Think I've been HIjacked, please could you help?
Hello there. Could someone just check my log as I think I have been hijacked. I have run latest versin of Spybot and Adware but both claim I'm clean. But I still get pop ups etc, so something is a miss!! I have also run pestpatrol and the results are clean!!! Many thanks,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then: 1. Click "Check For Update" (If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.) 2. Click "Click here to Download the upate". 3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save". 4. Turn off System Restore Click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. Now reenable system restore. This will prevent any reinfection from any previous restore points. |

Yes, this is peculiar. When I try to download from a site (connected via broadband), a pop up comes up. Then when I try to get rid of pop up my internet connection appears to drop and I cannot download my emal messages or connect to google (althopugh under Network Settings, BT broadband it says I am connected). I then close all programs, turn computer off, unplug modem, leave 3 mins, re plug in modem and turn on computer again. When I try to connect back onto the internet a Message appears: Error 31 "A device attached to the system is not functioning", I then try redial and, vola, I'm connected. If I then go back to the page to try the download, the same thing happens. I can't work out whats wrong especially as HJT log is clean? It may have something to do with your particular ISP. Did you recently change to Freeserve?
Let's double check for anything that may be lurking: In case you got rid of Mwav: Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool. Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3) 1. Save it to a folder. 2. Reboot into Safe Mode. 3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything. 4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane. 5. In the Virus Log Information Pane...... Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file *Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files. Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here. |

Ok, there was nothing to purge in SPybot but I clicked on the button anyway just in case:-) I tried downloading mway from the link, in your previous post but for some reason the mway.exe is blank I just get a black window. However I still had mway installed in a folder, from the last time I had a problem, so I ran that instead. There was nothing found. I've done a little research and looked at the symantec website where it reports something called a flush trojan (there are several different types Flush A, Fulsh B etc..) this trojan "modifies your DNS settings." - eek I'm sure it is something to do with the 017 entry in the HJT log: somewhere in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters..... There are several entries under adapters subheading such as .. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Adapters\{5051DAE1-81AB-4127-97C1-DDFA14F49FF0} HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Adapters\NdisWanIp trouble is I don't know what it all means??!! I also tried to run another pest patrol scan in internet explorer and firefox but that message comes up in both browsers "You must be using Internet Explorer with your security settings set to allow ActiveX controls to use the Pest Scan " I had problems with this before. Is it the virus, stopping me from accessing the program? Any ideas Faith

Sorry I forgot to answer ur question.
My freeserve isn't recent. I was using freeserve when I was on dial up. But then had bt broadband installed. I use thunderbird as my mail client and just confugured it to accept emails from my old freeserve address. I haven't been paying Freeserve as I have moved to BT broadband but thunderbird still seems to connect to their address. To be honest I'm not sure why. I'm not sure how or if I should remove Freeserve. Faith |

How about an online scan?
If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan. Does it find anything?

damn virus
Unfirtunately, the virus is stopping me from doing any scans, either housecall or panda!!! I've tried in internet explorer and firefox. I get this message when trying to do a scan with panda:
Possible causes of this error are: Not allowing the application's ActiveX control to be downloaded. Problems with the Internet connection. Other causes (consult the FAQs). 017 in the hjt log keeps turning up too, even if I delete them then follow your instructions for system restore. The virus has also deactivated my AVG settings and I don't knbow how to reconfigure them. THis is soi frustrating as I have installed spybot, adware, cwshredder and AVG and spyblaster and guard. I have been able to run house call which idenbtified the virus: BKDR_ROBOBOT.GEN
and I have reinstaled AVG and updates virus definitions. However, I still can't sus out where this trojan is hiding in the registry. There is an entry under the folowing that is a bit odd HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Winsock a nd in the right panel is this: HelperdllName REG_EXPEND_SZ_%systemroot%\system 32\wshtcpip.dll Could this be it? Hi faith,
Did TendMicro give you any details such as where it's located? Open up HijackThis and go to Config->Misc Tools and check the first two boxes there. Now click on the 'Generate StartupList log' button. Post that log in your next post. Right click on http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (ex: Ad-Watch, TeaTimer, Norton, etc.). Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. This will take a few minutes. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post. |

Unforunately Trend Micro didn't give me details. Well, all I could see was C:\documents and settings, which doesn't really narrow it down much. I've tried pestpatrol, panda and trend micro again, but the same thing happens I get that message about activex. I sent in previous posts. I'm not seeing anything there either. Do you have access to another PC? If you do, download the following and burn it to a CD, then install on your PC from the CD:
Download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and install it. See if you're able to update to the newest definitions from your PC (probably not) but run the scan anyway and let's see if it finds anything. |

I have just been able to update ewdiw, so will do another scan and send it here. Unfortunately, when I try to locate the virus in the C:\docs and settings\all users e etc, the file is no where to be seen??
