CPU is maxing out 100%
Please help. I've followed the instructions before I've posted this and I've run AdAware SE, scanned the PC with the TREND website ran HijackThis and the analyser.
My computer keeps maxing out at 100% CPU usage and this severly slows down the computer. I feel certain I have something in my PC that is doing this but I'm not proficient enough to be able to decipher what it is, your help will be very grateful Thanks here's my result.txt log ==================================================================== Log was analyzed using KRC HijackThis Analyzer - Updated on 4/1/05 Get updates at http://www.greyknight17.com/download.htm#programs ***Security Programs Detected*** C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee VirusScan\Avsynmgr.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee VirusScan\VsStat.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee VirusScan\Vshwin32.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Firewall\CPD.EXE C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Shared Components\Guardian\CMGrdian.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee VirusScan\Avconsol.exe C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Firewall\CPD.EXE O3 - Toolbar: McAfee VirusScan - {ACB1E670-3217-45C4-A021-6B829A8A27CB} - C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee VirusScan\VSCShellExtension.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [McAfee Guardian] "C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Shared Components\Guardian\CMGrdian.exe" /SU O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gcasServ] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe O23 - Service: McShield - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\McShield\Mcshield.exe ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 16:14:30, on 15/04/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\VoyagerTest\fts.exe R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,First Home Page = C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\welcome.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://esampler.tns-global.com/esamp...ml?harvest,AOL F3 - REG:win.ini: load= C:\TCWIN45\PIPELINE\remind.exe O3 - Toolbar: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll (file missing) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [%FP%Friendly fts.exe] "C:\Program Files\VoyagerTest\fts.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DSLSTATEXE] C:\Program Files\BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem\dslstat.exe icon O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DSLAGENTEXE] C:\Program Files\BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem\dslagent.exe O4 - Global Startup: Picture Package Menu.lnk = ? It might just be that you have a lot of programs running at startup. Give us your original hijackthis.log file.
Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3. Learn how to use it here. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates here. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to System Testing on the menu and choose Full System Scan. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies.

The TDS-3 scan found 4 alarms. What are they? Please post them here. They should be in a file called scandump.txt.
Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InCD] C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCD.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AOLDialer] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\AOLDial.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe O4 - Global Startup: AOL 9.0 Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\AOL 9.0\aoltray.exe O4 - Global Startup: Picture Package Menu.lnk = ? O4 - Global Startup: Picture Package VCD Maker.lnk = ? That should improve the speed at startup. Yes, because of the firewall You need to go into McAfee firewall and make sure it's not blocking all traffic. I don't like McAfee firewall. If you can, uninstall it and go with ZoneAlarm instead. There's a free version for personal use.

Thankyou very much for your help. I've uninstalled McAfee and installed ZoneAlarm and this seems to have fixed the CPU hang up. Well I've had no problems since.
I've also deleted the items you advised me too. Thanks The 4 alarms flagged by TDS where exe's from games or application installers. One was hltv.exe from half-life, one was BitTorrent-3.4.2.exe another was MinGW-2.0.0-3.exe. I can't remeber the other one off hand but it was just another installer exe. I don't know if these should be removed or not? Thanks again though J |

Hehehe, I guess we nailed it. I'm sure you will find ZoneAlarm much more friendly to use. If you have problems, feel free to ask them in the forums here or PM me.
Your log is clean. If you disabled System Restore, make sure to enable it now. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent and use the tools provided. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
