PWSteal.Trojan!!! Please help!!!

Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me to remove my PWSteal.Trojan in C:\WINDOWS\system32\fgrcc.dll

The OS is Windows XP SP1. Nortons finds the infected file every time I boot up.

I have already tried turning off system restore and running nortons. However neither I nor Nortons can delete the file fgrcc.dll. Whenever I tried to delete fgrcc.dll, I get the message “Cannot delete fgrcc: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.”

Hi again tsae

As your log shows evidence of multiple infections it would be best if you were to run some online (and other) scans before anything else.

Please go through each of theses procedures.

CWSHREDDER

Download CWSShredder, extract the file, and run the program. Click the Fix button to remove any malicious programs found.

Download FixAgent and unzip it. Run FixAgent.exe. It should fix something. If nothing is fixed skip to the next step for the HijackThis fixes. If something is found, also download home_missing_114 here and unzip it. Run the Home winkey missing batch file.

Remember: ONLY run home_missing_114 if FixAgent found something.

AD-AWARE

Download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it.

Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results by reading this. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

ACTIVESCAN AND HOUSECALL

Do free on-line scans at Panda Activescan and Housecall. Housecall has now been upgraded to beta version 6.0 detect which removes both viruses and spyware that it finds. Make sure they both perform a full system scans and please use the “Autoclean” option when running Housecall.

When all these have been completed please rescan with HijackThis and post a new log so we can check your system again.

Hi OJ,

I have gone through each of these procedures as instructed by you.

(1) CWSHREDDER - Done
(2) FixAgent - Done and there was nothing to fix, so did not download home_missing_114.
(3) AD-AWARE – downloaded Ad-Aware Build 1.05, ran it and quarantined and removed infected files, but there are always new items to quarantine and remove each time I run it.
(4) Got the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants and ran it. It said, “Status System Clean”.
(5) TROJANHUNTER – Got the Unlicensed Evaluation Copy (Is that a fully working version?) and ran it. There are always new items to clean.
(6) Did free on-line full system scans at Panda Activescan and Housecall.

PWSteal.Trojan is still in C:\WINDOWS\system32\fgrcc.dll and my system is abit "retarded" now.

Well done, tsae. That was a lot of work. Log’s looking a mite cleaner now.

Trojanhunter – the trial version should indeed be “fully working” till the trial period expires. Use it as often as you like till then.

Panda Activescan & Housecall – you say you ran both scans but didn't mention the results. Did they both come up clean? Please let us know.

If either/both identified infections etc. they couldn’t fix please let us know what they were.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\fgrcc.dll – your log doesn’t show this particular . dll file. However, I’m not getting any information saying it’s “good” so I’m going to include the fix for it here anyway.

Hopefully you will have more luck removing it from safe mode.

On to the next stage.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.
Download CleanUp! by going here. Do not run it yet.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click “Kill process” for each one (You must kill them one at a time).

As before, please run ALL the free scans offered at these sites, make sure they both perform a full system scans and use the “Autoclean” option when running Housecall.

If any scans find something they still cannot fix - perhaps because the infected files are "in use" - please make a note of the file(s) concerned and post the details back to this thread.

Please post a fresh HijackThis log so that we can check if your system is clean.

Please also give us an update on how your system is operating now.

These are the steps that I have taken following your guidance:

(1) Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Hide protected operating system files option is unchecked.

(2) The following are not listed in process manager of HJT:

(3) Did not uninstall 137903, Blazefind and windupdates using Control Panel > Add/Remove Program because not listed.

(4) "Fixed checked" all the entries specified by you in HJT, but "F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe" reappears the next time I scan in HJT.

(5) Failed to delete fclls.exe and fgrcc.dll [message: Cannot delete ****:Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.] Deleted 137903 and ALCXMNTR.EXE. The file ljjpa.dll is not in the system.

(6) Downloaded and ran CleanUp!

As before, please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

It is vital you first fix this stubborn entry before moving on. It’s something new that’s only just come to light.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe

WARNING – Please go through the following procedure carefully. If not followed precisely you will NOT be able to log back on once you reboot.

You need to make sure that entry is gone from the log - and the file removed - before you reboot again.

If you are unsure of anything please do not continue but post your query to this thread. You must be perfectly clear on what needs to be done.

STAY IN NORMAL MODE; DO NOT GO TO SAFE MODE

1. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager.

2. Select the following and click 'Kill process' on this entry………..

C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe

3. Scan again with HijackThis [remember to STAY in normal mode this time]

4. Check the list of “Running processes” in the top part of the log. That process you have just “Ended” should not now be running.

5. Put a check/tick mark next to this entry in the log:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers, before clicking ”Fix checked”.

