Internet Explorer Freezes
Hello, can anyone help me. I have a problem with my IE it logs onto the internet ok but when I click on any link on a website it feezes and won't respond.

Hello, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Download, unzip to your desktop CWShredder and run it, then:

1. Click "Check For Update"

(If an update isn't available, skip to step #4.)

2. Click "Click here to Download the upate".
3. When the new version has been downloaded, click "Save".
4. Click "Fix ->"

Download, then unzip to "C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.1. Then repost your log, either now, or after following the steps in the solution (if provided in this post). This version has features that might be more helpful in 'cleaning' up your system.

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u System32:thaa.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

...using "Start | Search...".

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

Thanks for your help. I have carried out the tasks and below is my new log file. I stll get a programme wanting to eneter my startup menu - picked up by Spy Sweeper it is called ipba.exe.

Any further thoughts?

Please update your version of hijackthis (link in my signature) and post another log. My guess here is you have a bad service adding the files back...but the current version of HJT your using dosn't display services.

Also post the following log along with that hijackthis log...

Download Silent runners.Vbs http://www.silentrunners.org/
1. Make sure you have any script blocking software disabled
2. Run the program. It will take a few minutes to complete.
3. Once complete it will produce a log named “StartupPrograms” with Your user and date in the filename. Open that txt file and posts it contents in your next post.

Right-click and select..... Save Target As

To use: Right-click and select....... Install (no need to restart)
**Note** This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone"

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Please make sure system restore is enabled by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn OFF System Restore and make sure it’s NOT checked. We want system restore ON and monitoring your current hard drive. Once your clean we will turn this off and then create a new restore point.

NOw run the cleanup utility and reboot/logoff when prompted.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers.


Go to Start->Run and type Services.msc then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called: Network Security Service ( 11Fßä#·şÄÖ`I)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.


Click START…RUN…Type in regedit. Make sure just “My Computer” is showing in the left pane and click..FILE….EXPORT…and save a copy some were in case you make a mistake. Now navigate to each of the following keys and delete the file/folder/entry I highlighted in RED

Close regedit

Run KILL box. Paste the following locations into KILL BOX one at a time. Checkmark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot.

Once you reboot..post another hijackthis log and silentrunners log along with the logs from the tools below....

UNZIP the contents to a permanent folder on your desktop.

Download the following attachment remv3.zip http://forums.skads.org/index.php?showtopic=80
Make a folder on the root drive C:\ and unzip the files into it.

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE… These tools MUST be run in safe mode!!
Once in safe mode…

Double click rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the dos window closes.
Open the C:\log.txt it created and rename it log1.txt.

Now Open the folder were you saved remv3.zip files and click the rem.bat file and let it run. It will delete the files and remove the infection and then make a log of the files it finds. The log file will be C:\log.txt and bad1.txt

**Note** Each tool uses log.txt as it’s output file so make sure you save the entry’s from one tool before running the other as it will overwrite the file if you don’t.

Reboot back to normal mode and post the contents of both the log.txt and log1.txt in your next post.

The Nav issue may or maynot be related to this infection. Anyway...we still got some cleaning to do....

Download Hoster http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe

Run the cleanup utility and reboot/logoff when prompted. Reboot back into safe mode.

Run hijackthis and fix the following entrys...

Now run the hoster program and select "Restore Hosts File"

Run KILL box. Paste the following locations into KILL BOX one at a time. Checkmark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot.

Once rebooted post another hijackthis and Rkfiles logs..and the log from the following tool....

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus, empty your recycle bin and purge/delete all recovery items in the spybot program if you use it…BEFORE!!! running this tool.

Download this virus checker and tool from eScan Mwav.exe (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into safe mode
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file.(This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything)
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, press SCAN and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane (Bottom Window)
Left click and Highlight all the info in the Lower pane--- Use "CTRL C" on your Keyboard to copy all found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file. DO NOT post the log from the “View Log” button as that log does NOT contain the info we are after.

*Note* If prompted that a Virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning.

We are not going to use this to remove anything..but to ID the bad guys.

Once you copy that to a notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here along with a new hijackthis log.

Howdy!

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\Documents and Settings\John\My Documents\Studio9PixieContentFix.zip
C:\Documents and Settings\John\My Documents\Studio9PixieProgramFix.zip
C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 9\OEM\hfx55StudioUpdate.exe

Then navigate to and delete:

C:\Documents and Settings\John\My Documents\Studio9PixieContentFix.zip
C:\Documents and Settings\John\My Documents\Studio9PixieProgramFix.zip
C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 9\OEM\hfx55StudioUpdate.exe

You can leave those files listed above alone if you so desire...as they are part of the Pinnacle Studio 9 package. That said...use KILLBOX again and remove this file..

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cm2.exe

The rest of the logs look good.

Hello,

I have deleted the cm2 file but left the Pinnacle files as they are. The mwav log is below and it has not picked up any specific viruses I think. It ran for longer this time I may have inadvertently stopped it early last time. There appear to be some viruses stored in a Hijackthis back up and some system restore points, would it be a good idea to delete all this and then do a new restore point assuming that my machine is now clean, what do you think?

the NAV issue I mentioned earlier is still there but I looked at the symantec website and this is a common issue and the site gives a number of fixes culminating with and uninstall and reinstall which I will do as their suggested other fixes didn't work!

There are some baddies hiding in the system restore folder. Please do this:

Disable, then re-enable system restore; with a reboot in-between. Then immediately create a new system point manually.

Download, install and run Cleanup! from Steven Gould, then:

1. Click "Cleanup!"

(wait for the program to finish scanning your system, and selecting files to be removed.)

2. Exit the program and reboot the computer, if necessary.
