Question Nail.exe

Hi,

I need help.............!!!

My desktop & icons were blinking. So, I did the followings:

1. PC-Cillin free online scan & deleted the uncleanable files.
2. Scan Ad-Aware to remove all infected items.

Now the following errors pop-up at startup:

1. RUNDLL message: "Error loading C:\PROGRA~1\3721\helper.dll. The specified module could not be found."

2. "CreateRemoteThread Failed"

3. Nail.exe message: "Windows cannot find C:\Windows\Nail.exe. Please make sure to type correctly. And go to startup to search the file."

Also, I have problems to open files/folders in C: & D: from My Computer. It usually opens up a window to show all files/folders when I click on C: & D: in My Computer. But now it only opens a "search window" when I click on C: & D: in My Computer.

Can anyone help to provide solutions?

Thanks!

Christina

Please download HiJackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HiJackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose [Do a system scan and save a logfile].
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit [Scan] and then click on [Save log].
3. Post the HiJackThis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HiJackThis since they may be harmless.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

My advice to you. Stay well away from www.3721.com !!!

Please subscribe to this thread to be notified of fixes as soon as they are posted by our Team. To do this, please click the "Thread Tools" button located in the original thread line and selecting "Subscribe to this Thread".

It would appear that your Operating System and Internet Explorer are not up to date and this seems to be contributing to your problems. Please consider going to Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates. Patch your system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known vulnerabilities.

It's better to print out the next instructions or save them in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.
It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!.
If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please download these additional files/programs :- (Do not run them unless instructed to do so)
Unplug your computer from the Internet when you have finished downloading
CleanUp! - Install
KillBox v2.0.0.175 - Save to Desktop.
Ewido Security Suite - Install & Update it's database but do not run it yet.
Nailfix - Unzip to the desktop
FindIt's.zip - Unzip to a new folder on Desktop
Process Explorer - Save to Desktop
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Run a scan with HiJackThis & locate an O4 entry that looks similar to this...
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ribxmmw] c:\windows\system32\bpgtwx.exe r
The name might be different but it resides in the system32 folder & has the alphabet "r" at the end. Close HiJackThis after you have identified this file. This is the file we need to use Process Explorer with.

Run Process Explorer and find name & location of the file you've just identified in the list of Processes.
Select the process and click Process > Suspend
Leave Process Explorer running with the process suspended until the computer reboots

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Copy to clipboard, all the items below by highlighting them & pressing [CTRL]+[C] on your keyboard.
name & location of the file you've just identified
c:\windows\system32\bpgtwx.exe
C:\WINDOWS\downlo~1\CnsMinEx.dll
Start KillBox
  1. Go to the File menu, and choose [Paste from Clipboard].
    Verify that you've done this properly by clicking the dropdown-arrow next to the [Full Path of File to Delete] field. The filenames you pasted will be found in there.
  2. Select/tick the following:
    • "Delete on Reboot"
    • "End Explorer Shell While Killing File"
    • "Unregister.dll Before Deleting" if it's not grayed out.
  3. Click the RED X button.
  4. Click [Yes] at the 'Delete on Reboot' prompt. Click [Yes] at the Pending Operations prompt.
* If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Reboot to SafeMode
  1. Shut Windows down, and then turn off the computer.
  2. Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer. Some computers display a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS, while others may not display any indication that this process is happening.
  3. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the
    Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
  4. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the Safe mode menu item, and then press Enter.

When your done, rescan your system and make sure the following isn't present:

N3 - Netscape ... 5CSBWeb_01.src (or) 5CSBWeb_02.src

If it is, then fix that entry again; sometimes it'll take more than one pass. The actual entry is ok, and won't be deleted, it's the java wrapper marked in red that needs to be removed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Enable the viewing of Hidden files
  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Go to Tools>Folder Options>View tab.
  3. enable the option for `Show hidden files and folder´
  4. disable the option for `Hide file extensions for known types´
  5. disable the option for `Hide protected operating system files´
  6. click "Yes" to confirm & then click "OK"
Locate and delete the following folder(s), if present:
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vidctrl\
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Run Cleanup! & configure the program as follows:
  1. Click Options...
  2. Move the arrow down to Custom CleanUp!
  3. Put a check next to the following:
    • Empty Recycle Bins
    • Delete Cookies
    • Delete Prefetch files
    • [X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
    • Cleanup! All Users
  4. Click OK
  5. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
* CleanUp! will delete all the files in your temp folders without making a backup

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Run Ewido:
  • Click Scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • Click OK when prompted to clean files
  • With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click OK.
  • Once finished, click the Save report button
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido
* Ewido scan would require at least an hour. I suggest that you go grab a cup of coffee & do something else while you wait for it to complete.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Reboot to NormalMode.

