Apropos Media
I have apropos media on my notebook (toshiba satellite M45-S331). I have quite a bit of pop ups so I believe this is associated with the
AproposeMedia (People on Page) Spyware/Adware http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/p...x?id=453077888 I am uncertain if this is related but I have experienced a microsoft visual C++ runtime error. A mysterious folder appears in my program files only after I open the browser. It is C:\PROGRAM FILES\Yahffice The files contained in the folder are: Cache folder AI_04-10-2005 text file AI_06-10-2005 text file ace.dll atl.dll WinGenerics.dll an internet explorer logo with "sddupapi" When I try to shutdown I get several error messages for SDDUPAPI.exe: DLL Initializtion failed and LEGTVIEW.exe:DLL Initialization failed I think I may have got rid of the SDDUPAPI.exe and LEGTVIEW.exe as I now get when trying to log off DFSSRVC.exe:DLL Initialization failed and WMETOXCI.exe:DLL Initialization failed I have run Norton Antivirus, Adaware Se, Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Stinger, Spyware Doctor, Trendmicro Housecall, Hijack this and the HijackThisAnalyzer. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ==================================================================== Log was analyzed using KRC HijackThis Analyzer - You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.
Please download AproposFix from here: http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet. Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following: 1) Restart your computer 2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8. 3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear 4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts. When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Have HijackThis fix these:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/4...02/cpbrkpie.cab Locate & delete this file - C:\WINDOWS\about.htm Go to Start> Run - type cleanmgr (this starts Windows DiskCleanup)
Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report. *Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Hello,
I had HijackThis fix these: R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} (cpbrkpie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/4...02/cpbrkpie.cab I was unable to locate & delete this file - C:\WINDOWS\about.htm I ran the Windows DiskCleanup and deleted: Select the following options: Temporary Internet Files Recycle Bin Temporary Files Click the 'OK' button However, I was unable to perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan as it was giving the error message: An error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try againPossible causes of this error are: Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded. Problems with the Internet connection. The error could be due to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, privileges etc.,... I did not have live updates or auto protect enabled on my antivirus or antispyware programs. I restrated the computer as instructed by panda activesan and rec'd same message. Then I went into the security and advanced tabs in internet options to see if I may change options for activex controls, however, I was unsuccessful and rec'd the same error. Anyhow, here is the new log: ==================================================================== Log was analyzed using KRC HijackThis Analyzer - Updated on 9/28/05 Get updates at http://www.greyknight17.com/download.htm#programs ***Security Programs Detected*** C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe O2 - BHO: PCTools Site Guard - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYWAR~1\tools\iesdsg.dll O2 - BHO: PCTools Browser Monitor - {B56A7D7D-6927-48C8-A975-17DF180C71AC} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYWAR~1\tools\iesdpb.dll O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gcasServ] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" O9 - Extra button: Spyware Doctor - {2D663D1A-8670-49D9-A1A5-4C56B4E14E84} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYWAR~1\tools\iesdpb.dll O23 - Service: Symantec Event Manager (ccEvtMgr) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe O23 - Service: Symantec Password Validation (ccPwdSvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccPwdSvc.exe O23 - Service: Symantec Settings Manager (ccSetMgr) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Service (navapsvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe O23 - Service: Norton AntiVirus Firewall Monitor Service (NPFMntor) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe O23 - Service: SAVScan - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\SAVScan.exe O23 - Service: ScriptBlocking Service (SBService) - Symantec Corporation - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYMANT~1\SCRIPT~1\SBServ.exe O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe O23 - Service: Symantec SPBBCSvc (SPBBCSvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 6:36:48 PM, on 10/15/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\OProtSvc.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Applet\TAPPSRV.exe C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Toshiba Applet\thotkey.exe C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Tvs\TvsTray.exe C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EOUWiz.exe C:\Program Files\Adelphia HSAgent\bin\tgcmd.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe C:\hjt\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.adelphia.net/ R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.adelphia.net/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.toshibadirect.com/dpdstart R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost O2 - BHO: AcroIEToolbarHelper Class - {AE7CD045-E861-484f-8273-0445EE161910} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dll O3 - Toolbar: Adobe PDF - {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Tvs] C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Tvs\TvsTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMAX] C:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\Smax4.exe /tray O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelWireless] C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\ifrmewrk.exe /tf Intel PROSet/Wireless O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EOUApp] C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EOUWiz.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] "c:\Program Files\Adelphia HSAgent\bin\tgcmd.exe" /server /startmonitor /deaf O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Notebook Maximizer] C:\Program Files\Notebook Maximizer\maximizer_startup.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe /Consumer O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] \Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Quick Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\ONENOTEM.EXE O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher.lnk = ? Since we had no luck with Panda, let's try Kaspersky WebScanner
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Please empty Norton's Quarantine folder.
Please clear your System Restore Points by doing the following: To turn off System Restore,Click Start > right-click My Computer and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab > Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this. Click OK. Reboot your System. Now create a new Restore Point: To turn on System Restore,Click Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. How is your system running now, please?

Your system is clean. Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Update all these programs regularly. Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Here are some additional utilities that will further enhance your safety.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein After doing all these, your system will be optimised against future threats. It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay. Have a safe & happy computing day. ![]() Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
