Apropos Media - AAAHHHH!!

Need some help, folks. I've contracted the Apropos Media problem (and hopefully nothing else) and can't get rid of it. I keep getting random pop-ups, Microsoft Antispywear keeps detecting it and claims to remove it, but of course, it returns after a restart. I've gone through the steps in the sticky thread and done a HJT Log and a HJT Analyzer log:

You mentioned Apropos Media. It's not appearing in your log. Please tell me the exact message as displayed by Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Thanks

Thanks for your attention- I ran Microsoft Antispyware and it detected it again:
AproposMedia (Browser Modifier) Threat Level: Severe
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Aprps
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Aprps\Client PartnerId WB.VER2

AproposMedia
Browser Modifier
Threat Level: Severe
Author: Peopleonpage, Inc

Description: AproposMedia is a browser modifier that installs with PeopleOnPage (POP). AproposMedia displays pop-up advertisements and changes browser settings.

Nothing looks out of place in Add/Remove programs either. All looks like legitimate programs I have installed- Very frustrating!

Thanks for your help
Adam

  1. Go to Start > Run - type REGEDIT
  2. Go to Edit > Find
  3. Select the following options:
    • Checkmark/tick - values
  4. type adchannel in the 'Find what' box & click the 'Find next'
Once you found the key, export that key by right clicking it & save it on Desktop as Arp.txt
Post the contents in your next reply

When I do the search, nothing pulls up- It just says "Finished searching through the registry" and nothing else, unfortunately.

Thanks, Adam

Try this tool .. Download - FindAP.zip
Unzip the contents to a new folder
From that folder, double click on findAP.bat.
It will produce a log - bad.txt.
Please post it's contents in your next reply

I have attached a file to this post - regdel.txt
Download it & rename it "regdel.REG" (inclusive of the quotes)
Make sure you do not mistakenly rename it as regdel.reg.txt (double extensions)
Double-click on it & answer YES when prompted to merge into the Registry

Reboot your computer & tell me if MSAS still nags about it

No problems entering it into the registry-

After reboot MS AntiSypware still detects AproposMedia and I'm still getting the random pop-ups.

Does this mean that you have tried deleting it from the registry before?

If that's the case, let see if a rootkit scanner finds anything. (yes..we do have alot of toys )

Please download RootKitRevealer.zip
Unzip it to the desktop, run it, and click Scan. This will generate a log file.
Please post the entire contents of the log file in your next reply.

Wow- It came up with 3,629 discrepancies- The logfile is so long (407,000 characters) that I will have to split it to multiple posts- I can certainly do it if you need it-
Thanks, Adam

Almost all of the discrepancies are like this:

C:\Program Files\Micvideo\Cache\00005d24_433ca93d_00000000 9/29/2005 10:55 PM 28.76 KB Hidden from Windows API.

I can delete those off the post if they aren't relevant and easily post it

Thanks, Adam

Zip it up using Winzip & place it as an attachment in your next reply.

I'm not familiar with micvideo. Is it a program you installed?
Did your troubles start on Sept 24?

Please export & post the values for this registry key -

HKLM\SOFTWARE\CyilmACsYUEm

I don't have a clue what it is either- I don't recall installing it, and that would be about when I started having issues. It does have a folder under C:Program Files though.

How do I find the registry entry? I tried searching like you had me do previously, but nothing came up-

Thanks, Adam

I checked MS AntiSpyware scan history and the 24th is when I started having issues-