6. Delete the following File indicated in RED if it still exists:

C:\WINDOWS\system\fclls.exe

7. Please post another hijackthis log BEFORE you reboot.

If at all possible please do NOT reboot your system again until I have checked out the new log.

1. I went into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. The entry C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe is not in the list. It is instead in the Backup list.

I will have a look through this but, meanitme, can you tell me how your system is behaving now. Any improvements? Still having trouble anywhere or is it more back to normal now?

Feedabck from a user as to how a system "feels" can be very useful. Rather like a doctor asking how you feel when you and see him. It all helps the diagnosis.

Hi OJ,

The system is behaving better now. My Norton is not detecting PWSteal.Trojan, I ran Cwshredder, Fixagent, Ad-Aware and TrojanHunter and nothing was detected.

Seems like your "medicine" is working and the "patient" is feeling better now. Just hoping for full recovery. :)

All looks fine to me.

Now that you are clean please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Turn off System Restore by Clicking Start > right-click My Computer and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab > Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this. Click OK.

Reboot your System.

To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK.

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available.

However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use but often have malware in them.

Trojanhunter – the trial version should indeed be “fully working” till the trial period expires. Use it as often as you like till then. Panda Activescan & Housecall – you say you ran both scans but didn't mention the results. Did they both come up clean? Please let us know. If either/both identified infections etc. they couldn’t fix please let us know what they were. C:\WINDOWS\system32\fgrcc.dll – your log doesn’t show this particular . dll file. However, I’m not getting any information saying it’s “good” so I’m going to include the fix for it here anyway. Hopefully you will have more luck removing it from safe mode. On to the next stage. Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option. Download CleanUp! by going here. Do not run it yet. Reboot your system in Safe Mode (by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears). Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click “Kill process” for each one (You must kill them one at a time). Please go through each of theses procedures. CWSHREDDER Download CWSShredder, extract the file, and run the program. Click the Fix button to remove any malicious programs found. Download FixAgent and unzip it. Run FixAgent.exe. It should fix something. If nothing is fixed skip to the next step for the HijackThis fixes. If something is found, also download home_missing_114 here and unzip it. Run the Home winkey missing batch file. Remember: ONLY run home_missing_114 if FixAgent found something. AD-AWARE Download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results by reading this. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds. TROJANHUNTER Download Trojan hunter here……. http://trojanhunter.com/ ….scan your system with the (fully working) version and let it delete anything it finds. ACTIVESCAN AND HOUSECALL Do free on-line scans at Panda Activescan and Housecall. Housecall has now been upgraded to beta version 6.0 detect which removes both viruses and spyware that it finds. Make sure they both perform a full system scans and please use the “Autoclean” option when running Housecall. When all these have been completed please rescan with HijackThis and post a new log so we can check your system again. OJ

Hide protected operating system files option is unchecked. (2) The following are not listed in process manager of HJT: C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe (3) Did not uninstall 137903, Blazefind and windupdates using Control Panel > Add/Remove Program because not listed. (4) "Fixed checked" all the entries specified by you in HJT, but "F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe" reappears the next time I scan in HJT. (5) Failed to delete fclls.exe and fgrcc.dll [message: Cannot delete ****:Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.] Deleted 137903 and ALCXMNTR.EXE. The file ljjpa.dll is not in the system. (6) Downloaded and ran CleanUp! (7) Did online scans at Panda Activescan. It is vital you first fix this stubborn entry before moving on. It’s something new that’s only just come to light. F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe WARNING – Please go through the following procedure carefully. If not followed precisely you will NOT be able to log back on once you reboot. You need to make sure that entry is gone from the log - and the file removed - before you reboot again. If you are unsure of anything please do not continue but post your query to this thread. You must be perfectly clear on what needs to be done. STAY IN NORMAL MODE; DO NOT GO TO SAFE MODE 1. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. 2. Select the following and click 'Kill process' on this entry……….. C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe 3. Scan again with HijackThis [remember to STAY in normal mode this time] 4. Check the list of “Running processes” in the top part of the log. That process you have just “Ended” should not now be running. 5. Put a check/tick mark next to this entry in the log: F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe *Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers, before clicking ”Fix checked”.* 6. The entry C:\WINDOWS\System\fclls.exe is not in the list. It is instead in the Backup list. 2. In the list of “Running processes”, there is also no process involving fclls.exe running. My Norton is not detecting PWSteal.Trojan, I ran Cwshredder, Fixagent, Ad-Aware and TrojanHunter and nothing was detected. Seems like your "medicine" is working and the "patient" is feeling better now. Just hoping for full recovery. :)

Now that you are clean please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure: Turn off System Restore by Clicking Start > right-click My Computer and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab > Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this. Click OK. Reboot your System. To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click Apply, and then OK. This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use but often have malware in them.
