need some help - confused

Thanks for taking the time to read this, i'm new here.
Usually i can fend for myself against damaging spyware/trojans, but i'm stuck after trying a bunch of things.
there is an annoying startup program "NMU.exe" that i can't seem to get rid of, no matter how many times i take it off MSconfig.
The same program also shows up in my HijackThis log, and also keeps returning no matter how many times i fix it.
My ad-aware SE couldn't detect anything, i also tried running Stinger, and RAV online anti-virus - all couldn't detect anything.
The only program that was able to pick up numerous things was Spyware Blaster, but even after fixing all of it - this annoying "NMU.exe" is still around.
If the log of objects destroyed from using Spyware Blaster would help, please let me know and i could post it.

This is very annoying, so please any help you can give would be appreciated.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure to update Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.c...t.aspx?ln=en-us.

Your log is clean.

Turn off System Restore by Clicking Start > right-click My Computer and then click
Properties. Click the System Restore tab > Check
"Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be
deleted. Click Yes to do this. Click OK.

Reboot your System.

To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click
Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck
"Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives."
Click Apply, and then OK.

Hello again,

I thought everything was alright after i performed the fixes you requested -
but i turned on my computer today and it seems that everything has not been fixed.

When i posted the first time, i did not mention that recently i have been having extra IEXPLORER.exe process popping up for no reason.
I didn't mention this because i thought my ad-aware or spyware blaster had picked it up and fixed it, and since the task pops up at odd times i thought it had been eliminated.

However, today it is back. It seems to just be an extra IEXPLORER.exe process that loads by itself, even after killing the process.
Once again, ad-aware or spyblaster do not pick this up.
I ran another Hijack This scan, and the only suspicius things that i can see are that:
1) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wmplayer] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe
it was not there during the last scan but i'm not sure if that is a problem
2)O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com
this has come back even though it was gone yesterday.
I do not have system restore on so this doesn't make any sense.

Having more than one instance of explorer running is not at all unusual, as some programs link to it and will keep their own instance of it running. If there are no other problems, I would consider yourself AOK.

(BTW, I have seen four and five instances of explorer running, before, depending on what other programs are up).

The only reason i'm worried about this, is that this extra IEXPLORER.exe process never happened until a few days ago when i noticed the other problems i posted the first time.
I see no reason for it to suddenly continuing to pop up, as i haven't installed any new programs recently.

However, if you don't think it is a serious issue i guess i am okay with it.
Except the trusted site www.neededware.com keeps coming back and wmplayer starts up even though i keep trying to fix them with HJT.

Anyway, if it looks okay then let me know and i will stop worrying.
Otherwise, the previous HJT log i posted is still the same.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Cleanup.exe ) and install it. We will use this later.

greyknight17: i uploaded both programs and nothing came up.

blackduck30: i've done what you asked more than once, because i thought i might have messed it up. but the fact is that both wmplayer.exe and the www.neededware.com keep showing up in my HJT, no matter how many times i eliminate them.

Cleanup!, Aw-aware, or Spyblaster fail to pick anything up, both regular and safe mode.

i have been noticing that windows media player automatically starts up when i load windows, even though i take it off the startup using msconfig.
Also, the IEXPLORER.exe keeps coming up, even though im not using any program that requires it. It's not a case of multiple windows, it just seems to be loading by itself.
The tricky thing is that i keep thinking it is fixed because it goes away for awhile, and then some time later i will run HJT and they will have come back - and IEXPLORER.exe starts loading by itself again.
I haven't noticed anything terrible from this happening, it is just very annoying and perplexing.

I think it would be a waste to post the HJT log because after i fix the problems, it looks like they have been eliminated, and then at a random time later i will run HJT again and they will have come back.

Please upload this file...C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe to http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus and scan it. Post your findings.

This looks like Troj/Psyme-AT trojan. If it is.....it replaces the wmplayer.exe (which is legit) with it's own wmplayer.exe (which is the trojan)

Thanks for the help.

The antivirus site picked up a trojan, and i deleted the file.
However, the symptoms are still around so i don't know what else to do.

The other site still didn't detect anything in IEXPLORER.exe or wmplayer.exe.

I ran an ad-aware and cleanup! scan and it seemed to eliminate the problems.
Everything seems to be in order now, but the effects of the trojan were spontaneous so i am still unsure.

But for now, everything is back to normal - i really appreciate all the help.

Your log is clean.

Turn off System Restore by Clicking Start > right-click My Computer and then click
Properties. Click the System Restore tab > Check
"Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be
deleted. Click Yes to do this. Click OK.

Reboot your System.

To turn on System Restore by Clicking Start. Right-click My Computer, and then click
Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Uncheck
"Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives."
Click Apply, and then OK.
