Please Help - trojan.vundo.c HJT log

Please help, NAV reports trojan.vundo.c virus infection on Dell (intel) running XP Windows Media Edition 2005 computer. Symantec site has no information on new "c" strain, phone support says that they are "working on it" and a fix will be posted in 24 to 48 hours, or call back since I have no internet access with my cable modem.

I have no internet access and other odd things including some trouble in Safe Mode trying to run the Ad-aware SE and vundo fix files, etc. Finally got access at work and downloaded HJT and anti-spyware software. Thanks in advance for any help. Here is the log information:

I've moved this to the top hoping that someone can help restore my internet access before I have to leave work in a few minutes.

After trying to remove trojan.vundo.c as identified by NAV and Microsoft Anti-Spy, NAV reports unable to remove or repair and no fix on their site. I tried to follow the steps outlined here, but with limited success and not having internet access from home (infected) computer makes it harder.

Sorry, meant to move my prior post to the top, not make new thread!! I'm new at this in case you can't tell and am getting frustrated since my home computer has been infected with no internet access since Saturday. Phone support at Symantec and Dell have no clue and say that there is no fix for trojan.vundo.c as of today, just for vundo.b which is not as serious (or difficult) as this new one. I have to leave work now and will have to check back later if I can get computer cleaned enough to connect. Thanks in advance for any help.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please make sure system restore is enabled by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn OFF System Restore and make sure it’s NOT checked. We want system restore ON and monitoring your current hard drive. Once your clean we will turn this off and then back on to remove the infection from the restore folder and create a clean restore point.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Please use another computer to download the following programs to a CD to bring to this infected PC.

Please download and install the trial version of Webroot SpySweeper (8.3MB) . When SpySweeper starts, please accept any prompts to update definitions.

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration: * CleanUp! will not create any backups!!

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:

Delete Newsgroup cache

Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions

Scan local drives for temporary files

4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot when prompted into Safe Mode:

*After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
*Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
*Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Close HijackThis.

Delete the following file if it still exists:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll

Launch & use the diagnostic version of SpySweeper & configure it as followed:

Click on the Start button
After it has finished scanning, click the Next button
Allow Spysweeper to reboot your machine to remove the infected files.

Launch SpySweeper & select Results from the left pane
Click the 'Session Log' tab & choose Save to File to create a log.
## IMPORTANT - do not use your computer as you scan.

Reboot into Normal Mode.

If you have internet access, please do the following:

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm *Requires Internet Explorer.
Make sure you click the "Free Online Virus Scan" in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan.

Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
Click On 'Scan Now'
Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
Then click Save report
Post the contents of the report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

OK, I will download and copy files to CD and copy text of instructions to take home and use on infected computer tonight. I tried running some of the programs such as Ad-aware SE, etc per some of the similar posts and think that I got rid of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll file. NAV (and other programs) no longer report trojan.vundo.c as being found.

However, I still do 'NOT' have access to the internet, but this may be do to some settings that the virus/spyware made to the system? Foxfire reports a "Connection Error" no matter what address is typed and IE seems to be missing completely for some strange reason and I may need to reinstall it, even though I rarely use it at home.

I'll report back tomorrow with my results. Thank you.

These logs appear clean, how is your system running? If there are no more problems, please continue with these final instructions:

Reset hidden/system files and folders
Windows XP
===============
Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
* Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
* Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Enable Windows Auto Update
*Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
*Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
*Under Settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

Create a new System Restore point

Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
* Select the System Restore Tab
* Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
Click Apply
* Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
This will prevent any reinfection from any previous restore points.

Be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Please make sure system restore is enabled by *right clicking* on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn OFF System Restore and make sure it’s NOT checked. We want system restore ON and monitoring your current hard drive. Once your clean we will turn this off and then back on to remove the infection from the restore folder and create a clean restore point. Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading: * select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. --------------------------- Please use another computer to download the following programs to a CD to bring to this infected PC. Please download and install the trial version of Webroot SpySweeper (8.3MB) . When SpySweeper starts, please accept any prompts to update definitions. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. --------------------------- Run Cleanup! using the following configuration: * CleanUp! will not create any backups!! 1. Click Options... 2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp! 3. Uncheck the following: Delete Newsgroup cache Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions Scan local drives for temporary files 4. Click OK 5. Launch SpySweeper & select Results from the left pane Click the 'Session Log' tab & choose Save to File to create a log. ## IMPORTANT - do not use your computer as you scan. Reboot into Normal Mode. If you have internet access, please do the following: Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm Requires Internet Explorer. If there are no more problems, please continue with these final instructions: Reset hidden/system files and folders Windows XP =============== Click Start. * Open My Computer. * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. * Select the View tab. * Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option. * Select the Hide file extensions for known types option. * Select the Hide protected operating system files option. Click Yes to confirm. Click OK. Enable Windows Auto Update Go to Start>Run* - type wuaucpl.cpl Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date" Under *Settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify". Click on "OK". Create a new System Restore point* Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter * Select the System Restore Tab * Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives" Click Apply * Then untick the same checkbox & click OK This will prevent any reinfection from any previous restore points. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Spyware Guard to catch and block spyware before it can execute. IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Update all these programs regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. I'm new at this in case you can't tell and am getting frustrated since my home computer has been infected with no internet access since Saturday. Phone support at Symantec and Dell have no clue and say that there is no fix for trojan.vundo.c as of today, just for vundo.b which is not as serious (or difficult) as this new one. I have to leave work now and will have to check back later if I can get computer cleaned enough to connect. Thanks in advance for any help.

Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: chicagoland Posts: 36 OS: XP (Media Center 2005)	OK, I will download and copy files to CD and copy text of instructions to take home and use on infected computer tonight. I tried running some of the programs such as Ad-aware SE, etc per some of the similar posts and think that I got rid of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll file. NAV (and other programs) no longer report trojan.vundo.c as being found. However, I still do 'NOT' have access to the internet, but this may be do to some settings that the virus/spyware made to the system? Foxfire reports a "Connection Error" no matter what address is typed and IE seems to be missing completely for some strange reason and I may need to reinstall it, even though I rarely use it at home. I'll report back tomorrow with my results. Thank you.
