Need help with Trojan Removal

I recently installed a new version of Norton Antivirus and now it keeps popping up and telling me it's found a TROJAN in file c:\windows\system32\rdriv.sys. Iv'e tried to delete the file in Safe Mode, but it keeps coming back. There's also a process running in my task bar called Project1 that keeps appearing everytime I boot up. Now I've got continuous pop ups and strange email accounts showing up in Outlook. I just ran Adaware and Trend Micro right before the Hijackthis log was generated. Trend Micro was unable to delete the following Trojans: WORM_SDBOT.BKW, JBOT_AGENT.ABS, WORM_RBOT.GEN and TROJ STERVIS.C.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Download ewido security suite from here… http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Update it’s database from here.. http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/
Run a scan and let it clean the PC.

Copy the following to notepad.

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files"

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click “Kill process” for each one (You must kill them one at a time). They may not be listed but we need to make sure.

Ok. I re-did the Hijackthis scan and deleted the new items you told me to delete. I also saw that some items were back from the original list you gave me to delete, so I also deleted them. However, the last item on your first list (...winmgc.exe) keeps coming back. I wasn't able to get to the techsupport forum pages without deleting that process.

It also seems that my Windows XP firewall can't be turned on. All the options are 'greyed' out. Is there still something going on here?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

You should still have CleanUp! But just incase
Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Download FxIstbar.exe and run it.

Note: Removing this adware component from the system will likely cause the program that installed it to not function as intended. The uninstaller generally identifies the programs that will not work after uninstallation.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Go to Start->Run and type in services.msc and hit OK. Then look for Windows Management Construct (winmgmc) here and double click on it. Click on the Stop button and under Startup type, choose Disabled.

Go into Hijack This->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click “Kill process” for each one (You must kill them one at a time). (they shouldn't be - but double check):

Please remember to close all other windows, including browsers then click Fix checked.

Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Delete the following Files indicated in RED and Folders indicated in BLUE if they still exist.

Download Rkfiles.zip http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
UNZIP the contents to a permanent folder on your desktop.

Download the following attachment remv3.zip http://forums.skads.org/index.php?showtopic=80
Make a folder on the root drive C:\ and unzip the files into it.

REBOOT TO SAFE MODE… These tools MUST be run in safe mode!!

Once in safe mode…

Double click rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the dos window closes.
Open the C:\log.txt it created and rename it log1.txt.

Now Open the folder were you saved remv3.zip files and click the rem.bat file and let it run. It will delete the files and remove the infection and then make a log of the files it finds. The log file will be C:\log.txt and bad1.txt

**Note** Each tool uses log.txt as it’s output file so make sure you save the entry’s from one tool before running the other as it will overwrite the file if you don’t.

Reboot back to normal mode and post the contents of both the log.txt and log1.txt in your next post along with a new hijackthis log.

Turn off System Restore Click Start > Right Click My Computer > Properties. Click the System Restore tab and Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives". Click Apply. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this then Click OK. Now reenable system restore. This will prevent any reinfection from any previous restore points.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go

This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?. You need an antivirus that is continually updated, a good firewall, a spyware blocker such as Spyware Blaster, and a real time spyware program such as Spyware Guard, to prevent spyware intrusions. IE-Spyad is another excellent program that places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list, which will help prevent attempts to infect your system. All of the above have good free versions available. However, be very wary with any security software that is advertised in popups or in other ways. They are not only usually of no use, but often have malware in them.

Well... it seems my system is real clean now. The only thing is that my XP firewall is still disabled and I can't enable it. Could it be that when I installed Norton Antivirus 2005 several weeks ago (when this all happened), I allowed it to use it's Worm Protection capability and it's now doing the firewall function instead of XP?

I am not sure of all the details with Norton 2005 but I dont think the worm protection should block this. There are other users having assorted problems with 2005 so there may be a connection.

XP's firewall is a basic one and I would not recomend using it anyway.

I would recomend Zone Alarm best of all its free.

If Norton ever becomes a problem for you, you may want to switch to AVG Free
