Question Winfixer, Virtumundo, maybe more

Hello Tech Support Forum Folks,

I'm getting popups and redirects via winfixer (I think it even clicks 'work offline' on the File toolbar). At times my entire desktop disappears including the START button and that whole bottom bar but leaving any open windows.

I am using WinXP sp2 up to date.

I have SpyBot S&D with TeaTimer, Spyware Blaster, Ad Aware SE personal, AVG Free, CounterSpy, Install Watch and M$ firewall enabled and running at all times.

I used CW shredder, VX2, House Call, and CA web scan to remove and/or quarantine any malware.

I ran HJT and KRC HJT Analyzer. I am posting the Result.txt file from KRC Analyzer.

I hope you can give me some help getting rid of this scum/mal-ware.

TIA,
loufurr

TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware but it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
  • Choose Yes at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the Tools menu.
  • Click Resident.
  • Uncheck the Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active. box.
  • In the File menu click Exit to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop. Double-click on it to extract the files to a new folder on your desktop.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
Restart your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
At the introductory screen, press <Enter> to proceed.
When asked to type in a filepath, please key this in:
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsp.dll

Press Enter to continue with the fix.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Next you will be asked to type in a second filepath.
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\pstwa.* < - the asterix * is part of the filepath

Press Enter to continue with the fix.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The fix should then automatically launch HijackThis. (if it doesn't, you'll have to do it manually)
In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
  • O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B313D637-F405-4052-AC37-E2119AB3C8F8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsp.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtsp - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsp.dll
After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and reboot your computer.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Then, perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click Scan Now
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

So far...

Thanks for the guidance sUBs.

All has not gone well. I turned off TeaTimer, already had VundoFix on my desktop.

When I entered Safe Mode I tried to login as Administrator although I have never used it before. When the desktop came up it only showed four items, no HJT or VundoFix, so I rebooted to SafeMode and logged in as Owner. I ran VundoFix, it launched HJT and I clicked on 'just start Program' then 'scan'.
An item you asked me to check, the [b]02-BHO:MSEvents Object, was not shown in the scan file (but it is clearly shown in the attached HJT results log). I checked the other two and clicked 'Fix Checked'.

I downloaded and ran CleanUp which freed up 87.8mb!

I ran Panda's ActiveScan which found one item: Virtumonde, which it did NOT remove.

When I tried to enter Safe Mode again to run HJT for a new log I got this message: "Windows could not start in Safe Mode because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file."

Hopefully you can tell me how to replace the missing file and what next?

loufurr

Please try rebooting into S/Mode again.

If Hal.dll was truly missing, you would not be able to boot into Normal Mode at all. Kindly let me know how that went

OK, when I start in Safe Mode I am offered a choice of 'Windows(default)' or 'WinXP'. If I choose 'WinXP' I get the message about missing dll. If I choose 'Windows(default)'... Safe Mode starts.

When I choose to run as 'Administrator' There are only four programs on the desktop. If I run as 'Owner' the desktop shows all the usual programs.

Thanks for helping me.

loufurr,

Hal.dll cannot be missing. Otherwise, you will not be able to boot into Normal Mode as well.

I'm inclined to believe that the infection is playing havoc with your machine.

Please post a new HJT log.

latest HJT logs

Hi sUBs,

FWIW, I ran all my malware preventing software about two hours ago (AVG, SpyBot S&D, AD-Aware, Spyware Blaster and CounterSpy) and none of them found any problems.

Here are my HJT logs, first one plain, second one analyzed. Thanks.

Fix these with HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowWnd] ShowWnd.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtsp - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsp.dll (file missing)

Then, do a search & delete this file:

ShowWnd.exe (it should be located at c:\windows\system32)

If you should experience difficulties removing it, reboot & try deleting it again.

Post a new HJT log after you have done so. Also let me know if you still face the same problem with s/mode.

Thumbs Up Progress

I fixed with HJT the two files you listed while in Safe Mode.

I searched (still in S/mode) for ShowWnd.exe and did NOT find it.

Restarted in Normal Mode, unhid system files, Searched System Folders, Hidden files and folders and sub-folders.

I found:
ShowWnd.zip C\Documents and Settings\all users\application data\Spybot-Search&Destroy\recovery
and:
ShowWnd.exe C\Documents and Settings\all users\application data\Spybot-Search&Destroy\recovery\ShowWin.zip

I did NOT delete them since I didn't find them in C:\windows\system32.

In regard to problems with Safe Mode, yes, the same behavior I reported earlier is still happening. I found this discussion:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm
Which made me wonder if my computer thinks it is set up to dual boot since it offers me the choice between WinXP and Windows(default). Oddly though, it only boots to safe mode if I choose Windows(default).

Thanks for the continued help.

Here are the logs:

You weren't able to find ShowWnd.exe bcos SpyBot has taken care of it at an earlier date. That's why it was found in Spybot's recovery folder. There's no reason why you should wanna have Spybot keep a backup copy of this file. Please delete it.

Launch Spybot & click on the "Recovery" button
Select all the items in the right pane & select - "Purge"

Then click on the Start button & select Run. Type this inthe box & click Ok - c:\boot.ini
Notepad should open with some text in it.
Copy/paste it into your next reply

maybe almost home free

Purged the three items in SpyBot S&D.

Here's the boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Go to the root of Drive C & locate - boot.ini

Right click on it & select Properties - uncheck 'read only' & click OK

Then create a copy/backup & save it as - C:\boot.ini.bak

Open the original boot.ini with notepad

Edit this line :

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

... to

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT

close Notepad & save changes.

Try rebooting into Safe Mode now.

Let me know how that went

PS..if you see smoke coming out of your machine, call 911

went badly

Hi sUBs,

I made the changes...rebooted to Safe Mode...no O/S choices offered...clicked 'Windows XP Home'...got this message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32.hal.dll
please reinstall a copy of the above file.

Now the computer will not boot at all. But no smoke.

So, what now?

Do you have your installation cd? Dont worry, I'm not gonna ask you to reformat

Alternately, can you tell me if your file system is FAT32 or NTFS.

I have a OEM restore DVD and the file system is NTFS.

Can't help but worry.

Additional questions:
  1. Do you have a floppy disk?
  2. Do you have Windows XP Home or Professional?

On the computer which you're currently on...

Please download & install - NTFS4dOS

After it has finished installing it will prompt you for an empty floppy disk.
Insert one & select the 'Format' button
Choose - Create an MS-Dos Startup Disk & click Start
After that is done, click 'Close' to return to the previous Window
Click the Next button twice till you get to the part where it says 'Create Floppy'
Create a new Floppy & leave the floppy in the drive

Download the file I've attached to this post - boot.zip
It contains 2 files:
  • boot.ini
  • sUBs.bat
Extract/unzip the files into the floppy

Please report back when you have completed the above

Please print out the following instructions

Insert the Floppy into the troubled computer's floppy drive
Configure the computer to boot from Floppy (let me if you dont know how to do this)

Boot the computer & you shall be presented with the following screens

In the first screen, you will have to answer "1" < Press Enter >

In the second screen, you will have to answer "Yes" < Press Enter >

At the command prompt (A:\>), type this - sUBs.bat < Press Enter >

You will receive the following reply:

Quote:
1 file(s) copied

+++ DONE +++
Press Any Key to continue ...
Remove the floppy disk & reboot normally
