Virtumonde trojan
I use AVG Free, Winpatrol, Ewido Security Suite, Spyblaster, Spybot, Adaware, CCleaner, Windows XP Prefetch Clean & Control, Killbox, several of the online virus scan programs and Windows Firewall. Originally Winpatrol clued me in to a problem with fontdvd.dll and pmnll.dll files trying to take over. Additionally I was getting a popup message that "a change has been detected in your INternet "Hosts" file". After looking at another bulletin board, I installed several of the above programs and Ewido finds Virtumonde in the two .dll files noted above but it doesn't actually remove it and Killbox won't kill it. I've followed advice from the other board but to no avail. As an aside, I have had trouble in the past booting in to safe mode - just get the black screen and the desk top never pops up although when I tried it yesterday with network access (or whatever it's called), I had no trouble.
Currently I have my system restore point turned off. All hidden files can be viewed as recommended in your "read this before posting a HJT log" post. Here is my HJT log using HJKTHIS ANALYZER. Log was analyzed using KRC HijackThis Analyzer - Updated on 9/28/05 Get updates at http://www.greyknight17.com/download.htm#programs ***Security Programs Detected*** O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_EMC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe O23 - Service: AVG7 Alert Manager Server (Avg7Alrt) - GRISOFT, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe O23 - Service: AVG7 Update Service (Avg7UpdSvc) - GRISOFT, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 5:18:40 PM, on 10/15/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\Program Files\Hijack This\hijackthis[1].exe O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Hello fish.. I'm Cat
Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop. Double-click on it to extract the files to a new folder on your desktop. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. Restart your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter. Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat At the introductory screen, press <Enter> to proceed. When asked to type in a filepath, please key this in:
Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Next you will be asked to type in a second filepath. At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The fix should then automatically launch HijackThis. (if it doesn't, you'll have to do it manually) In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * After rebooting, continue with the instructions below. Download and install CleanUp! Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: Click "Options..." Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!" Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Then, perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Wow, Cat, you were quick to respond to my problem...thanks! My Safe Mode only works if I choose Safe Mode with Networking (which makes me suspicious but I know so little I don't know if that's unfounded or not).
When I entered the second command in Killvundo.bat (c:\windows\repair\dvdtnof.*), I got a Windows Script Host pop up window indicating an error "system can't find the file specified". I hit OK and got a blue screen with the following information--- Stop: C000021a {fatal system error} the windows logon process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0X00000001 (0X00000000 0X00000000). the system has been shut down. I think I just pressed enter and got back to my desktop where I manually started HJT. When I did another system scan, the 02-BHO line was not there but I did check and fix the other 3 items, although both the 020's said the files were missing. Pressing any key to reboot did not work nor did I get a blue screen so I restarted in the usual way. Clean up got rid of quite a few files but Panda ActiveScan found nothing so no report there. Here's the new HJT log and the vundofix.txt file. There goes me lunch
The fish swims away.. bcos she's clean Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats. It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay. Have a safe & happy computing day.

One last Q
That's wonderful news that I'm clean (even though you missed your dinner!). Thanks a million for your help.
I noticed when I got on just a bit ago that on my husband's desk top he had that stupid Winpatrol message about a host file change. What's up with that and how in the heck do you get rid of that once & for all? fish |

Sometimes even legit programs try to write to the host file. It's a bit invasive & not advisable. Best that you start a new thread & post the HJT log for that machine there.
