Help with topsearch10

I noticed you were lending help for problems with topsearch10. I have the same problem as I cannot access google.com and google.ca sites. I was wondering if you could lend me some help now, too. Muchly appreciated. Here's my log:

I've been noticing that you're instructing everyone to disconnect from the internet. How can I do that safely when I'm on a LAN that's connected 24/7? (I'm a beginner, of course). Thanks again.

I unbderstand you're on a LAN, but you should be able to operate the system as a standalone, which includes rebooting the computer into Safe Mode. If you cant log on in Safe Mode, select the option to log on in Safe Mode with Networking.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download Hoster http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe and run it. Choose the 'Restore Original Hosts' button and press OK.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

MessengerPlus! 3 - This program comes with Sponsor software. If you know for sure you didn't install the sponsor spoftware - ignore all fixes below, and dont uninstall.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

You are running HiJackThis from an inappropriate location. It should be run from a permanent folder. This program creates backup files which we may need to use later. If the program is in a temporary folder, important backups may be accidentally deleted.

Please go into Windows Explorer
Click on C:\
Click on File > New > Folder
Call it HJT, or another name of your choice.
Move all files to the newly created folder.

Enable the viewing of Hidden files

Click Start.

Locate and delete the following folder(s), if present:

Do an online scan at one of the following sites:

Take note the names and locations of any file it detects but fails to clean.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Reboot & Run a new scan with HiJackThis. Save the log file and run KRC HiJackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in your next reply.

As well, I went on to start a virus scan from panda, but it was halfway done and there was no way I could stay awake. I shall finish the scan tomorrow. When I did terminate it, it was a bit over half and 2 were not disinfected. Full details when completed. Thanks again.

Delete this folder - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Totem Shared\

Your log is clean.
Do you have any more problems with your computer? If not, you should be set to go.

However, there still remains a few bits of housekeeping ...

Reset hidden/system files and folders

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Follow the instructions outlined here to clear Java's cache.

Create a new System Restore point

click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
select the System Restore Tab
tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
click Apply
then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Automatic Updates
tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:

and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

If you cant log on in Safe Mode, select the option to log on in Safe Mode with Networking. Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Download Hoster http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe and run it. Choose the 'Restore Original Hosts' button and press OK. Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Open My Computer. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View tab. Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option. Select the Hide file extensions for known types option. Select the Hide protected operating system files option. Click Yes to confirm. Click OK. Follow the instructions outlined here to clear Java's cache.
