Programs do not start for 5/10 minutes after loading windows.
I've been having this problem on my desktop PC for a while now, but when it started happening on my brand new laptop, I decided to post here:
If I attempt to load firefox or internet explorer shortly after starting windows, nothing happens. I press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to see if iexplore.exe or firefox.exe are running, but the task manager does not appear. I can open any number of folders or general programs (uch as CD autoruns or setup files) fine, but internet programs do not start. After several minutes, suddenly all of the programs I attempted to load previously open at once. Here's my HJT log, what do you make of it? Hi and Welcome to TSF
Nothing really jumping out here. Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT) Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm Once it has finished save the activescan log. Then post that log in your next post. Question. Are these IP's part of your ISP Provider and/or company network?? Spybot S&D had already been run before making the HJT log, but now doesn't seem to search for all the products. I've been using it since I first posted on TechSupportForum, and it usually takes 10/15 minutes to scan, but this time it only takes two seconds and tells me that there were no threats.
Ad-Aware scan had just been run when I created the HJT log. CWShredder found no instances of CoolWebSearch The first IP is for Internet Connection Sharing (which doesn't work correctly anyway) on my home network. I have never seen the second and third, but they may well be for my NTL connection, as my server's current IP is 194.145.148.77, and gives the same result on a search of www.arin.net/whois Here is the log file from pandasoft: Incident Status Location Spyware:Spyware/ISTbar No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Alastair\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\javainstaller.jar-3cc46f89-2fd7dcb2.zip[InstallerApplet.class] |

Click on Start->Settings->Control Panel->Java Plug-in and click on the Cache tab. Then click on the Clear button and hit OK.
Let's try disabling some programs from startup to see if that improves the loading of those programs. Check and fix these in HijackThis: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_05\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MoneyAgent] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\Money Express.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background Restart and try loading those programs again to see if they still take a while to startup.

I've just done that and I'll restart in a few minutes, however, this time, when I started up, everything started fine.
I'll let you know after I restart. What is ctfmon? |

I think ctfmon.exe is related to the language bar. It's most likely not needed. If it's needed, all you have to do is restore it in HijackThis. But I think ctfmon.exe will come back by itself if you try activating the language bar again.
So does it still take a while to load? If not: Your log is clean. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

As I said, last time I booted everything started fine, but this time everything took ages again.
Ctfmon came back without my activating the language bar, and an AVG scan today showed a virus: Java/Open Stream. Could this be causing it, I have found it several times before, but as it is inside an archive, AVG cannot heal, I just delete it. Any ideas? |

Hello,
Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/. 1. Install Ewido Security Suite. 2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck: * Install background guard * Install scan via context menu 3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it. 4. The program will now open to the main screen. 5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment. 6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. * On the left hand side of the main screen click update. * Then click on Start Update. 7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'. 8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet. If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually. CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to reboot/logoff. Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system. * Click on scanner * Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin. * NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives. o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action. o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections' o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action. * Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report * Click Save report. * Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily. Post the Ewido results here. |

I hadn't printed off your instructions, so I forgot to save the report. However, it found one infection, something about an IMesh bar, which I fixed, and nothing else.
When I started the computer this morning, the problem was still present. |

This should fix it:
Click on Start->Settings->Control Panel->Java Plug-in and click on the Cache tab. Then click on the Clear button and hit OK. Restart and see if it still comes back. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

If you are still having the problem after clearing your Java cache, it doesn't seem to be related to spyware. Perhaps you can post this problem in the Windows XP Forum and let their experts try to help you. Please let them know you've been cleared in the HJT Forum.
