XP Freezes Each Night at Same Time!
Hi,
At 2:24 am each night, my computer freezes. I have tried to look in my Event Viewer but cannot see anything that sticks out. I was hoping that you folks might be able to help. I have been using HJT, AdAware, Microsoft AntiSpyware, NAV and Spybot but to no avail. Here is my HJT log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 12:14:08 PM, on 11/19/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\SMax4PNP.exe C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\smax4.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Logitech\MOUSEW~1\SYSTEM\EM_EXEC.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\iTouch\iTouch.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\program files\TheWeatherNetwork\WeatherEye\WeatherEye.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe C:\Palm\HOTSYNC.EXE C:\Program Files\Vianet Internet Solutions\Vianet DSL\app\EnterNet.exe C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.40607\aspnet_admin.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\VIANET~1\VIANET~1\app\pppoeservice.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ScsiAccess.EXE C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\SMAgent.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Internet\HJT\HijackThis.exe R0 - Hello TheFloydSW and welcome to TSF,
How long ago did this problem start? I'm not seeing anything in the log, plese do the following: Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: *Click "Options..." *Move the arrow down to "Standard CleanUp!" *Uncheck the following: -Delete Newsgroup cache -Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions -Scan local drives for temporary files Click OK Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted. Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm *Requires Internet Explorer. Make sure you click the "Free Online Virus Scan" in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan.
Make sure you have time to run the scan before your 2:24 am computer freeze.

Hi Red;
Thanks for checking into my problem. The freezing has been present for about a week. The "KernelFaultCheck" that comes up in the HJT log looks suspicious... Any ideas? Here is the updated HJT log and the Activescan log. Thanks again! Hi,
The Kernel Fault Check is Windows way of telling you some sort of error occurred. Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. (it's important that you get version v2.0.0.175) Reboot into Safe Mode.(tapping F8 or F5) Start KillBox. Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Ctrl-C: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sysfile.dll C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\initial.inf C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall6_98.exe Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard Click on the dropdown menu next to Full Path of File to Delete field. *Verify that the filenames you pasted are found there Select/tick the following: * Delete on Reboot * End Explorer Shell While Killing File * Unregister.dll Before Deleting" if it's not grayed out. Click the RED X button. Click [Yes] at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt. Click [YES] at the Pending Operations prompt. Reboot into Normal Mode. If your computer is still 'freezing' at 2:24am, please do the following: Right click on http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (ex: Ad-Watch, TeaTimer, Norton, etc.). Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. This will take a few minutes. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post. Download StartDreck http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/StartDreck.zip Unzip to its own folder and start the program: Press 'Config' Press 'mark all' Uncheck the following boxes only: System/Running Process -> List Modules System/Drivers -> NT Services System/Drivers -> NT Kernel- and FS-drivers Press 'OK' Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application) Post the log in this thread. |

That's good to hear.
Here are some important final instructions for you:Reset hidden/system files and folders Windows XP =============== Click Start. * Open My Computer. * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. * Select the View tab. * Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option. * Select the Hide file extensions for known types option. * Select the Hide protected operating system files option. Click Yes to confirm. Click OK. Enable Windows Auto Update *Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl *Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date" *Under Settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify". Click on "OK". Create a new System Restore point Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter * Select the System Restore Tab * Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply * Then untick the same checkbox & click OK This will prevent any reinfection from any previous restore points. In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles: HOW DID I GET INFECTED IN THE FIRST PLACE? by Tony Klein THE ANTI-SPYWARE TUTORIAL MAKING INTERNET EXPLORER SAFER Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below: Understanding and Using Firewalls More information and downloads are available at the following links: Spyware Blaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. |
