Isearch registry entries can not be cleaned

Hi,

I'm always being redirected to other sites with ringtones,... I scanned everything on my PC using a number of tools in orde to solve this problem but I was not able to clean everything out. I used spybot, spyware doctor, spysubstract, swshredder, spysweeper and pestpatrol.

One thing that can not be cleaned out is Isearch. Some of these tools find a number of registry entries but they are not able to clean them out. I even looked for some manual solutions on the net but again, it doesn't work. The only thing strange is that I never saw the isearch toolbar but perhaps one of these tools has already fixed that problem

I'll first give you the entries the tools find and then I 'll give you the log of hijackthis.

I hope you can help me cause I'm at the end of my wits.

Entries found by Spysubtract:

'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_DELPROT'
'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_DELPROT\0000'
'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_DELPROT\0000\Class'
'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_DELPROT\0000\ClassGUID
'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_DELPROT\0000\ConfigFlags
'HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_DELPROT\0000\DeviceDesc

Welcome to TSF.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O16 - DPF: {05D96F71-87C6-11D3-9BE4-00902742D6E0} (QuickPlace Class) - https://quickplace1.emea.gweb.eds.com/qp2.cab

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\ and delete LEGACY_DELPROT

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

Restart. Any problems now?

Still problem

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I deleted the quickplace stuff and after a rescan it didn't appear anymore. SO that's already OK

However, I tried to delete the registry keys but got an error message saying it's not possible to delete. I tried to right click on it but I don't get an option permissions. The only things I get are collapse, new, find, delete, rename and copy key name. I'm working on a Windows 2000 system and my logon has Administrator rights.

Any ideas?

OK, instead of using regedit, type in regedt32 in the run box. Use that to delete that registry key.

OK, I was able to delete the keys. Unfortunately, when I open google, I always get a new explorer window with ads (happens at other times too but always when I enter a searchkey.

The only thing I can still see now that could give a problem is the fact that - in the Hijack This log- there is an entry called winlog that uses a strange dll. When I try to delete it, it refuses and when I use the option to delete it after a reboot, the dll is deleted but is replaced by a new one. Could this be some sort of infection?

OK, give us a new HijackThis log along with this log:

Download StartDreck http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/StartDreck.zip

Unzip to its own folder and start the program:
Press 'Config'
Press 'mark all'

Uncheck the following boxes only:
System/Running Process -> List Modules
System/Drivers -> NT Services
System/Drivers -> NT Kernel- and FS-drivers
Press 'OK'

Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application)

Post the log in this thread.

My System

OK, you have the iGetNet infection there. Do this now:

Download L2MFix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts. Then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing Enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening. After a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 or any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

log

OK, I ran the tool and I have got a log. I did get an error message:

c:\winnt\system32\cmd.exe
c:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS or microsoft windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.

Since I didn't think this would be wise, I chose Ignore (twice)

I got this log:

L2MFIX find log 1.03

My System

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing Enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2MFix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Howdy,

It looks like the tools cleaned most of it out. We still have a pesky service running that you don't need. In fact, it has only shown up now, so I am hoping that this is the "kernal" of the infection.

On the HJTmain screen , click on the "Open the misc tools" button.

Then, click on "Delete an NT Service. In the box that pops up, paste in svcproc.exe. Click OK. Exit form HJT, reboot and post a new HJT log.

My System

You still have HijackThis.exe running from the temp folder. Please move that exe file and a folder called backup OUT of that temp folder now.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

The end

I tried it out this weekend and I didn't receive any unwanted windows anymore so I guess the problem is solved.

Thanks a lot!!
