Popups That Won't Go Away

A couple of weeks ago I was unfortunate enough to visit a site that downloaded a bunch of spyware onto my computer. I've tried everything--I've run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot: Search and Destroy, AdWare Alert, McAfee Anti-Virus, and Microsoft AntiSpyware. Plus I've tried to manually look at the registry.

I've gotten rid of a lot of spyware, but I still have annoying popups that are more frequent when I'm in IE but appear even when IE is not running. Please, I could use your help!

Here's my HijackThis log:

hmmm.....try deleting your system restore and see if that works. what you need to do is to right click -> my computer -> click on properties -> click on system restore and disable system restore. then reboot the computer and boot into windows again. then turn system restore back on and then scan your computer with adware SE, spybot, and mcafee again.

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Before you follow the above instructions, let's do a little manual cleaning. We'll deal with system restore at the end.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

===============

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?nspool.exe <- winspool is a legit file, so don't get them confused

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Awyxbo] C:\WINDOWS\System32\w?nspool.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.slotchbar.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.slotchbar.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted IP range: 67.19.185.246

O16 - DPF: {9FC87BC7-7963-4B70-8485-B1A41034C9A1} (CSonyPicturesGameDownloaderCtl Object) - http://www.shockwave.com/content/an...eDownloader.cab
O16 - DPF: {AB29A544-D6B4-4E36-A1F8-D3E34FC7B00A} - http://install.wildtangent.com/bgn/...kII/install.cab

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: ju1n63dz774o.dll

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

Search for...

ju1n63dz774o.dll

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Post back a new log, and let us know how everything goes.

First of all, thank you for your help. I'm sorry that I originally posted this to the wrong forum--I learned about this forum while searching in google to find info on the spyware I was infected with, so I didn't know where to post at first. This forum is an amazing resource and I can't thank you enough.

I did everything suggested on this thread so far. The only problem I ran into was that I got a Error #52 Bad File Name or Number when trying to remove one of the HiJackThis entries. Nonetheless all the pop-ups seem to be gone, so I'm happy. :)

Here's my new log file:

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

Reboot your computer, and try using different programs and make sure everything is running ok. If your still experiencing problems, post back any concerns or problems you may be having and wait for any advice before continuing with the cleanup.

===============

Download, install and run Cleanup! from Steven Gould, then:

1. Click "Cleanup!"

(wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)

2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.

-

For more information about using Cleanup! see here.

===============

Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system point manually.

===============

Let us know if your system is behaving normally.
