HJT log - problems galore with IE
Hmmm...I'm having major problems with IE, such as:
If I have more than 1 IE window open and close 1, they ALL close; I can't open links via emails in Outlook; Google searches produce the first 3 results from ebay.com, smileycentral.com and purplechat.com.I'd be really grateful if someone could assess my HJT log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 5:51:04 PM, on 13/08/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\E-KEY\CeEKey.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\Power Management\CePMTray.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\Program Files\EzButton\EzButton.EXE C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apoint.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TouchPad\TPTray.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\ConfigFree\NDSTray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\Touch and Launch\PadExe.exe C:\WINDOWS\AGRSMMSG.exe C:\Program Files\ltmoh\Ltmoh.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSCDSPD\toscdspd.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\Power Management\CeEPwrSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\ConfigFree\CFSvcs.exe C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apntex.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\DVDRAMSV.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RAMASST.exe C:\Program Files\NETGEAR\WG111 Configuration Utility\WG111CFG.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Nicole\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis[1].zip\HijackThis.exe R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.ocx O2 - BHO: IEsearch.clsIESpy - {4508E20C-ACAD-11D2-9FC0-00550076E06F} - c:\progra~1\2search\plugin.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll O2 - BHO: DriveLetterAccess - {5CA3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswshx.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CeEKEY] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\E-KEY\CeEKey.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CeEPOWER] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\Power Management\CePMTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EzButton] C:\Program Files\EzButton\EzButton.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Apoint] C:\Program Files\Apoint2K\Apoint.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TPNF] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TouchPad\TPTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NDSTray.exe] NDSTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dla] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PadTouch] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\Touch and Launch\PadExe.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AGRSMMSG] AGRSMMSG.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LtMoh] C:\\Program Files\\ltmoh\\Ltmoh.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [signup] D:\hb5.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Preview AdService] C:\Program Files\Preview AdService\PrevAdServ.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\adwarealert.Exe -boot O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TOSCDSPD] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSCDSPD\toscdspd.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Quick Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\ONENOTEM.EXE O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE O4 - Global Startup: RAMASST.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\system32\RAMASST.exe O4 - Global Startup: Smart Wizard Wireless Settings.lnk = ? Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.
Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab: * Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders. * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option. * Click Yes to confirm and then click OK. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs already - Ad-aware, Spybot and CWShredder. If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: AdwareAlert<<<<it’s rogueware (or known to be rogueware in the past) and we highly recommend that you uninstall it. Rogue/Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection. Preview AdService Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O2 - BHO: IEsearch.clsIESpy - {4508E20C-ACAD-11D2-9FC0-00550076E06F} - c:\progra~1\2search\plugin.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Preview AdService] C:\Program Files\Preview AdService\PrevAdServ.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\adwarealert.Exe -boot O16 - DPF: {20048BB3-DB68-11CF-9CAF-00AA006CB425} (007installer Control) - http://download.007guard.com/msnnames/msnnames.cab O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://www.popcap.com/games/popcaploader_v6.cab Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: c:\progra~1\2search C:\Program Files\Preview AdService C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. Download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
Run a scan using Panda ActiveScan . Be sure to select any AutoClean Feature. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.
I apologize for not having you do this sooner.....please do so now: Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted. I see you have not removed AdwareAlert from your system....this program is identified as rogueware here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm Rogue/Suspect means that these products are of unknown, questionable, or dubious value as anti-spyware protection. Please follow the instructions to remove this from your system. The programs I linked you to in my last post, Adaware and Spybot S&D, will more than adequately do the job, and they are free. Download this ISTbar removal tool and run it: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxIstbar.exe Note: Removing this adware component from the system will likely cause the program that installed it to not function as intended. The uninstaller generally identifies the programs that will not work after uninstallation. Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/. 1. Install Ewido Security Suite. 2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck: * Install background guard * Install scan via context menu 3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it. 4. The program will now open to the main screen. 5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment. 6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files. * On the left hand side of the main screen click update. * Then click on Start Update. 7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'. 8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet. Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows: *Click "Options..." *Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!" *Put a check next to the following:
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted. Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system. * Click on scanner * Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin. * NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives. o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action. o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections' o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action. * Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report * Click Save report. * Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: AdwareAlert Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdwareAlert] C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert\adwarealert.Exe -boot Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: C:\Program Files\AdwareAlert C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SahImages C:\WINDOWS\system32\spectreysb.exe Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. Also, run a new scan with Panda ActiveScan and post the log here. So I need logs from: Ewido HJT Panda ActiveScan What is the condition of your system now, please?

I ran Adaware and Spybot but neither of them detected AdwareAlert, so I'm still not sure if it's been removed. AdwareAlert is also not present in Add/Remove programs.
My computer's running much better now. None of the 3 problems I originally mentioned are occuring anymore but I'm not sure how to get rid of the problem that Panda ActiveScan found. What Panda found is some remnant in the registry...any registry cleaning utility such as CCleaner or Registry Mechanic will help you remove that and other "dead" entries which may be present.
Other than that.... Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address. Reset hidden/system files and folders
Create a new System Restore point
Enable Windows Auto Update
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use: In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
