Undesired program running at startup

A program (most likely a virus) appeared in my WINDOWS folder and added itself to the Startup list. Fortunately Norton disallowed it from running. I found the program and deleted it, and now, when I log in, I get an error message that says:

Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\userint32.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file' click the Start button, and then click Search.

I assumed that the program was still in the Startup list, so it was trying to start up anyway even though the file wasn't there.

I ran msconfig and unchecked userint32.exe in the Startup tab, but got the same error message when I restarted the computer and logged in.

msconfig had the location of the file as SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
So I looked in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\... and in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\... but the file wasn't in either folder.
I searched the registry and found the file in a couple of places and deleted it. But it still showed up in msconfig and I still got the error message.

So I searched on google and found a topic on this forum that discussed a similar problem, removing items from the Startup tab. I followed one person's instructions to actually delete it from the registry from the \msconfig folder. This did remove the file from the Startup list, but I still got the error message, implying the the program was trying to run even though it's nowhere to be found in the Startup list.

Any suggestions? Is a different program calling userint32.exe so that I would have to find the other program and get rid of it as well?

Please download HijackThis http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/HijackThis.exe - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KRC%...20Analyzer.zip and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in 'y' if you agree. The 'result.txt' file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. You don't need to post the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KRC%...20Analyzer.zip in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in your next reply.

It doesn't really seem like the problem is being caused by spyware or the like. But I guess it's worth a try

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

PhysicsSquirrel Registered User Join Date: May 2005 Posts: 11 OS: Windows XP	Undesired program running at startup A program (most likely a virus) appeared in my WINDOWS folder and added itself to the Startup list. Fortunately Norton disallowed it from running. I found the program and deleted it, and now, when I log in, I get an error message that says: Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\userint32.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again. To search for a file' click the Start button, and then click Search. I assumed that the program was still in the Startup list, so it was trying to start up anyway even though the file wasn't there. I ran msconfig and unchecked userint32.exe in the Startup tab, but got the same error message when I restarted the computer and logged in. msconfig had the location of the file as SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run So I looked in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\... and in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\... but the file wasn't in either folder. I searched the registry and found the file in a couple of places and deleted it. But it still showed up in msconfig and I still got the error message. So I searched on google and found a topic on this forum that discussed a similar problem, removing items from the Startup tab. I followed one person's instructions to actually delete it from the registry from the \msconfig folder. This did remove the file from the Startup list, but I still got the error message, implying the the program was trying to run even though it's nowhere to be found in the Startup list. Any suggestions? Is a different program calling userint32.exe so that I would have to find the other program and get rid of it as well? Thanks.

Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it. 1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'. 2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log. 3. Get HijackThis Analyzer http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KRC%...20Analyzer.zip and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in 'y' if you agree. The 'result.txt' file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. You don't need to post the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless. Reboot into Normal Mode run a new HijackThis scan.
