Hello all. First off, I'm going to tell you I am not a huge computer guru, and may require a little more patience than some.
Here's a couple of important PC specs you may need to know:
Windows 98se
Internet Explorer 6.0
Pentium 3
Norton Internet Security 2005

Everytime I scan my PC, I have an infected file called (winacpi.dll). When I click on "more info", it shows it as being called Trojan.Repsamo. After scanning my PC using my NIS 2005 program , I tried to automatically Repair it, but that was unsuccessful, then tried to Quarantine it, that was unsuccessful, then tried to Delete it, and that was unsuccessful? I went to the Symantec website, and tried everything they had posted on that virus and how to delete it (ex: safe mode, edit my registry, etc...). Nothing seemed to work.
I was told by a friend about this tech support site, and that someone here should be able to help me out. Once again, be patient with me, and you may have to explain things in detail for me to understand it right or to make sure I do the tasks correctly.

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Download HiJackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer.

1. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
2. Click on the "Unzip" button to install the newer version.
3. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\HiJackThis\
4. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose - Do a system scan and save a logfile.
5. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on Save log.
6. Post the HiJackThis.log file here. Make sure to include the System information at the top of the log.

Once you've done this, an analyst will be along to have a look at your log. Don't worry if there's anything you don't understand - just ask your question(s) before doing any fixing.

This webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix. Please save the following instructions in Notepad. I have customed my instructions on the assumption that you are using Notepad. It may lead to some confusion should you choose to do otherwise.

If there's anything that you don't understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding with the fixes. There should not be any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

If you have not done so already, please enable the viewing of Hidden files
From Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options> View tab.

• Tick - Show hidden files and folder

Click Yes to confirm & then click OK

Locate and delete the following files:

• C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MDMS.EXE

Run Cleanup! using the following configuration:

1. Click Options...
2. Set the slider to Standard CleanUp!
3. Uncheck the following:

• Delete Newsgroup cache
• Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
• Scan local drives for temporary files

4. Click OK
5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at one of the following sites:

• Panda ActiveScan
  
  
• Kaspersky Web Scanner

Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).

• Double-click the tmas-web-scan.exe icon
• It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
• Click "Start Scan"

After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"

• Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
• Click Exit.

Reboot your computer. I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system.

In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

Ok sUBs, I believe I have a problem?

I followed your steps one by one, downloaded the CleanUp.exe program and installed it into the "C:\Program Files\HijackThis" folder. I then disconnected from the Internet. I closed all other programs and any opened windows I had. I did another HiJackThis scan and check-marked the 5 files you said to, (R0, R0, O4, O9, O9), then clicked "fix checked". I already had the viewing of files set to "All". I went into my Windows Explorer and found the MDMS.exe file in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, highlighted it and clicked Delete. Here's where the problem arised. After clicking Delete, a windows box popped up that said "Access is Denied", I clicked OK to clear that, and the MDMS.exe file was also gone. I exited to a different folder, then came back to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder, and the MDMS.exe file was there again. I highlighted it again, clicked Delete, then a different windows box popped up that said "Cannon delete mdms: The specified file is being used by Windows". But it still disappeared when I clicked OK on that window? So I ran the CleanUp program, unchecked the boxes I was told to, clicked OK, it deleted thousands of files. This is where I quit. I did another HiJackThis scan and saved a logfile, which I will paste below. I will not do anymore, until I hear back from you.

Start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools> Delete a file on reboot...

1. In the popup box that appears, type in - c:\windows\system\mdms.exe
2. Click the Open button.
3. Click YES when prompted to restart your computer.

Once you have rebooted, perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

1. Click Scan your PC & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
2. Click Scan Now
3. Enter your e-mail address & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls

Begin the scan by selecting My Computer

• If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
• Click on see report. Then click Save report

Post the contents of the report in your next reply

*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).

• Double-click the tmas-web-scan.exe icon
• It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
• Click "Start Scan"

After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"

• Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
• Click Exit.

Reboot your computer. I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system.

In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

Ok sUBs, I believe I have done all the tasks just as you said.
Below is the Log from the 2nd scan/clean from the TrendMicro Tool. When double-clicking the Antispyware.log file, it asked me what I wanted to use to Opne it, I selected Notepad, I hope that was right? It seems like there isn't much there, but maybe that's a good thing. Then below that I will paste the current HiJackThis Log.

I do have 1 thing that bugs me a little when my PC starts up, I get a little Windows box that asks me for my Network password, I never used to get that before? I had to do a reformat here about 3 months ago, and it has been doing that ever since then. I've looked at different things (IE options, in my Control Panel, etc....), I can't find anywhere where I can bypass that?

Ok sUBs, another "hopefully" minor problem.

When I got home from work this morning, I shut down and restarted my PC. While it was restarting, it stopped with a black screen and a bunch of text, which I will type below exactly what it all said. I think it must have something to do with that AVEO Program file we deleted? Here's the text:

I double-clicked the Add/Remove icon in my Control Panel, nothing called Aveo was in there, but something called Megaphone was. So I clicked on that, then clicked the remove button, it said something about, it couldn't find that and that it may have already been deleted, and asked if I wanted to remove it from the list, I clicked YES. So now it is no longer in the list. I shut down and restarted again, but I got this same text show up before windows was loaded. Am I going to have to change something in my Registry?

PS: Changing from "Client for Microsoft Windows" to "Windows Logon" got rid of that annoying Network Password window that popped up all the time.

Launch Registry Search
In the search box, enter PortShar.vxd & click "Ok".
Notepad will open with some text in it (the file will also be saved in the program's folder as well).
