s rem regsvr32 comctl32.dll /i /s rem regsvr32 inetcpl.cpl /i /s rem regsvr32 mshtml.dll /i /s regsvr32 scrobj.dll /s regsvr32 mmefxe.ocx /s rem regsvr32 proctexe.ocx mshta.exe /register /s regsvr32 corpol.dll /s regsvr32 jscript.dll /s regsvr32 msxml.dll /s regsvr32 imgutil.dll /s regsvr32 thumbvw.dll /s regsvr32 cryptext.dll /s regsvr32 rsabase.dll /s rem regsvr32 triedit.dll /s rem regsvr32 dhtmled.ocx /s regsvr32 inseng.dll /s regsvr32 iesetup.dll /i /s rem regsvr32 hmmapi.dll /s regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll /s regsvr32 actxprxy.dll /s regsvr32 dispex.dll /s regsvr32 occache.dll /s regsvr32 occache.dll /i /s regsvr32 iepeers.dll /s rem regsvr32 wininet.dll /i /s regsvr32 urlmon.dll /i /s rem regsvr32 digest.dll /i /s regsvr32 cdfview.dll /s regsvr32 webcheck.dll /s regsvr32 mobsync.dll /s regsvr32 pngfilt.dll /s regsvr32 licmgr10.dll /s regsvr32 icmfilter.dll /s regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx /s regsvr32 inetcfg.dll /s rem regsvr32 trialoc.dll /s regsvr32 tdc.ocx /s regsvr32 MSR2C.DLL /s regsvr32 msident.dll /s regsvr32 msieftp.dll /s regsvr32 xmsconf.ocx /s regsvr32 ils.dll /s regsvr32 msoeacct.dll /s rem regsvr32 wab32.dll /s rem regsvr32 wabimp.dll /s rem regsvr32 wabfind.dll /s rem regsvr32 oemiglib.dll /s rem regsvr32 directdb.dll /s regsvr32 inetcomm.dll /s rem regsvr32 msoe.dll /s rem regsvr32 oeimport.dll /s regsvr32 msdxm.ocx /s regsvr32 dxmasf.dll /s rem regsvr32 laprxy.dll /s regsvr32 l3codecx.ax /s regsvr32 acelpdec.ax /s regsvr32 mpg4ds32.ax /s regsvr32 voxmsdec.ax /s regsvr32 danim.dll /s regsvr32 Daxctle.ocx /s regsvr32 lmrt.dll /s regsvr32 datime.dll /s regsvr32 dxtrans.dll /s regsvr32 dxtmsft.dll /s rem regsvr32 vgx.dll /s regsvr32 WEBPOST.DLL /s regsvr32 WPWIZDLL.DLL /s regsvr32 POSTWPP.DLL /s regsvr32 CRSWPP.DLL /s regsvr32 FTPWPP.DLL /s regsvr32 FPWPP.DLL /s rem regsvr32 FLUPL.OCX /s regsvr32 wshom.ocx /s regsvr32 wshext.dll /s regsvr32 vbscript.dll /s regsvr32 scrrun.dll mstinit.exe /setup /s regsvr32 msnsspc.dll /SspcCreateSspiReg /s regsvr32 msapsspc.dll /SspcCreateSspiReg /s regsvr32 licdll.dll /s regsvr32 regwizc.dll /s regsvr32 softpub.dll /s regsvr32 IEDKCS32.DLL /s regsvr32 MSTIME.DLL /s regsvr32 WINTRUST.DLL /s regsvr32 INITPKI.DLL /s regsvr32 DSSENH.DLL /s regsvr32 RSAENH.DLL /s regsvr32 CRYPTDLG.DLL /s regsvr32 Gpkcsp.dll /s regsvr32 Sccbase.dll /s regsvr32 Slbcsp.dll /s exit Now save the file as 'All File Types' and name it fixie.bat. Close down everything including IE and double click to run the batch file. Then reboot the PC. Click start...run...type in sfc /scannow and see if it picks up any corrupt files. Then try to input those sites again. If you still get the same thing...then your likely going to have to reinstall or repair IE6. Here's two sites that will step you through the process.... http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_r...e_and_oe_6.htm http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378
