Please help: Getting rid of popups.

I'm having a real problem with persistent pop-ups coming up on my computer whether I'm on or off the internet. I've tried fixing the problem with Spybot, Adaware, Norton Antivirus, AOL spyware remover, and the trendmicro scanner. The removal programs fail to fix the problem, and continue to find the same problems i.e "elitebar".

I saw another topic that was similar to my problem, but didn't want to follow the instructions without showing you guys my Highjackthis log. Your help would be appreciated.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Next, download the following tool : http://www.simplytech.it/ETRemover/ETRemover_v130.zip and unzip it to it's own folder.

WARNING!! This tool should be run from safe mode only. It will not be able to delete files in use by Windows, so running it from a regular windows session is useless. A readme is included with complete details on the tool and the malware it removes.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run the ETRemover.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\eliteruf32.exe
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\IEExtension.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\IEExtension.dll
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/D...e/bridge-c9.cab

Delete the following Files if they exist:

C:\windows\system32\eliteruf32.exe

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Next, Run a scan using Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan. Be sure to use the Autoclean feature. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Hi,

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Click Start>Run and type in regedit. Click File>Export and save a copy of the registry somewere in case you make a mistake.

Navigate to each of the following keys and delete the file/folder/entry that I highlighted in RED.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{00ada225-ea6c-4fb3-82e8-68189201ccb9}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{48E59292-9880-11CF-9754-00AA00C00908}
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{15696ae2-6ea4-47f4-bea6-a3d32693efc7}

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\Q330994.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ide21201.vxd
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\JONATHAN\FAVORITES\Casino & Carrers
C:\Documents and Settings\Family\Local Settings\Temp\wu.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jonathan\Local Settings\Temp\uninstall.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\temperror32.dat

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following files:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\Q330994.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ide21201.vxd
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\JONATHAN\FAVORITES\Casino & Carrers
C:\Documents and Settings\Family\Local Settings\Temp\wu.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Jonathan\Local Settings\Temp\uninstall.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\temperror32.dat

Reboot into Normal Mode. Run another scan with Panda ActiveScan and post those results here.

I did what you said and here are my pandascan results. For some reason, I started getting popups at the time of the scan, when they weren't appearing for a while.

Download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and install it. Update to the newest definitions. If you have trouble updating, you may do it manually at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ Do NOT the Ewido scan yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

MediaAccess

Run the ETRemover again.

Run Ewido:
*Click [Scanner]
*Click [Complete System Scan] to begin scanning.
*Click [OK] when prompted to clean files

With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click [OK].

Once finished, click the [Save report] button
Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Post the results of the scan here.

Thanks again for all your help. I haven't seen any popups as of late. I did what you said, and here is my scan. I didn't delete the aol9.0 file because the program said that it wasn't sure if the file actually harmful or not.

OK, that looks better. Look for and remove from Add/Remove Programs:

MediaGateway

Search for and delete the following files/folders:

C:\Program Files\Media Gateway

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Please configure CleanUp with the following settings:

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Please run Panda scan one more time, and also provide it's log.

Next, run a scan with HJT and save the log. Post it here.

Still spyware! I still haven't noticed any popups though. I couldn't find any MediaGateway file or program.

  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  • WinPatrol to monitor any changes that programs make to the registry.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
Please stay safe out there and take the helpful advice that’s been given. The goal here is to prevent the adware/spyware/virus/worms from getting on the system in the first place.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
