Adware.Gain & HuntBar

Hello. My virus protection keeps telling me I have Adware.Gain and HuntBar on my computer and I can't seem to remove them. I have scanned my computer with SpyBot, CWShredder, Ad-Aware SE, Spyware Blaster, and Housecall by Trend Micro. I have run Hijack This, saved the log, and then used the Hijack This Analyzer program to get the "new" log.

Could you please let me know if the log is clean AND if you have any other suggestions for me to get rid of this problem?

Thank you VERY MUCH!

"New" Log

I don't see either running in your logs.

Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.

Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm
Select the “Autofix/Clean” option IF it’s found and save the activescan log. Then post that log in your next post.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

HuntBar
Internet Optimiser

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Reply to MicroBell

I ran the TrendMicro Anti-spyware once, cleaned, and have the log of my second scan on my desktop; however, I can't open it to then copy and paste it in here. Also, I tried the panda software and it didn't give the option after scanning to "Autofix/Clean". It gave me the option to send it to the laboratory. What shall I do with these?
Thank you!

Did you save the scan from Panda? If so, attach it to this post. You can also attach the TMAS log also. I'm not sure why you cant open it - it's only a txt file and should be opened in NotePad.

If you can't open those files and paste the text here...please do as POADB suggested and zip the files up. Then attach the zip file to your next post. It seams Panda no longer uses the "AutoFix/CLean" option so that was my error.

We will definately need a Virus scan to determine if you are clean. It's worth spending the time running another.

Do an online scan at one of the following sites:Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe.

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - Choose YES when informs you the file will be deleted on Reboot. Choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\HDPlugin1014.dll
C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\ATPartners.inf
C:\WINDOWS\INF\POLALL1R.INF
C:\WINDOWS\INF\BI7.INF
C:\WINDOWS\INF\POLALL1R.INF
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\QDow.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\QDow.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\flash.inf
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ATPartners.inf
C:\NULL

Reboot your computer.

Please visit this website - virusscan.jotti.org
Submit these file(s) for a comprehensive scan & then post the results back here.

C:\Program Files\Rhapsody\xviews.dll

Re-run Panda and HJT. How are things now?

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. You can use a registry cleaner to clear that last entry...or don't worry about it. It's files are gone..and it's just leftovers.

We still have a few more items to address so please follow the instructions below.

Reset hidden/system files and folders

Windows XP
===============
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Windows 2000
===============
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Select the Advanced settings box option.
  • Select the Hidden files Folders.
  • Deselect the Show all files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Windows ME
===============
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Windows 95/98/98SE
===============
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the View
  • Select the Folder Options option.
  • Select the View tab. option.
  • Select the Advance Advanced settings box option.
  • Select the Hidden files folder.
  • Deselect the Show all files option
  • Click Apply to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point

Windows XP
===============
  • Click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • Select the System Restore Tab
  • Tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • Click Apply
  • Then untick the same checkbox & click OK
  • This deletes ALL restore points that had the infection and creates a clean one

Windows ME
===============
  • Click the Start tab.
  • Select the Settings option.
  • Select the Control Panel option.
  • Double Click the System icon Performance tab option.
  • Select File System
  • Select the Troubleshooting tab
  • Check the Disable System Restore box
  • Click Apply to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Reboot the PC and repeat the above procedure again
When you get to this option
  • Uncheck the Disable System Restore box

For Windows ME..we MUST create a new restore point now as Windows ME will not create one automatically until the computer has been on for 10 hours or 24 hours has passed. To create a new restore point follow the procedure below.
  • Click the Start button.
  • Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
  • Choose Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  • In the Restore point description box, type a name for your restore point, and then click Next.
    Click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • Tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Please visit Microsoft's Window's Update Page and install the latest service packs, patch’s and security updates for your system.

Recommended Protection Programs

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  • WinPatrol to monitor any changes that programs make to the registry.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 4 free ones available for personal use:

In today’s world you MUST have an Antivirus program. If you do not have one, here are 3 FREE ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
Please stay safe out there and take the helpful advice that’s been given. The goal here is to prevent the adware/spyware/virus/worms from getting on the system in the first place.

A couple of things... 1. I don't know how to create a new system restore point for windows 98 & you didn't tell me how. 2. I did another full system scan with my virus protection program Norton Antivirus and it still says I have three (3) adware.gain things on my computer making it at risk. So I don't know that I would call this thread resolved.

Do I need to do a new system restore and why would other scanning programs call my computer clean and Norton still find three threats?

Windows 98 doesn't have system restore - hence why it wasn't listed in MB's instructions above.

If possible, right down the name of the Viruses and the locations of the viruses found by Norton.

Please follow POADB's suggestion and write down the virus's name and location. My guess here..is that it's maybe in the recycle bin, nortons protection folder, virus vault....or it's a entry in the registry thats being picked up.

OK...Norton names all three of these as adware.gain

Here are the locations it gave:
C:\WINDOWS\DownloadedProgramFiles\CONFLICT.1\HDPlugin1014.dll
C:\WINDOWS\DownloadedProgramFiles\CONFLICT.2\HDPlugin1014.dll
C:\WINDOWS\DownloadedProgramFiles\CONFLICT.3\HDPlugin1014.dll

What now?

C:\WINDOWS\DownloadedProgramFiles\CONFLICT.1\
C:\WINDOWS\DownloadedProgramFiles\CONFLICT.2\
C:\WINDOWS\DownloadedProgramFiles\CONFLICT.3\

Delete those conflict folders above. They shouldn't be there.

When you are done - you are clean.

When I go to the downloaded Program Files folder those items, conflict1, 2, & 3, are not there. I have tried that before. They are not there and yet Norton Antivirus can find them and says they are there. Do you have another suggestion?
