Nameserver prob returns?
Hi,
A while back i had a namerserver problem after my DNS changed in my hijackthis log. I kept a lot of the antivirus/antispware software that helped solve the problem and have kept it up to date and scanned my computer on a weekly basis. I was told to keep an eye on my DNS and recently its changed, could this be because i've recently reinstalled my broadband drivers after setting up a new BT account or is there something more sinister? I'm running XP Home with AD Aware SE, Spybot Search and Destroy, AVG, Spyguard, ZoneAlarm Firewall and Spyblaster. All fully up to date. They are'nt picking anything up, but yesterday after a spyguard warning that something was trying to change my homepage, nearly 21GB of random files managed to work their way onto my hardrive. My old DNS address was 194.74.65.69.62.6.40.178. My new hijackthis log is as follows Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 19:19:44, on 05/10/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\KodakCCS.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\Alias\Alias ImageStudio 2.1\bin\renderqueue.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ScsiAccess.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe C:\Program Files\USB Storage RW\shwicon.exe C:\Program Files\VERITAS Software\Update Manager\sgtray.exe C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb09.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\BtUsrBdg.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\BTSetBootKey.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE C:\Program Files\BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem\dslstat.exe C:\Program Files\BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem\dslagent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\BTBROA~1\SMARTB~1\BTHelpNotifier.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\Kodak\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\EasyShare.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgmain.exe C:\Program Files\BT Broadband Help\bin\mpbtn.exe C:\Program Files\SpywareGuard\sgbhp.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\soln\HPOSM.exe C:\Program Files\Avant Browser\avant.exe C:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\comp\hptskmgr.exe C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R1 - Yes, a change of ISP could do this. Do you recognize any of the below information?
role: BTnet Support address: 154 St Albans Rd address: Sandridge address: St Albans address: Hertfordshire address: AL4 9NH Just check and fix this in HijackThis: O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1 Where are the random files located and can you give us a few names? Update AVG if any are available and run a full scan in Safe Mode to see if it detects anything.

Hi,
I deleted all of the random files and they haven't returned. Also I don't recognize that address (is that supposed to be mine?!) and i don't know anything about that role. Will try and delete the O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1 entry and post a new log, but it was there before when the problem was last solved, not sure if its changed. Thanks |

The physical address greyknight17 has shown you is related to the issuer of the IP addies showing in your log, BTNet. Each octet shown in the O17 HJT entry links to BTNet.....and as long as they or an affiliate are your ISP, are of no concern. You changed your account, so your IP addy changed with it. Also, unless you have a static address account, this set of octets may be somewhat different in subsequent scans, but would be in the same range as shown in these links:
http://www.ripe.net/perl/whois?searc..._search=Search http://www.ripe.net/perl/whois?searc..._search=Search Did you run a full AV scan as suggested? Where (What directory) were the random files located before you deleted them?

This a an HP computer, right? My guess is that some software updating was going on.....any chance the files are still in your Recycle Bin? Just curious.....
Fix this entry with HJT: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE Quote:
Delete the file ALCXMNTR.EXE<<<find it via Start>Search All else looks good. I know you've recently gotten a protection speech, and you look well protected with AVG and ZoneAlarm but I'll post mine here as well: Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Create a new System Restore point
Enable Windows Auto Update
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use: In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved. Cheers!

Compaq/HP are cousins, and share technologies. Yes, you're right 21GB is a lot...I thought I saw MB....even that would be would be large updating.
Anyhoo, yes your log is clean. IF you have no other issues, I consider this resolved, as long as you do. Make sure to update Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us.
