Serious Problem with Malware/Pop-Ups
First, let me say, I'm new to this site, and you guys provide an amazing service. Thanks in advance for your help.
Here's the situation. A few days ago my wife was doing multiple things on the computer and internet. A pop-up window came up asking if she want to install something, and she clicked Yes because she thought that the window was legitimate. Since then we have had constant pop-ups regardless of whether we're connected to the internet. I've run SpyBot S&D, Ad-Aware, and Norton AntiVirus (all of which are up-to-date). Each time I run them they find and delete/quarantine problems, but the pop-ups continue. The same problems that were found and repaired are back when I run the program again. This is when I realized that I need help. Also, I'm not sure if this is related or not, but there is a suspicious folder on my C: drive. The name of the folder is "597d4640ebcee7a64158". It contains files "helpctr.exe", "spmsg.dll", "spuninst.exe" and folders "download" and "update". When I try to access or delete the files or folders, I get a message that Access is denied. This is a home computer so I should have access to everything. Even if I start the computer in Safe Mode and log in as Administrator, I still don't have access. Anyway, I've followed all of the instruction in the sticky "Please, Read This Before Posting A Hijackthis Log." I've configured Ad-Aware as instructed and run it. I quarantined what it found, but that did not solve the problem. I rebooted and run the online Virus Scan at the link provided. It did not find anything. Next I disconnected from the internet and closed all programs except Norton AntiVirus 2005. I ran HijackThis. Then I ran the HijackThis Analyzer to get the "new" log. This log is posted below. Again, I know that you guys are very busy and I greatly appreciate the help. Thanks in advance for helping me to solve this problem. Hi and Welcome to TSF
Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log….. Please go to at least two of these sites and run an online Virus Scan. Be sure to have the AutoFix box(es) checked. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/d...d=ie&venid=sym http://www3.ca.com/virusinfo/virusscan.aspx Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Please make sure system restore is enabled by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn OFF System Restore and make sure it’s NOT checked. We want system restore ON and monitoring your current hard drive. Once your clean we will turn this off and then create a new restore point. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Open add/remove programs and remove the following if listed. tvs (BroadcastPC) WildTangent MarketBrowser MarketBrowser= This monitors your internet browseing habits and reports back to their servers. If you want to keep this..ignor it's removal instructions below. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations: http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot. From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log. IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

MicroBell, Thanks for the help so far
MicroBell,
Thanks for the help you've provided so far. I followed all of the instructions. I haven't had any pop-ups since I've completed the steps, which is great. I did notice that some of the HijackThis entries that I deleted are back when I ran the program again. Is this normal? ... bad? Anyway, the L2mfix log and the new HijackThis log (after being run through the Analyzer) are below. Thanks again for the help. Is there anything more that I need to do? Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe.
Reboot to Safe Mode. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot): C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wtta.exe Run HJT and fix the following item: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Notn] C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\wtta.exe Reboot the computer back to Normal Mode. Rescan with HJT. If the item still exists - fix it now, make sure to rescan if you do. Post the results in your next post.

Your log is clean. Well done
Do you have any more problems with your computer? If not, you should be set to go. However, there still remains a few bits of housekeeping ... Reset hidden/system files and folders
Create a new System Restore point
Enable Windows Auto Update
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated. In light of your recent hiccup, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles Have a safe & happy computing day. Please respond to this thread one more time so we can mark this thread as resolved.
