Lots of Norton Trojan Alerts

I'm getting alot of Norton trojan alerts (that are being deleted automatically), as well as a bunch of BHO warnings about changing my home page. Also there are several entries in this log file i don't recognize and make me a bit nervous.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

I will follow the steps you outlined, the only thing is I did save the Hiijack file in C/HJT when I downloaded the latest version.

When I try to run the TrendMicro scan it kicks me out every time with a message that it found and cleaned Troj_small.AFG.

I know my AV defs in Norton are up to date, but we were not able to delete 15 viruses it located.

I'm going to proceed with the other steps you highlighted.

Does Norton say where those 15 infected files are located? We need to delete them.

This is what I can find from that trojan name you gave us. If you intend to edit the registry, make sure you back it up first (File->Export Registry and save it somewhere).

It may be easier if you try running this program and see if it will catch those trojans for you:

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3. Learn how to use it here. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates here. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to System Testing on the menu and choose Full System Scan. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies.

Unfortunately my son ran the Norton scan and didn't remember/save any details.

However, i was able to proceed with the steps you outlined, but could not delete the two exe files TASKMDRU or MsimN32 until after I fixed them in Hijack this (I manually deleted them from the system 32 folder).

I'm currently re-starting in normal mode but I'm worried about those trojans. I'll post the log files you asked me for and hopefully you can make some sense of it.

I gave you bad information. He didn't find anything with norton but got a message when he turned on the system that there were 15 trojans.

Also we have a small BSOD error message in the middle of the desktop about a trojan infection (I'll post details once I'm done with the AV scan in safe mode).

The bho.dll,TASKMGRU and MSIMN32 exe files are pesky. I delete them in safe mode after fixing them in HJT but they re-appear at re-start (both safe and normal).

It's gotten worse. Now my laptop, which connected thru the router, has no internet connection. Every time I delete the bhoass.dll and other exe files they re-appear. Help me please!!!!!!!!!

You really need to get that TDS-3 scan done if you haven't done so already. Did you finish running it yet or did it give you problems? If it's done, we need the log it created in that top and bottom panel.

This should fix up the internet connection:

I'm doing that scan now. I tried the trend micro fix for the trojan but it said I was missing a file. I went into the registry and started looking for the entries to delete then manually but I thought I'd do the TDIS scan before messing with the registry.

While searching I found 2 BHO entries. Should I drlete those?

If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

For the result.txt log, make sure you deleted the older hijackthis.log file before analyzing it. It's analyzing the older log file which we saw already. After deleting it, run a new HijackThis scan. Save log and analyze it.

Go to C:\WINDOWS\ and double click on wininit.ini to open it. Delete this line:

Save the file and close it.

Run StartDreck with the same options checked like before. Click on each of the following and hit the Delete button in the program:

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

You may delete this file manually -> C:\WINDOWS\hosts

Restart and post the new HijackThis log. Also post the following:

Right click on http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.vbs and choose Save As...Save it to your Desktop. Make sure you have disabled any programs that may block/disable scripts (ex: Ad-Watch, TeaTimer, Norton, etc.). Double click on 'Silent Runners' to run it. This will take a few minutes. It will create a file called 'Startup Programs' followed by your computer name and current date. Open up that file and post all the contents here in your next post.

Download DllCompare http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/DllCompare.exe and run it. Click on the 'Locate.com' button. Wait a few seconds and then click on the 'Compare' button. Let it run, then click on 'Make a log of what was found'. Post that log here. Note: If you are having problems using DllCompare (16 bit error), copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Now try running DllCompare.

The BHO.dll, TASKMGRU.exe and MSIMN32.exe files will not go away. This is awfully frustrating, but again, I appreciate your help and patience.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete these:

MSIMN32
TASKMGRU

Next go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\Browser Helper Objects\ and delete {1A1488CB-8028-49ba-AD19-18D13CDC650F}

Then go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\ and delete {3E72C776-16EC-4425-BB50-7C544D3CA910}

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

If you have Windows XP, go to C:\Windows\Prefetch and delete everything inside that Prefetch folder.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Restart and post a new HijackThis log and Silent Runners log.

Things seem to have improved (I'm not getting the BHO Homepage change warnings and the BHOASS, MSIMN32 and TASKMGRU entries appear to be gone from the HJT log).

But I still have an annoying error message in the middle of my desktop about a fatal error caused by "Trojan-Spy.HTML.smitfraud.c".

I was finally able to complete a house call scan and it was clean.
