Well done!! We got most of them on the first pass. Anyway..I need you to empty your recycle bin manually. Then navigate to C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and delete ALL files in that folder.
Let's make sure this service has been disabled... . Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok Scroll down and find the service called: Mouse Hardware Sync (mousehs) When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. Run hijackthis and fix this entry... O23 - Service: Mouse Hardware Sync (mousehs) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mousehs.exe (file missing) Then close hijackthis. Reboot back into safe mode Open hijackthis again...and click config..misc tools..and open the "Delete an NT Service" When the box pops up..put this in it..mousehs and then click OK. Reboot back to normal mode and post another log. If PestPatrol is unfuctional and out of date...remove it via add/remove programs. It's not very usefull if it's not kept fully updated.

mousehs
followed your directions, but since i did not perform the 3rd one the attempt to get rid of mousehs has failed.
1. recycle bin. I deleted all files manually. 2. C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch. I deleted all files manually. 3. Start->Run "Services.msc". "Mouse Hardware Sync (muosehs)" was not listed thus i didn't disabled item. On the other hand, please note that "Mouse Hardware Sync" was listed --- but i didn't disable it out of fear that it represents the genuine mouse. 4. hijackthis. 023 - Service: Mouse Hardware Sync (mousehs)... when i click fix it the screen goes blank, and when i scan anew it is still there. in other words, hijackthis is not fixing mousehs! 5. Reboot,SafeMode...hijackthis...config...misc tools..."delete an NT service" when pressing ok a message alerts that deletion could not be executed since mousehs is ENABLED (and obviously my repeated attempts to disable it have failed). what shall i do? |

muosehs...rdriv...aim.exe
thanks for all your help thus far.
while i am waiting for your response concerning mousehs, i would like to mention that rdriv is gone from the registry and system32. In that connection i would like to ask about the apparent cause fro rdriv (ie: C:\WINDOWS\aim.exe -> Trojan.Rootkit.k). So, is it safe to use aim.exe (used by my daughter) and would it be alright to reinstall aim? if the answer is yes, what precaution i must take to prevent rdriv from resurfacing? i would appreciate your response, thanks gil |

Ok...your confusing me abit...so lets try to answer your questions...
You said this service wasn't listed...Mouse Hardware Sync (muosehs) But you said this service was....Mouse Hardware Sync It's the same service minus the (muosehs) If that service points to this file (and I'm betting it does) C:\WINDOWS\System32\mousehs.exe then follow my instructions to disable and remove it. There is no LEGIT Mouse Hardware Sync service in windows XP. The service must be STOPPED and DISABELED before we can remove it. So once thats done..use hijackthis "Delete an NT Service" button and try putting both these in the box as the service name again.. Mouse Hardware Sync muosehs If that doesn't work...try this. Click start...run....type in CMD. Once the DOS box opens...type cd c:\ Your prompt should look like this.. c:\> Now type sc delete Mouse Hardware Sync If that doesn't work then type sc delete muosehs **Note** If this fails we will have to remove it manually through the registry. As for Aim..you can reinstall it if you want, That entry and file we removed has NOTHING to do with the legit AIM program. The bad guy just names the file..same as the legit file to avoid detection. Once complete..post another hijackthis log...and the log from the following tool... Download GetServices http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file...etservices.zip Unzip the files to a folder on your desktop. Open that folder and run the getservices.bat file. It will produce a log when it's complete. Post the contents of that log in your next post.

The mousehs is gone. Dead & buried.
Let's bury that redundant messanger entry as well. Start HiJackThis & go to Config>Misc.Tools>Delete an NT service.... In the popup box that appears, type in AIM & click the "OK" button. Your log is clean. Do you have any more problems with your computer? If not, you should be set to go. However, there still remains a few bits of housekeeping ... Reset hidden/system files and folders
Create a new System Restore point
Enable Windows Auto Update
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated. In light of your recent hiccup, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles Have a safe & happy computing day. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

rdriv,mousehs
thanks for you quick response
here is my response for your directions: 1. hijackthis...config...misc tools... delete an NT serice..."AIM" - deleted. 2. reset hidden/system files & folders setting was already where you suggested to set it at, so i kept things as they were: a. don't show hidden files & folders b. hide file extensions for known types c. hide protected operating system files 3. create a new system restore point. created as directed. 4. Enable windows autoupdate. setting was already where you suggested to set it at, so i kept things as they were. 5. already have spywareblaster and spywareguard. unsuccessfullytried to install iespy-ad...will have to try again later on. 6. i have symantec firewall and antivirus applications in place.

Good to see that you buried the misdirected AIM
With IE-Adspy, double click on each reg file to merge it individually.
