Found a ton of Spyware, can't get rid of one on my own
Hello, and thanks in advance.
My sister-in-law called and said she had "Spyware". Wow, did she have spyware. I went over, updated her WinXP, added NIS/NAV, ran AdAware SE (up to date), Spybot S&D 1.4, SpySweeper, and loaded MS Anti-Spyware. These programs found a lot of stuff, and cleaned out a lot of stuff, but there is still something there. Here is the HiJack This Log (with suspect in red): (Note: l2mfix log follows) - - - - - Thanks again for your help! Yep....that's L2M all right.....
Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot. From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so! Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/. 1. Install Ewido Security Suite. 2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck: * Install background guard * Install scan via context menu 3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it. 4. The program will now open to the main screen. 5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment. 6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. * On the left hand side of the main screen click update. * Then click on Start Update. 7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'. 8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet. Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Reboot into safe mode. Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system. * Click on scanner * Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin. * NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives. o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action. o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections' o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action. * Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report * Click Save report. * Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily. Note: There is no need to purchase Ewido. It will remain as the freeware version after the trial period, which means the guard process will no longer work, but the scanner will be just as effective. Reboot into normal mode now. Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan - requires Internet Explorer
Next, run HJT and post a new log, please. So I need logs from : L2MFix Ewido Panda ActiveScan HJT

Hi oblio98 -
A few more things to do here. Please do the following in this order: Downloads The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. Download FindIt's.zip http://forums.net-integration.net/in...post&id=142443 to your desktop. Unzip/extract the files to a folder on your desktop Download Rkfiles.zip http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip Unzip/extract the contents to a permanent folder on your desktop. The Fix *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! Please configure CleanUp with the following settings: Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: *Click "Options..." *Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!" *Put a check next to the following:
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted. Run KILL box. Paste the following locations into KILL BOX one at a time. Checkmark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\c41bUs.dll C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\fiz1 C:\keys.ini C:\PROGRAM FILES\MyWay C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\KRISTIN\FAVORITES\Going Places C:\backup-20040315-150246-900.dll C:\WINDOWS\INF\biU.inf C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\biU.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msguard.dll Once it reboots, allow it to boot to normal mode. Locate the FindIt's folder on your desktop Open the folder. Double click on FindIt's.bat and wait for Notepad to open a text file. It will take a while so please be patient...then post the FindIt's log here. Note: If you are having problems using FindIt's.bat (16 bit error), copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Now try running FindIt's.bat REBOOT TO SAFE MODE… This tool MUST be run in safe mode!! Once in safe mode… Double click rkfiles.bat It will scan for awhile, so please be patient. Wait until the DOS window closes. Open the C:\log.txt it created and rename it log1.txt. Reboot ito normal mode now. Also, run the Panda scan again and report it's findings. So I need logs from: FindIt's rkfiles Panda ActiveScan

Bob,
Again. Thanks a bunch. Well, I did everything as you asked, and it looks like there are still a few buggers on the PC. It's odd, when I plug in the network cable (from the cable modem to the PC), it almost acts like there is a program downloading stuff from somewhere, as the IE window takes for ever to open, and the PC becomes very sluggish. I am not sure if this is just NIS/NAV going out for a Live Update, or something else. Like I said, this is not my PC, so I have no reference as to what it is like "normally". I am just an uncle who is stuck with solving this problem. Bob,
Just because I am a tinkerer, I tried to rename the file kyf.dat and was able to, so I suppose I could just delete it. I opened it with Notepad, and it is just a bunch of URLs of ad pages. The "Living" folder in Kristin's Favorites was empty, so I deleted it. The l2mfix.exe are just the files I used as per your directions (right???) That leaves that one registry entry. Of course, I may have totally screwed up by doing this, and should not have. What do you suggest? :-jon |

