Pop Ups and C++ buffer overrun

I am currently getting pop-ups when I start to browse the internet which stop after 5mins. I am also getting a "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" message as well as getting a warning occasionally, saying as follows;

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Buffer overrum detected!

Program: C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated"

Also, today when I start up my laptop I get a Windows Installer which stops then displays a message saying "Norton 2005 cannot be repaired, please uninstall and reinstall"

I have run Norton, Spybot and AdAdware and found nothing. I was advised to run RegCleaner and CCleaner, yet that also failed to stop the problem.

The Hijack log suggests nothing. Let's try two more scans, just to look deeper.

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3 http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=download. Learn how to use it at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=easytouse. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=update. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to 'System Testing' on the menu and choose 'Full System Scan'. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies. If you have problems copying the text, look (or search) for a file named scandump.txt and see if that has the alarms - post that here.

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.

Thats the wrong panel my friend - but it's clean as it states 0 alarms so you're ok.

Can we see the mwav.exe log please.

Hi,

Nothing there either. Let's try this:

Run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ and save the results from the scan and post that here.

If that scan comes up clean, please do the following:

Download StartDreck (written by Nikolaus Rameis) from
http://www.niksoft.at/download/startdreck.htm

Unzip to its own folder, not a TEMPorary folder. I recommend c:/program files/startdreck/

Doubleclick startdreck.exe
Select <Config>, Choose 'Unmark All'

Check the following boxes only:
*Under Registry check:
Run Keys
Active Setup
Internet Explorer
*Under Files, check:
Autostart Folders
*Under System/drivers, check:
Running processes,
%System%/VMM32
%SYSTEM%/IOSUBSYS
Select <Save>. Be sure to Save the log into the startdreck directory.
Post log to this forum

Right click on http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (ex: Ad-Watch, TeaTimer, Norton, etc.). Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. This will take a few minutes. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post.

Ok, now we're getting somewhere.

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Uninstall Norton and Symantec Live Update via Add/Remove.

Using Windows Explorer, search for and delete any folders named Norton or Symantec.

Reboot then reinstall Norton.

That's me sorted.

Do you have any idea what caused this and how to prevent it in the future?

Thanks a lot for all your help.
Cheers

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few items to address.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start>Run - type wuaucpl.cpl
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
In light of your recent hiccup, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
