malicious & tracking cookies+threats from known bad sites

Everytime i run spyware doctor and adaware se, they pick up on malicious and tracking cookies and known bad sites that i keep removing but different ones keep returning. Is there anything i can remove to stop these

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.


Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Note: There is no need to purchase Ewido. It will remain as the freeware version after the trial period, which means the guard process will no longer work, but the scanner will be just as effective.


Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {702EA91C-1ACF-4772-8078-18F2B2EE1031} - (no file)

Reboot in normal mode now.

Download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).

• Choose Save, NOT run, and save to your desktop
• Double-click the tmas-web-scan.exe icon
• It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
• Click "Start Scan"

After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"

• Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
• Click Exit.

Reboot your computer. I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system.

In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.


Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here, along with the scan results from Ewido, and the Antispyware.log.

There was still a cookie left when i ran this second scan. I deleted it then sent this. Hope i have done it right

Let's make sure nothing is still installed that shouldn't be.

Create a uninstall list:

• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the configure button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Click on the Box that says "Open Uninstall Manager"
• Click on the button "Save list"
• Copy and past the List from the notebook onto your post

Take advantage of this information. I'll have further instructions when I'm sure you are clean.

1. SECURING INTERNET EXPLORER
   From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
   • Select the Security tab
     • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
     • Select Custom Level .
       • Change 'Download signed ActiveX controls' to Prompt
       • Change 'Download unsigned ActiveX controls' to Disable
       • Change 'Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe' to Disable
       • Change 'Installation of desktop items' to Prompt
       • Change 'Launching programs and files in an IFRAME' to Prompt
       • Change 'Navigate sub-frames across different domains' to Prompt
       • When all these changes have been made, click on the OK button.
     • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
   • Select OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
   
   
   
2. ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
   It is very important that you have anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

   It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
   
   
   
3. FIREWALL
   Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here.
   
   
   
4. Microsoft Windows Update
   Visit windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
   
   
   
5. SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY
   Download and install Spybot - Search & Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
   
   
   
6. AD-AWARE
   Download and install Ad-Aware. You should use this program to scan your computer on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
   
   
   
7. SPYWAREBLASTER
   SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of malicious ActiveX, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software. Blocks spyware/tracking cookies & restricts the actions of potentially unwanted sites.
   
   Unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here
   
   
   
8. IE-SPYAD
   IE/Spyad places more than 4000 dubious websites and domains in the IE Restricted list. This severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites. A tutorial on installing this product can be found here
   
   
   
9. MVPS HOST FILE
   The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites form serving you unsolicited advertisements. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is the IP of your local computer. It can be downloaded here - MVPS Hosts file

Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.

• Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  
  
• Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.
  
  
• Firefox - Use this alternate browser. Whilst Internet Explorer is not a bad browser, almost every exploit crafted is targeted to take advantage of an IE weakness.
  
  
• Sun's Java - It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.
  
  
• Google Toolbar - Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  
  
• CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  
  
• Winpatrol - Download and install the free version of Winpatrol.

After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay.

Adaware keeps picking up something called tribalfusion every second or third scan.

Have you applied all the tools I gave you? A hosts file will block tribal fusion. SpywareBlaster will prevent malicious ActiveX. Winpatrol will also assist in keeping these things out.

You need multiple layers of protection. Prevention & scanning.

I have downloaded all 3 of the above. Not sure if i have done the hosts download right though. I open it with internet explorer and it gives a list of differents things. Do i need to do any more to it?
I am still getting tribalfusion and unknown bad sites in adaware scans and spyware doctor.
I went through the process again of starting in safe mode and running ewido which removed tribalfusion and another temp file, but it keeps getting back in

The tribalfusion cookie actually comes from visting this site. I have never had any problems with ads related to it so it does not seem to be a big deal.

As VR said...it is likely from here, and not malicious. My hosts file and other protection programs prevent these cookies from being installed. I use Firefox as my browser, which has better cookie control than IE. I get no ads on this site, either, due to this protection.

To put the host file in place, you need to do this:

Host.zip
Extract the file & overwrite the existing copy located at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\host

I extracted the file and it went through wizard which stored it in temp files. Should i store it in driver? Also i have installed firefox. Can i now uninstall IE?

You needed to tell the wizard to unzip it to that location. You can still do that with the zip file. When the wizard opens, and asks for the location, copy and paste, or type, the location I've given in my previous post. If it's not in that location, it will do nothing.

Don't uninstall IE. It's an integral part of Windows Xp. Just don't use it. You still need IE for Windows Updates and some online scans if ever the need arises.
