I have been having problems with Internet Explorer and AIM. They do not respond when opened. The Internet Explorer error says 'hungapp' and the AIM error says 'wininet.dll'. I downloaded a program called PC Rescue that is supposed to dix dll errors but it only fixed the problem temporarily. I ran a scan through Hijack This and here are the results. If someone has any idea which ones are bad, please let me know.

Download, install & launch - Webroot SpySweeper (Trial) (8.3 MB)
When SpySweeper starts, please accept any prompts to update definitions. Exit the program after you have updated.

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later. To do this:

Click My Computer, then C:\
Right click in the right-hand panel.
In the menu that opens, click New>Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder.
Rename it"HJT"

---------------------------

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Launch & use the diagnostic version of SpySweeper & configure it as followed:

• Click on the Start button
• After it has finished scanning, click the Next button
• Allow Spysweeper to reboot your machine to remove the infected files.

## IMPORTANT - do not use your computer as you scan.


Reboot back to Normal Mode

Launch SpySweeper & select Results from the left pane
Click the 'Session Log' tab & choose Save to File to create a log.

Post that in your next reply along with a new HJT log.

I followed your steps but encountered a problem after spy sweeper scanned my computer. It found a lot of threats including a trojan horse, but there was no option for me to click 'next' and allow them to reboot my computer to remove the infected files. Instead, it said that I need to subscribe to spy sweeper in order to remove the files. Is this something I should do or is there another way to remove the files?

In the meantime, let's do this:

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm *Requires Internet Explorer.
Make sure you click the "Free Online Virus Scan" in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan.

1. Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
2. Click On 'Scan Now'
3. Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
4. Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
   * You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
5. If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
6. Then click Save report
7. Post the contents of the report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

To answer your question, no I never used the trial version of spy sweeper. I just ran the scan that you told me to and about halfway through a blue screen came up on my computer saying that windows detected a problem and had to shut down to prevent harm to my computer. Before this happened, the scan had detected 2 viruses and 13 spyware files. The error on the blue screen said Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error. I don't know if that means anything. I restarted my computer and ran another Hijack This scan. Here is the log. Thanks for your help...I don't know why nothing is working :(

Did you follow the HijackThis fixes posted by Ried earlier? According to your HijackThis log you posted here, you didn't run those fixes yet. Please confirm...or redo those steps.

See if this can repair the dll problem:
Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD.

I have tried all the steps that Ried told me to but I encountered a problem every time. The spy sweeper scan said I had to subscribe to them so Ried gave me another scan to do but that one made my computer shut off. I just did what you told me to do to fix the dll problem but nothing happened.

Let's just start over and take this one step at a time.

Don't worry about Webroot or the online Panda scan right now, let's concentrate on the following instructions and we'll take it from there.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this.

Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below.

If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later. To do this:

Click My Computer, then C:\
Right click in the right-hand panel.
In the menu that opens, click New>Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder.
Rename it"HJT"

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:

-Delete Newsgroup cache
-Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
-Scan local drives for temporary files
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
Note: [b][color=teal][size=1]CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!

Reboot back to Normal Mode. Run another scan with HijackThis and post the log here.

Hello,

You still haven't moved HijackThis out of the Temporary Files. We really need to move it to a more permanent place. Click on HijackThis to highlight it--do not double click and open, just highlight it and in the left pane, you will see 'File and Folder Tasks'. Select 'Move this file' and another dialog box will open. Click My Computer, then click C: . Now, right click in an open spot and create new folder--name it HJT--and press Enter. Double click the newly created HJT folder and click OK.

Open HijackThis
*Click on the "Configure" button on the bottom right
*Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
*Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
*Click on the button "Save list"

I am confused...I did make a HJT folder under C:\\ but now it's not there. I redownloaded it and tried to move it like you said but I keep getting an error message that said Hijack This was deleted during the cleanup. But I still have it saved under My Documents along with my saved logs. My computer won't open it though because it said it was deleted. I hope that made sense to you :) On a side note, McAfee just told me that they found a worm virus and cleaned it but it hasn't said anything about the 2 trojan horses that the other scans found. Not sure if that is relevant or not. I will continue to try to move HiJack this until I hear back from you. Thanks for all your help.

Apparently, McAfee found a worm virus in HiJack This which I guess is why my computer won't open it. McAfee said they deleted the file. I really do follow your instructions exactly as you say but somehow, things still get messed up somewhere.

You will need to re-download HijackThis, let's do this the easy way:

HiJackThis_sfx.exe
1. Delete your current HiJackThis.exe file
2. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
3. Click on the "Unzip" button to install the newer version.
4. It will by default install to the directory - C:\PROGRAM FILES\HIJACKTHIS

Please continue with my previous instructions.

You are going to be so frustrated with me...I don't see the unzipped option anywhere. My computer won't even let me open the file anyway because of the virus it found. This wasn't happening earlier...I haven't had any problems with Hijack This before. I'm afraid I am doing something wrong but I don't know what.

Ok ren, not to worry, I'll try to get you through this. Please do not be offended by any questions I may ask, it's just that I need to understand exactly what you're doing on your end.

After you downloaded the hijackthis_sfx.exe...did you double-click it? Click 'Run' and it should popup the WinZip Self Extractor which will then have the 'Unzip' button.

When I double-click on the file, an error message comes up that says I may not have access to the file. Then, a McAfee popup comes up in the bottom right hand corner of the screen that says the worm was found, cleaned, and the file was deleted. Then, another error message comes up that says something about how the file can't be opened and asks whether I want to scan all my files. I click no. Where do I click 'run'? I don't see that, either.

I just realized that the file I downloaded doesn't have the sfx part in it's name...it's just hijackthis.exe. I don't know if that makes a difference

Delete any of your downloads for HijackThis and re download from that latest link I gave you.

Sometimes McAfee detects HijackThis as a virus...disable McAfee, then double click the download, etc...

Ok...it is downloaded and unzipped. I saved it in My Documents...I'm not sure if it by default saved itself in my program files. I'm not sure what to do next.
