A couple of days ago I received a message from Norton antivirus saying that a virus has been detected. Virus name is trojan.vundo. The object name is C:\WINDOWS\msagent\chars\imgabr.dll. Norton could not remove the virus because "access to the file was denied". Downloaded fixvundo from symantec website and it could not find the virus on my computer. Ran Trojan Hunter and did not find the virus as well! Any advice?

Hello and Welcome to TSF
Download HiJackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. 1. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. 2. Click on the "Unzip" button to install the newer version. 3. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\HiJackThis\ 4. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose - Do a system scan and save a logfile. 5. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on Save log. 6. Post the HiJackThis.log file here. Make sure to include the System information at the top of the log. Once you've done this, an analyst will be along to have a look at your log. |

It appears that the tool managed to fix Vundo.
Let's fix the other entries in your log. Uninstall the following programs, if present, using Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs:
With HiJackThis & place a check next to these items and select "Fix checked": R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell4me.com/myway R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWAS5LP_0001_0811] "C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer Markley\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\SHI3C1YZ\WAS5Scan[1].exe" O20 - Winlogon Notify: imgabr - C:\WINDOWS\msagent\chars\imgabr.dll (file missing) Locate & delete this folder - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\ Go to Start> Run - type cleanmgr (this starts Windows DiskCleanup)

Ok, for some reason I had a bunch of problems! After I read your message I ran HJT again so I could check and fix the things you told me to. There were three that did not show up on HJT so I could not "fix" them. The following were ones that I could not find:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll After I clicked on "fix checked" for the four I could find, a message popped up: "Unexpected error occured! Error number 52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(exe".exe) Please send a error report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing and what version of windows you have. This message has been copied to your clipboard." Then, when I tried to "Locate & delete this folder - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\" I received a message that says: "Cannot delete deSrcAs.dll: access denied Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use" Finally, for some reason, my computer will not download Panda, I enter my email and click ok on the toolbar for the ActiveX software to download but it never does!! What should I do? Here is another HJT from after I "fixed" four of the seven files you listed. Please download KillBox v2.0.0.175.exe (it's important that you get version v2.0.0.175)
Launch KillBox.exe & select the following options:
* Click the RED X button. * Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. * Click Yes at the 'Pending Operations prompt'. Quote:
Since Panda seems to be unavailable, let's try Kaspersky WebScanner Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

I killboxed what you said but I when I tried to HJT for:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWAS5LP_0001_0811] "C:\Documents and Settings\Jennifer Markley\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\SHI3C1YZ\WAS5Scan[1].exe" I received the same error message: "Unexpected error occured! Error number 52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(exe".exe) Please send a error report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing and what version of windows you have. This message has been copied to your clipboard." I am going to try Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner now. |

Please allow Kaspersky to finish the scan first.
We can do the other one later. It only requires a little time to get that log which it produces.

I have attached a file to this post - regdel.txt
Download it & rename it "regdel.REG" (inclusive of the quotes) Make sure you do not mistakenly rename it as regdel.reg.txt (double extensions) Double-click on it & answer YES when prompted to merge into the Registry Start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools> Delete a file on reboot...
