Wrapperouter, seedcorn, uci - Help!

I cannot get rid of these! I've run AVG, CWShredder, Spybot, and Ad-Aware repeatedly and they just come back when I reboot. I've run all of these in safe mode with restore turned off, I've searched the registry and deleted things there, I've searched explorer item by item and deleted from there - nothing works. Can anyone please help me clean this laptop before I throw it out the window??

These always seem to be in System32, but sometimes in a temp folder as well.

It also drops various shortcuts to websites onto my desktop when I reboot. Kmart, Home Depot, XBox, just to name a few.

I've run Hijack This and then the Analyzer. The results.log is pasted below:

My System

And We're Back!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Notes
Its understandable that this would frustrate you, its regenerative...

Downloads
Download rkfiles and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.DO NOT RUN IT YET

Download remv3.zip Make a new folder on the root drive C:\ and unzip remv3.zip files into it. DO NOT RUN IT YET

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! and install it. DO NOT RUN IT YET

Download Killbox DO NOT RUN IT YET

View Hidden Files and Folders
Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Stop NT Service

Part1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the " WinTools for IE service (WinToolsSvc) " service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste the line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:
  • sc delete WinToolsSvc
  • Close the Command Prompt window

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsd16.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\richedtr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\PSof1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\richup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nmahll.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\glmstat.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hypaddin.exe

Boot Into Safe Mode
Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Stop Potentially Runnning Processes
Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\Program Files\Cas\Client\casclient.exe

Potential Uninstallations
Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

Cas
Free Popup Killer = foistware proven to install the Regsvc32 homepage hijacker

File/Folder Deletions

C:\Program Files\Free-Popup-Killer\
C:\Program Files\Cas\
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\

Run Downloaded Programs
Double click rkfiles.bat file to run it. It will scan for a while, so please be patient. Wait until the DOS window closes. Open the C:\log.txt it created and rename it log1.txt.

Now open the folder where you saved remv3.zip files and double click the rem.bat file and let it run. It will delete the files and remove the infection and then make a log of the files it finds. The log file will be C:\log.txt and bad1.txt

**Note** Each tool uses "log.txt" as it’s output file so make sure you save the entries from one tools log before running the other as it will overwrite the file if you don’t.

Run CleanUp! Set the program up as follows:
  • Click "Options..."
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Further Scanning
Please run a Scan at any 2 of the Following sites
Symantec/Norton
Trend Micro
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
F-Secure
Kaspersky

Make sure that you choose the "fix" or "clean" option when available

Please post a fresh Hijack This log, and post the contents of both the log.txt and log1.txt in your next post, so that we can check if your system is clean.

Last Scans

I attempted to run the following scans:

Symantec
Panda
F-Secure
Housecall

My laptop is a Toshiba and I'm lucky if it runs for an hour before automatically shutting off. Seems as though this is a common problem with this brand - something about the CPU overheating. I have it sitting on a fan made for that purpose, and that helps a bit, but not always.

As a result, I couldn't complete any of the scans, however I did make some notes of what they did find.

Panda had found 15 infected files before my computer shut down (13 of those were in the registry). Symantec had found 9. Upon rebooting, F-Secure found none and Housecall found four (3 Java.Bytever.B and 1 Java.Bytever.G), but again, my comptuer shut down before I could finish.

The good news is that with every reboot after the initial steps you gave me to clean my computer, there were no viruses found by my AVG like I usually see upon reboots.

I'll try scanning again in the morning - sometimes the laptop does better after resting overnight.

They're baaaack!

I've been working for about an hour now, and all seemed well, but just a second ago I got notification from AFG that Seedcorn, Uci and Wrapperouter.exe are all back. I chose the "heal" option for all three. Here is a HJT log.

When you run Remv3 make sure it finishes before you check the file (notepad will popup) and there should be several lines looking like this:

Quote:
The batch is run from -- C:\Documents and Settings\Skatepunk\Desktop

Files Found.................
----------------------------------------

Files Not deleted.................
----------------------------------------

Merging registry entries
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Registry Entries Found...
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Other bad files to be Manually deleted.. Please note that this might also list legit Files, be careful while deleting
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Volume in drive C has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 188C-EB32

Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

Finished
Have another go at it, and post back that log.

If it still doesnt work, dont worry, we have tricks up our sleeves yet...

And finally, here is the HJT analyzer log. I wasn't sure if you needed it again, or not.

My System

Downloads
Download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and install it. Update to the newest definitions. If you have trouble updating, you may do it manually at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ DO NOT RUN IT YET

Download Killbox

Run Downloaded Program #1
Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSof1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uci.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\seedcorn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\RMAgentOutput.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nmahll.exe

Boot Into Safe Mode
Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Run Downloaded Program #2
Next Run a "Complete System Scan" in Ewido. Save the log from the Ewido scan so that you can post it later.

Start HijackThis Fix
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\nmahll.exe reg_run

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Boot Back Into Normal Mode

Post:
1. Ewido Log
2. New HijackThis Log

How are things going now? Any problems??

My System

Sooooooo,
How are things?
If your computer still seems amiss, let me know Now!

One minor cleanup item

Start HijackThis Fix
Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
-- If you put this here, yourself, please just ignore this fix.--

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

And now, I just thought you should know that....

Your Log is Clean!!

System Restore

Turn off System Restore by Clicking Start > right-click My Computer and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab > Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this. Click OK.

Reboot your System.

Turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

Windows Updates

I Highly reccomend making the upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 1 & Service Pack 2. Since you're junkware free, the time to get them is NOW. These Service Packs are MAJOR upgrades for XP. Both are is chalk full of security patches and such, as well Service Pack 2 comes with a Free Popup Blocker!!!!!

Preventative Measures

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?.

Also Consider...
  • * SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
*SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
    * IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:

How is she running now? Any further problems? If not, Good work, and Happy Computing!
