Midtown Madness! Virus

Hi,
I was hit by something new, because neither Norton Antivirus 2005 nor Pc Cillin Online Scan knew it. Most of my program files now have a description which says (Midtown Madness Excutable) and most of the program logos have changed to a yellow Volkswagen Beetle !!! the programs of course are not working.

I have Win XP Pro with SP2, Norton Internet Security 2005 plus SpySweeper 4.0 all installed and updated to the latest

Here is my last HiJcakThis Log:

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature.

Please go to at least two of these sites and run an online Virus Scan.
Be sure to have the AutoFix box(es) checked.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx
http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/d...d=ie&venid=sym
http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx

Then UPDATE your version of hijackthis and post a new log!

You can zip it up and attach it your next post. I see nothing showing in your log and have NOT heard of a trojan/virus/worm like your describing. This sounds like you have an issue with your EXE icons being assigned to that icon from Midtown Madness.

I do what you to post the following logs....

Download: StartDreck

Unzip to its own folder and start the program:
Press 'Config'
Press 'Mark All'

UN-Check the 'NT-Services & NT-Kernel...' boxes only:
Press 'Ok'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread..

Download Silent runners.Vbs http://www.silentrunners.org/
1. Make sure you have any script blocking software disabled
2. Run the program. It will take a few minutes to complete.
3. Once complete it will produce a log named “StartupPrograms” with Your user and date in the filename. Open that txt file and posts it contents in your next post.

Ok..lets try this....

Do you have or had the game Midtown Madness?

Download this registry fix..
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip

Unzip the reg file inside to your desktop. Then double click it..and allow it to merge.

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Now navigate to the following file..C:\WINDOWS\wininit.ini

Open it with wordpad and remove these entrys..

`C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsktrf.dll=C:\DOCUME~1\MMAHMO ~1.ACT\LOCALS~1\Temp\WIN41.tmp
`NUL=C:\WINDOWS\polall1r.exe
`NUL=

`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=
`NUL=

Save the file when done.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsktrf.dll <--delete that file
C:\WINDOWS\polall1r.exe <--delete that file

Run Ewido:
  • Click [Scanner]
  • Click [Complete System Scan] to begin scanning.
  • Click [OK] when prompted to clean files
  • With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option - "Perform action on all infections" - & choose clean and click [OK].
  • Once finished, click the [Save report] button
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Reboot to normal mode.

Post that Ewido log and another startdreck log. I also need you to zip up and attach the following files to your next post.

C:\WINDOWS\winstart.bat
C:\WINDOWS\tmpcpyis.bat

Did the registry file...fix your icon issue? Also..you didn't tell me if you had/have the game Midtown Madness??

I see your a "Cracker". Be aware most of these cracks contain virus/trojans/adware and this is were you are getting it from.

Download KillBox http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...re/KillBox.zip

Reboot into safe mode.

Open add/remove programs and remove these IF they are listed...

Altnet
MyWebSearch

D:\Hana Backup\Program Files\MyWebSearch <--delete that folder
D:\Hana Backup\Program Files\Altnet <--delete that folder

Run KILL box. Paste the following locations into KILL BOX one at a time. Checkmark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot.

D:\Download\NIS 2005\Norton.Internet.Security.2005.Pro.Incl.Keygen -SSG.rar/kgnis.exe
D:\Download DXB\Visio\KeyGen\VISIO 2002 KEY GENERATOR.exe
C:\WINDOWS\winstart.bat
C:\WINDOWS\tmpcpyis.bat

Once you reboot......

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm
Select the “Autofix/Clean” option and save the activescan log. Then post that log in your next post.

Please download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.

Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

I then need you to repeat the same procedure above again... using the TrendMicro tool. I need the log from the second scan/clean...NOT the first...as this will contain what’s left in the system

Post both those logs.

Hi,

Actually I gave up and decided to give my pc a new start. I backedup all of docs and imprtant stuff and afterwards I formatted the C drive and reinstalled XP with SP2. All my stuff is now back and the PC is running as fast as I first bought it.

Many thanks for your efforts and I really do appreciate what you have done to me
