Can't get rid of Startpage trojan
I ran lots of anti spyware and my AVG software, thought i got rid of this pest, but when I start up my ATT worldnet, I don't get my att home page, it just dies and I have to click open either IE or Mozilla which I just loaded. Yesterday, I don't know how but AVG showed the Trogan.Startpage. 17 and 19 or something and when I rebooted, it "healed". Not really, because I still don't get my ATT start page, lots of spam and not so savory pop ups. I think it is embeded.
Help please. I ran a HJT and am including it in my thread, it follows. Hi DOm, and Welcome to TSF!
Right click on this link http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/DelO15Domains.inf and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards. Download CWShredder http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CWShredder.exe Right click a blank part of your desktop & select New->Folder. Call it SPFix. Go to http://www.derbilk.de/404.html and download SpSeHjfix. Get the one that's specified for your Operating System. So if you have Windows 98, get the one that's listed for Windows 98. Disconnect from the net and close all programs. Run SpSeHjfix and click on 'Start Disinfection'. When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process. The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder. If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage. Now run the CWShredder and hit the Fix button. Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and the log that was created by SpSeHjfix.

You can fix this entry in HJT:
O1 - Hosts: 64.91.255.87 www.dcsresearch.com It is related to diamondcs, makers of TDS 3 and other anti-malware products, and not necessary to have in your hosts file. Your log is clean. Let's flush your System Restore points, and set a new one. This is in case in the future, should the need arise to use System Restore, your system won't be re-infected by using a "dirty" Restore Point. Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double-click on the System icon. On the Performance tab click File System. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore. Click OK. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart Windows. Enable System Restore again by following the same steps as above except you should uncheck Disable System Restore. You will then need to manually create a new Restore Point. Make sure to get the latest updates for Windows and Internet Explorer at http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Yes, basically. Just a minor fix left actually.
Check and fix this one also in HijackThis: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {82038C68-BD59-4826-9498-6E58ECD16C0B} - (no file) Just to confirm that this file is ok, I want you to go to this site and upload this file to the site -> C:\WINDOWS\RunDLL.exe Hit Submit button. What are the results? If it's good, then your computer should be clean. Any problems now?

almost there, but no cigar
I have done everything, but I think I still have a virus somewhere, how I know this is when I tried to set up spyware blaster, got a message that it could not because a virus may be present. I have run another HJT after re preforming all the steps done before. Any ideas. Also, I have used firefox since I tried IE once and got a message that trojan horse startpage.19.AN was found, and "healed". Guess it wasn't.

There is no sign of malware in that HJT log. Let's use another scanning tool and see if we can uncover something:
Download ewido security suite from here… http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ Update it’s database from here.. http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ Run a scan and let it clean the PC. Save the scan log. Next, Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool. Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3) 1. Save it to a folder. 2. Reboot into Safe Mode. 3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything. 4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane. 5. In the Virus Log Information Pane...... Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file *Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files. Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here. Also, post the scan log from ewido, and a new hijackthis log when complete.

Hello domb,
We'll take care of the Viruses in your restore folder after we're done here. Do not worry, they cannot reinfect your PC unless you use the restore feature.(so don't use it yet) The Notepad file is showing what has been deleted. Unfortunately, it's not going to show us anything that may still be present. When you click on Mwav.exe a box should come up with boxes already checked for you by default. Look in the first column of the 'Scan Options' and you'll see 'Drives' in light gray. Click on that box and it will be set for 'All Drives'. then just hit the 'Scan' button. |

I must have done a boo boo before I read your post. I don't know what I did but I could not get my PC to reboot or start up with anything.
I took the CD's that came with the PC and just started from scratch "without reformating the hard drive" and will reload my apps and the great "anti" tools recommended in the site articles. I was told to do it from the start by friends, but thought otherwise and worked with all you good people. Sorry for "wasting" your time, but I will now be more diligent and when my daughters come home and use my PC, they will only use firefox. Thanks Dom B. |
