Hello davman01

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Download the newest version at http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/HijackThis.exe and run it.

Before you give us a new log here, if we gave you instructions for a fix, please do the fixes first and then post the new log with this updated version.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the HijackThis log here.

Download ET Remover and unzip it.
Do NOT run it yet, must be in Safe Mode

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run ETRemover.exe

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O2 - BHO: &EliteBar - {28CAEFF3-0F18-4036-B504-51D73BD81ABC} - C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar\EliteToolBar version 60.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\elitenfw32.exe

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar
C:\windows\system32\elitenfw32.exe

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here. So we may continue.

Herk: Thanks for the quick response.

Have downloaded the new HiJackThis and ETRemover.

1. After running ET Remover (also in safe mode), none of the O2 or O4 items showed up in the HiJackThis log. The only thing left was the file at c:\windows\system32\elitenfw32.exe. Deleted that.

When searching for that file to delete, however, found two additional files with similar names and creation dates in the same location. They are elitegdi32.exe and eliteicr32.exe,. Wondering if these should be deleted also. ??

2. Here is the new HiJack this log.

I will not analyze the above log fully, yet.

I think it's important to get a virus scan done now, so we can get all viruses on one go.

Please run an online virus scan at Panda ActiveScan. Save the results and bring them with you in your next post.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Do not run it yet!

Please download ETRemover.zip

WARNING!! This tool should be run from safe mode only. It will not be able to delete files in use by Windows, so running it from a regular windows session is useless. A readme is included with complete details on the tool and the malware it removes.

Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Highlight al of the below in BOLD. Copy [CTRL + C] and Paste [CTRL + V] the following into KillBox. Hit X when done and reboot when asked, as we will need to go into Safe Mode next.

As the computer reboots, tap the F8 key repeatedly, and choose Safe Mode from the menu.

Run ETRemover Now!!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
    [X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

WARNING - CleanUp! will delete all files and folders contained within Temporary Directories. If you knowingly have items you would liek to keep stored in these locations, Move them now!!!

Reboot back to Normal Mode and run a new HJT scan. Bring the results back to the forum in your next post.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click 'Kill process' for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check):

C:\windows\system32\twugck.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

PacerD_Media/Pacimedia.com

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Video Multimedia Driver] ndrives32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSof1] C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSof1.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cfgmgr52] RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll,DllRun
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe] C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [twugck] c:\windows\system32\twugck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Video Multimedia Driver] ndrives32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Video Multimedia Driver] ndrives32.exe
O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/D.../bridge-c10.cab
O16 - DPF: {972BB342-14A7-4660-83C1-51DDBEE171DB} - http://www.pacimedia.com/install/pcs_0002.exe

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\windows\system32\twugck.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSof1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll

ndrives32.exe
<Search and delete

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Please run an online virus scan at Panda ActiveScan. Save the results and bring them with you in your next post.

Did the deletions and HiJackThis fixes as outlined.

cfgmgr52.dll seems to have been fixed but left behind a folder named cfgmgr52 containing several .bsx files. I renamed the folder xxxcfgmgr52 and left it in place. Should I simply delete it and contents as well?

Here are today's Panda and HiJack This! scan reports.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

Please download CCleaner via this website: http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp

When you have installed it, click on the Registry tab and then click Scan for issues. When it has finished scanning click Fix selected issues.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
    [X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

WARNING - CleanUp! will delete all files and folders contained within Temporary Directories. If you knowingly have items you would liek to keep stored in these locations, Move them now!!!

Reboot, rescan with HJT and post back.

Run a scan with HiJackThis & select(tick) the following & click [Fix checked] :

N3 - Netscape 7: user_pref("browser.search.defaultengine", "engine://C%3A%5CProgram%20Files%5CNetscape%5CNetscape%206%5 Csearchplugins%5CSBWeb_01.src"); (C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\w5lk2kuo.slt\prefs.j s)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When your done, rescan your system and make sure the following isn't present:
N3 - Netscape ... 5CSBWeb_01.src (or) 5CSBWeb_02.src
If it is, then fix that entry again; sometimes it'll take more than one pass. The actual entry is ok, and won't be deleted, it's the java wrapper marked in red that needs to be removed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Reboot & post a fresh log.
Update us on how the computer is behaving

davman01, what happened to your updated version of HJT?

You were providing us with logs scanned with version 1.99.1
Your last scan results were from v1.98.0

Please ensure all HJT scans are done with the latest version.

are legit. Leave them be.

Well done. Your logs are clean. Any more issues? If not you should be good to go. We still have a few more items to address so please follow the instructions below.

  • Click the Start button.
  • Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.

Please visit Microsoft's Window's Update Page and install the latest service packs, patch’s and security updates for your system.

Recommended Protection Programs

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
  • WinPatrol to monitor any changes that programs make to the registry.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:
In light of your recent issue, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
Please stay safe out there and take the helpful advice that’s been given. The goal here is to prevent the adware/spyware/virus/worms from getting on the system in the first place.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