Do an online scan at Panda

Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reboot Again & Run FindIt's.bat and wait for notepad to open a text file. Please be patient as it requires some time to finish running. Then post the results in your next reply
In your next post, please include fresh copies of:
  • HiJackThis log
  • List of files that Panda failed to disinfect
  • Ewido's logs
  • FindIt's log
Please provide details of any problems you encountered whilst performing the above steps.
Hi,
Thanks for the instructions again. However, I have a serious problem of my computer before I can proceed your instruction. I did online scan from PC-Cillin and I disabled the real-time scan of PC-Cillin 2005 for the online scan. Then, desktop & icons were disappeared and "My Document" window pop-up during the online scan . But none of the folders in "My Document" can be opened. It keeps opening "My Document" window everytime when I click on each/any folder in My Document.
I have tried to restart the computer for many times. But it remains the same situation - desktop & icons were disappeared and only "My Document" window shows on the screen everytime I login to C: So, I am unable to operate my C: now. I am using D: to write this message.
What can I do now to solve the problem for C: in order to proceed your previous instruction?
Look forward to hearing from you soon!
Thanks!
It seems that you did not carry out my instructions in the order as I laid out.
Online scan was supposed to be the last thing on to-do list.
Tell me which steps you have done. Give me the list of files cleaned by PC-Cillin. Are you able to boot into Safe Mode? I would like an updated copy of HijackThis log.
Hi,
There was nothing I have done except online scan by PC-Cillin. As I usually did it when desktop & icons keep blinking. By running online scan & Ad-Aware. It would allow me to operate about 5 minutes before desktop & icons became blinking again. So I did not know what happened and why desktop & icons were all disappeared.......
The viruses that I deleted from online scan was as below:
TROJ_NAIL.EXE C:\WINDOWS\NAIL.EXE
TROJ_STERVIS.C C: WINDOWS\SVCPROC.EXE
No, I am not able to login to Safe Mode. It was the same as Normal Mode. Therefore, I cannot run HijackThis Log from C: Can I run it from D:? (I have 2 operating systems.)
Please advise what I can do now..........
Thanks!
REBOOT TO LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION
  1. Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
  2. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
  3. Continue to do so until the 'Windows Advanced Options' menu appears.
  4. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the menu item - LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION.
Let me recap.
  1. You're able to login to the OS at Drive C.
  2. You have problem with accessing "My Documents" folder
  3. Desktop icons are blinking
Is that all? Please describe in details are the problems you face. I need to assses the situation before I can advise you.
You should be able to run a HijackThis scan if you're able to login. Ignore the blinking desktop & just run the scan. Then post the results here
Hi,
Yes, I am able to login to C: but I am not able to operate in C:
Desktop & icons are all disappeared. They were blinking before. But they are all disappeared now. The only thing shows on the screen when I login is "My Document" window which none of the folders in My Document can be opened. It says "Windows cannot find C:\Windows\Document & Settings\My Document\.............." Therefore, I am unable to do anything in C: now. I am using D: to post this message (I have 2 operating systems installed in this computer.)
Please kindly advise what I can do to solve this problem.
Thanks!
Login to C again.
Press [Ctrl] + [Alt] +[Delete] to bring up task manager.
In Task Manager, click the File menu & select New Task (Run...)
Click on the Browse.. button & navigate to where HijackThis is located. - C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe
Then click OK.
This should bring up the HijackThis program. Run a new scan & save the log in Drive D. Post it here so I can see what's going on.
If you're unable to start HijackThis using this method, go to the Processes tab of Task Manager. Select explorer.exe & click the End Process button. Then try starting HijackThis again.
You may shutdown windows by going to Task Manager> Shut Down - turn off
Fix this entry now.
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe,C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
That should alleviate the blinking desktop issue. Let me know how it goes.
Hi,
I am ready to proceed your instruction in message #4. But I have a question. I have PC-Cillin 2005 trial version installed in my computer now. Should I remove it before running Ewido? Pls adv ASAP.
Thanks!
Here's an alternate link for nailfix - http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file.p...50515010747824
Click here for the proper version of Process Explorer - http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorerNt.zip
There's no need to uninstall PC-Cillin. Ewido was meant to compliment PC-Cillin.