Hi Jon -
Go ahead and delete that renamed file. Yes, the l2mfix.exe are the tool we used....you can ignore them. We'll address those finds, then I'd like you to run a couple more scanning tools. These can take some time, but will cover a broad range of issues. Run KILL box.
Select/Highlight all the filename(s) from the above. Copy to clipboard by pressing [CTRL]+[C] on your keyboard. Start KillBox.exe
* If you received a message such as: "PendingFileRenameOperations registry data has been removed by external process", you have to manually restart Windows. * If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run missingfilesetup.exe Then try Killbox again. Allow it to reboot into normal mode now. Reboot back into normal mode now. Download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
Please run FindIt's and rkfiles each again, using the previous instructions, to be certain those issues are cleared. Last, please run HJT again, save the log, and post it here. So I need logs from: Ewido TrendMicro AntiSpyware FindIt's rkfiles HJT Note: MicroSoft AntiSpyware Program: Because of recent changes in the way this program now defines and detects spyware/adware it is no longer recommend as a spyware removal tool. Microsoft as downgraded several adware/spyware programs that it used to detect and remove and now lists them simply as “Ignore” These are some of the adware/spyware programs that this program will NOT prompt you to remove. Claria, 180Solutions, WhenU, New.net, most WhenU apps, eZula,TopText, Gain/Gator, and Webhancer. These are all known adware/spyware programs and hijackers. Basically this product can no longer be trusted!! I recommend you remove it Here are some other tools which will do the job quite well: AdawareSE (free) Spybot Search and Destroy (Teatimer Enabled) (free) IESpy-Ad (free) SpywareBlaster (free) WinPatrol (free) CounterSpy (free trial).

OK Bob, we are egtting close. In fact, we may be "there", I'm not sure. The PC is still very "sluggish". I ran a defrag, but maybe I have so many anti-spyware programs running, it's choking the thing. Anyway, here are the results:

Bob,
I just noticed that it looks like those .ico files regened themselves. The .exe did not! UGH! I'm going to leave the thing on and online overnight to see what happens. Thanks again for all of your help. :-jon Last edited by oblio98; 08-19-2005 at 10:59 PM. |

Not sure if they regened or just didn't get deleted. Let's try again.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AddQuit.ico C:\WINDOWS\system32\Desktop.ico C:\WINDOWS\system32\Help.ico C:\WINDOWS\system32\IE.ico C:\WINDOWS\system32\Open.ico C:\WINDOWS\system32\Quick.ico C:\WINDOWS\system32\Uninstall.ico Select/Highlight all the filename(s) from the above. Copy to clipboard by pressing [CTRL]+[C] on your keyboard. Run KILL box. 1. Go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard * this feature does not work on older versons of Killbox Click the dropdown-arrow next to the "Full Path of File to Delete" field. Verify that the filenames you pasted are found in there. 2. Select/tick the following: * Delete on Reboot * End Explorer Shell While Killing File * Unregister.dll Before Deleting * if it's not grayed out 3. Click the RED X button. 4. Click Yes at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt. 5. Click Yes at the 'Pending Operations prompt'. Run Killbox a second time with the same list of files. Then check your System32 folder for their presence. If still present, manually delete each one. If deletion still proves problematic, reboot into safe mode and delete the files. Let me know if they persist. The rest of your logs appear clean. You can eliminate MS's AntiSpyware program, for the reasons noted above. You have 2 others which each have real time monitoring features...Webroot's Spysweeper and WinPatrol, and having more than one active can cause some slowing. Ewido also has a real time monitor, until the trial expires. Other than that, your logs appear clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Create a new System Restore point
Enable Windows Auto Update
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use: In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Bob,
Thanks again. The reason I thought these files got regened was that their creation date had changed. Anyway, I did what you said, ran the killbox again and they are now gone! I cleaned up their "Startup" stuff, deleted some of the things like "Quicken Startup", things they really don't have to have running. I also uninstalled the MS Spyware deal, as per your direction, and also uninstalled SpySweeper to keep the background processes to a minimum. I left the install file on the PC in case I need it in the future. So, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. YOU ARE THE MAN!!! I could not have done this without your help, and I sincerely appreciate it. I was watching one of the scans and saw some registry settings or hidden directories fly by that indicated that there was at one point some KAZAA stuff on the PC. I assume that is where the spyware came from. I will have a talk with the neices and nephews when I bring this PC back today. Again, THANKS BIG TIME! I learned a lot. |
