Another unstoppable popups problem

Another case of crazy unstoppable popups even when IE not in (voluntary) usage, often to loadingwebsite.com, also to e.g. net-offers.net, qckjmp.com, etc. Initial tries at self-help found several problems identified in Spybot or adaware, including Addestroyer, Conducent, DyFuCA, Delfin Project, Look2Me, Zestyfind. Attempts at removal (many)did not succeed in stopping the popups. Many of these now open but point to a page that cannot be accessed. Some (e.g. to certified-safe-downloads.com) still pop up normally. Some of the popups intially ran Windows Media content, incluiding audio without any visible sign of where it was coming from. That is no longer happening.

Present is a DLL in Winlogon Notify that keeps re-creating itself, with different names. (I have tried deleting the file on reboot in HijackThis, but it still recreates with a new name.)

Also, even on a fresh boot, opening My Computer is VERY slow -- takes upward of 60 seconds for the flashlight to go away.

Here's the HijackThis log file:

Please do the following:

L2mfix - Download & Save to Desktop

This is a self extracting file. By double clicking on it, it will automatically extract it's contents to a new folder on Desktop.
  1. Double click L2mfix.exe.
  2. When prompted, answer "Accept"
  3. Then click the "Install" button to extract the files to a newly created folder named - L2mfix
  4. Open the L2mfix folder & double click L2mfix.bat
  5. Select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing "1" and pressing Enter.
This will scan your computer and it may appear as if nothing is happening for a period of few minutes. When it has finished, you will be presented with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Close all open programs

From the L2mfix folder on your desktop, double click L2mfix.bat
  • Select option #2 for Run Fix by typing "2" and then press enter
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, you will be presented with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it here, along with a new HJT log.

Please Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are told to

None of those anti-spyware programs are installed. Ran HJT and removed items as directed. Trend Micro found: In virus scan, TROJ_DLOADER.OT and TROJ_SMALL.ZI. Both resulted in messages stating they were uncleanable but could be deleted, and I directed the program to do so, giving message at end of "deletion successful." Many DataMiners found and deleted. Also found under Spyware were ADW_SIDESEARCH.A and SPYW_CHILDCO.653. Removal of both was confirmed.

And HijackThis says:

Your log is clean. Well done
Do you have any more problems with your computer? If not, you should be set to go.

However, there still remains a few bits of housekeeping ...

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Create a new System Restore point
  • click Start >> Run - type SYSDM.CPL & press Enter
  • select the System Restore Tab
  • tick on the checkbox - "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
  • click Apply
  • then untick the same checkbox & click OK

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Automatic Updates
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify".
  • Click on "OK".

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

In light of your recent hiccup, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
Have a safe & happy computing day.

Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.

To say I'm grateful is an understatement -- and I'll be looking for the donations area of the site tonight. The only problem on the computer is that something in the cleaning hosed MS Works, and I can easily reinstall that.

(I'll be following every recommendation to avoid this happening again save perhaps one, and I need to ask about that one. The kids use this computer. One of them is disabled and must use a certain program related to his disability for homework that, unfortunately, will not work with XP SP2 installed, and there is no update to the program yet. Does auto-update install SP2 automatically? If it does, I'll select the notify of updates option and check weekly to install any updates that aren't SP2.)

Thanks again!

Sorry but there was a step which I've neglected to include..

Please double click L2mfix.bat
  • Select option #4 to "Merge Winlogon Notify Defaults" by typing "4" and then press enter
  • Type "E" to exit the program.

You may delete the L2MFix folder after that.

With regards to Auto Update, you may select an alternate arrangement..

Enable Windows Auto Update
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Automatic Updates
  • tick on the checkbox - "Keep my computer up to date"
  • Under settings, choose "Notify me but dont automatically download or install them".
  • Click on "OK".
