DLL errors, programs hanging, etc etc etc...
OK, I'm having a lot of problems with my computer at the mo' - any help would be appreciated!
#1 - Shutting down takes several tries (through start menu or task manager), sometimes I have to eventually kill the computer by holding the power key down #2 - any NEW programs that I have installed - say in the last couple of months - do not generally run properly. Either nothing happens when I try to open the program (although it shows up in task manager - and then I am unable to kill the process and have to shut down and restart) or the program will start, I will be able to do like ONE thing, and then it will be not responding #3 - Word and excel - I can input data and save in these programs, but can't change fonts or formats without it crashing. #4 - I get "run a dll as an app" error if I try to access advanced options on desktop display properties. The only other error I ever get is from Norton - it's missing ordinal 126 or something (sorry, haven't got that one in a while, and can't really remember). Otherwise, I have never had problems with my computer. I have Norton internet security, trojan-hunter, ad-aware, spybot that I update and scan on a regular basis. Following is my log from Hijack this.... Please help me!! And please be gentle... I am not a computer techie!!! THANX Much appreciated! Hi again,
OK, so I ran that scan (twice, actually, becuase I missed the conclusion of the first one!). It looks like everything is ok as the message box just disappeared. I managed to fix my problem #4 above by downloading a new rundll32.exe file from the Merijn website, so that is all good. To give you an example of the installing new program problem - I just downloaded OPera this afternoon and ran the install. Everything looks cool. I have tried to open it like 3 times, got the little hourglass and then nothing else. Once, I got a message from NIS saying that Opera was trying to access the internet. When I look in my task manager, I have 3 incidents of opera. I am able to kill 2 of them, but not the third, so it will be hanging there until I restart my computer. Any thoughts??? C :-) |

That is good to know (about the e-mail). I was actually switching from the old Firefox/Thunderbird combo because I seem to spend most of my life compacting folders....
The other programs that I could not get to run properly on my computer were "SpeedupmyPC" from Uniblue (which took about 17 emails with their support people just to uninstall it!) and Earth.Google - which I used once - enough to get hooked - and havent been able to use since. On the otherhand, I installed Microsoft Visio last week and can use it no problem. I just don't get it! The scariest thing is this problem with Word & Excel. I use them ALL THE TIME for work. Argh. |

Hi and Welcome to TSF
Not much to address in your log. Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run the following tools. Download and update the databases on each program before running. Also make sure you are using the the latest version (1.99.1) of HijackThis and it's installed in it's own folder on the root drive. (C:\HJT) Download Hoster http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe Run hijackthis and fix the following entrys... O1 - Hosts: 161.242.218.72 blmslhrehq01 O15 - Trusted Zone: http://download.windowsupdate.com O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.windowsupdate.com Now open the hoster program and select "Restore Orginal Hosts File" Reboot the PC. Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm Select the “Autofix/Clean” option IF it’s found and save the activescan log. Then post that log in your next post along with a new hijackthis log. *note* Please visit this website - http://virusscan.jotti.org/ Submit these file(s) for a comprehensive scan & then post the results back here C:\Program Files\Fujitsu\fjdvrupd\fjdvrupd.exe Pretty sure it's a legit Fujitsu Driver Update file...but I need to check.

Hello again
Sorry for the delay but all this scanning and rebooting sure seems to take alot of time!!! OK, I ran NAV, Trojan hunter, ad-aware, spybots, CWshredder and nothing fishy found. The fujitsu file is cool. I did all the other stuff that you suggested as well. That error that I couldn't remember started again today. It is from CCApp.exe (I believe a Norton file). The error is "Ordinal 126 cannot be located in MAPI32.dll" (sometimes the number is 129 or 81). CCApp.exe is also the program that has problems shutting down when I try to power off. Is it possible to overwrite the MAPI32.dll file with a new one?? Also, today, the computer's been pretty quick at shutting down, but gets stuck on the blue "logging off" screen, so I still eventually have to hold the power button to get it to turn off anyway.... Here is the results of the panda scan (there was no option for log, so i just copy/paste), the Hijackthis is below that one. Your log is clean. I would ask your question back in the XP forum. I would be willing to bet that Norton is a big part of the problem. Check your event viewer to see which program is causeing the errors. It could be that Norton is having trouble closeing out..when you shut down..or another program is. I would suggest reinstalling Norton to see if it corrects your issue.
If you want to overwrite that file...just make sure it's a newer version. My feeling here..though is Norton is the problem as your errors are associated with it's files. Since you also have an issue with a few other programs...try running sfc /scannow from the run box and check for any missing or corrupt windows files.

*%$#@#$$!!! Norton!!!!
Hello again,
I had put a post on the XP forum as well and they had also suggested that Norton could be the problem... Well, guess what? I disabled the anti-spam in Norton and.... No more errors in Word, Excel, etc. No more errors when I try to access things like display and print and whatever. In short, no more errors! And the frustrating thing is the anti-spam hasn't been doing anything in all this time because my email is already pretty secure and I don't get any spam!!! I have been thinking about replacing Norton for a while, cuz it's such a behemoth... Last question is can you recommend a good anti-virus? Or can anyone??? All I need is anti-virus and firewall - I've got everything else covered. Now I am going to celebrate! CARO |

Recommended Protection Programs Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use: In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles I use AVG FREE and Zone Alarm and would recommend both as an AntiVirus/Firewall solution. In today’s world you MUST have an Antivirus program. If you do not have an Antivirus program here are some FREE ones.
